In this essay, Bergman's complex relationship with love is explored, in an attempt to seek the sources for the cynical and sarcastic tone found in most of his films, a defining characteristic of the Swedish director's oeuvre.
This analysis resorts to the ideas and questions found in A Lesson in Love, Wild Strawberries, The Seventh Seal and Winter Light, as well as thoughts and experiences shared in the director's autobiagraphies The Magic Lantern and Images.
