I love my Berkey. Note: I have mind sitting outside my dining room door in my garage. My concern is I didn’t want it in my kitchen in case I overfilled it and there was a leak between the upper and lower chamber. I have wood floors in my kitchen so just being cautious. I love the taste of the water and it is much cheaper than me filling up a bunch of water jugs. I keep it in my garage on a stand. I bought a secondhand stand and it came with a ceramic water jug which I placed on the ground under where The Berkey water Spigot drains. I put a small plate on top of the ceramic water jug so that I can set my pitcher or other containers to fill up underneath where the spigot drains. I refill it with a pitcher from my kitchen. it takes about 3 or 4 refills to fill it. I refill it every two days or so. I have the 3.25 gallon size. I check the water level by simply looking in the upper and lower chamber to see how much water I have to add.

I'm considering getting one because it's better prepping-wise than my Pur countertop unit. The Pur takes cartridges which might become unobtainable. I use 1 gallon of potable water a day, so a set of Berkey filters would last me a long time. When the city water stops, I can get water around here but it won't be the prettiest water. But at least I'll be able to *get* water.

I prefer my water at room temperature but if I wanted it to be cold, I would just keep a pitcher filled in the fridge. Or put ice in it. I don't fill ice cube trays at this time. We don't use very much ice at all. But if I used lots of ice, had really bad water, and had no way to filter what was going to the freezer then I probably would.

I bought a Berkey, spending $500 in total for all filters and container. It leaks which is extremely frustrating. I reached out to Berkey with no resolution. They told me to take my stainless steel spigot apart to check the gaskets. I tried to twist it apart with no luck. I want to love the thing but having water all over my counter and the waste is quite frankly unacceptable for something so expensive. If you have any tips on how to fix I’d be grateful. Berkey has not even offered to replace the spigot...which I’d think if they are as customer focused as they report, would have been done immediately. I just want filtered water that is not all over my counter:(. HElP

THE METAL SPIGOT: I just purchased the BIG Berkey and added the metal spigot. The spigot LEAKS where it comes through the Berkey wall and is difficult to use to draw water without twisting the entire spigot too. The instructions say to finger tighten, but could never tighten it enough, even gently using a wrench. Further research produced a similar experience by someone who used plumber's tape and stopped the leak. The leak is coming from the wall connection and not the spigot itself. The Berkey container's metal is very thin and the spigot is quite heavy by comparison, so there is an awkward fit even though the washers look quite competent. I believe some sort of plumber's tape would fix the problem, but have not tried that myself. I am keeping the metal spigot as a back-up spigot to use with some type of potable-water plumber's tape in case I break the plastic one and need to order another plastic spigot, which I would do because I do like the plastic spigot best... I have not bothered to complain to Berkey about this. The metal spigot had some water in it when I unpacked it and turned the handle, so maybe it had been returned by another customer and then sent to me, but the leak does appear to be the fit at the Berkey wall and not the spigot itself.

My Berkey lives on a 30 inch lab stool I purchased from a school supply house specifically for this purpose! It’s black and stainless just like the Berkey and made of materials designed to live in a high school or college chemistry lab so even spilling water on it occasionally isn’t going to hurt it any!

Sat30s Name well, the lid doesn't fit on the bottom chamber, I just tried it to see. The other problem would be, I would be concerned about damaging the filters since they stick down from the holes in the top chamber plus of you used the fluoride filters they'd be sticking out too. I think trying to find a dedicated space for it would be a much better idea. Even if you got a small stool or something so it wouldn't be on an actual counter like another commenter said.

A great update to the design would be a 1/2" sleeve attached to the top chamber that overlapped the bottom chamber when assembled. If you use a Berkey with contaminated water outside, there is a good chance you may spill a little when filling the top chamber. As this runs down the outside of the unit the unfiltered water collects in the upward facing joint between the top and bottom creating the distinct possibility that whatever bad stuff is in the unfiltered water could seep in and contaminate your "clean" water. The sleeve would direct any spills over the joint eliminating this problem. Currently, I recommend covering the joint with painter's tape in the field. It blocks the ingress of unfiltered water and easily peels off without leaving any residue.

Just heads up: I re-ordered my black filters for my Berkey and the water STINKS like petroleum. I don't know why, and it certainly did NOT smell that way with my old filters. I've had horrible service with this company, they don't want to hear my complaints and insist on me paying for new filters. The water out of tap in the upper chamber actually smells better by a mile (though a bit chlorinated). What is wrong with this company? and why are their products going downhill? I found alarmingly high levels of aluminum in our water along with chlorine and sulfates. The test they conducted was not in an EPA approved lab and we have to ask ourselves where did they get their tap water they’re testing from? Yes you can but just keep in mind that the dirtier the water, the shower it will filter, etc. It's recommended that if you're using water from a source that has visible contaminants that you filter it somehow first to get as much sediment out as possible. Through a t shirt for example.

We tried cutting out fluoride and my daughter ended up with a mouthful of cavities because we were using a very popular natural toothpaste that didn't contain fluoride so my question is how do you keep your teeth healthy if you don't use fluoride toothpaste?
@thislovelylittlefarmhouse
3 жыл бұрын
Fortunately we haven't had problems with our daughter's teeth. I use Young Living's Thieves toothpaste and she uses their kids toothpaste. I'm not sure which one you were using but I've seen a lot of recommendations for Risewell also. I personally love the Young Living ones. They leave my teeth feeling like I just left the dentist. I do think a lot with your teeth has to do with genetics. That being said, full disclosure: I do now have cavities from during & after the pregnancy of our second. I've heard it's very common to get cavities during pregnancy. I know mine is due to my horrible oral hygiene during pregnancy because brushing made me gag so badly and I've eaten tons of lactation cookies during the night for the past 7 months while still not getting my brushing habits up to par. I've really gotten back on track with brushing and I'm looking into remineralization so we'll see. Sorry for the letter but I just wanted to be completely honest in regards to your question!

Get a toothpaste that's SLS free and contains calcium hydroxyapatite (a phophate rich mineral). BOKA is one brand and Risewell is another. My teeth have never been stronger. ALSO, she may have LOTS of fluoride in her water since its well water. Municipal water adds fluoride to a certain concentration, however, well-water can be several hundred times higher in naturally occurring fluoride, still just as bad as the municipal addition of fluoride, or even worse!

All that means is that there are still lots of minerals in the water.....that's not bad. You'd have to have the water tested by a test lab to find out what's really in there. The little testers that check for ppm & TDS just tells you if there are minerals in the water.

THIS posted by a commenter just stopped me from buying one - Just heads up: I re-ordered my black filters for my Berkey and the water STINKS like petroleum. Their service dept is NOT what you want to deal with, with a problem. I recommend going elsewhere when looking for a home water filter.

As far as the large size being a "con": you wouldn't want to put it under the cabinets anyway because you need access to the spout to get your clean water. Sliding it forward and back on the counter, especially when full, would be a pain in the butt. 🤷♂️

What are the benefits of fluoride filters? And to clarify, the water that is put in must be used up/changed every 1-3 days? Also, is it mandatory to always have water in it? What would be the case if I am not around for some time and it won't be using it?

I am not one to put together things that have alot of fussy steps and parts but the utube tutorials helped alot. The problems you've pointed out aren't anything that is a problem for me. There was some leaking from over filling and around the steel spigot as I didn't tighten it enough which I feel happens with any new products. I do find it challenging to handle it while it's being tested, cleaned or put together as the top chamber is supposed to remain upright. Thanks for the info of the pluses and advice. I have a well and actually never tested it so I'll do that. A good overview.

My biggest question that I can’t find the answer to, how long does it take the water to filter through. Is it a steady stream? Does it drip? Quick drip?
@thislovelylittlefarmhouse
3 жыл бұрын
They do take a little while to filter and I think just how long depends on different factors like how much the filters are having to remove, hardness of water, etc. The only two that I have to compare are between my filter and my mom's filter. Mine is a slow but fairly steady stream/trickle but my mama's is only a drip. Hers takes much longer to filter the same amount than mine but she's on city water and I'm on well water. Our water softness is very different as well. So probably the reason you don't hear people say as much is because it really varies.
@StaCatRoo
3 жыл бұрын
@@thislovelylittlefarmhouse got it! I just got mine. It seemed to be rather slow. I have city water. Maybe that is why. I also have the fluoride filters attached. Which I’m sure slows it down even more. Now that’s I’ve been using it for a week or so, it does seem to flow through a little quicker.
