DAWless Setup: Behringer 2600 Blue Marvin, Korg MS-20 (mini), Behringer Model-D, Korg ModWave, KeyStep Pro (MIDI). Vermona Melodicer eurorack module is sending notes and gate to the MS-20. Midas DM16 (Mixer), Tascam DR-40 (recording).
Effect chains: Strymon TimeLine into TC Electronics Hall of Fame into Strymon Mobius (2600 Blue Marvin), Meris Polymoon is on mixer AUX1, TC Electronics Hall of Fame is on mixer AUX2. The Model-D and MS-20 are being sent to both AUX1 and AUX2. The Soma Cosmos is being use to loop the ModWave sounds.
Modulation: I'm using the 0chd eurorack module for LFO modulation to the ADSR filter and ring modulator on the 2600.
To be completely honest, I don't know what to call this one. It definitely doesn't sound like some of my favorite classic Berlin School tracks, but I can't argue that Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, and even Aphex Twins have some Berlin School aspects to some tracks that don't always fall within what the most iconic Berlin School music sounds like. I'll admit though... I'm no expert. I'm still learning and having to learn mostly on my own. I won't beat myself up too much over this, if its a mistake in genre.
In general, I like how this turned out with the exception of a few things. Some mistakes stand out and of course one can be their own worst critic. For a one take track that I came up with randomly, I'm not ashamed of it. I just wish I wasn't so "in the moment" sometimes and completely lose track of time. It really didn't need to be twelve minutes long. Another thing that stands out is a moment when I switched oscillator one from 16' to 8' on the MS-20 towards the very end and it squelched unpleasantly when the gate opened. I need to be certain I have the filter closed before I make a switch unless I'm certain of the sequence. In this case the Vermona Melodicer is using a stochastic rhythm and I really couldn't anticipate when it would trigger. I wanted the variation in pitch, but not at the cost of the harsh sound, especially as I was trying to break things down and the mix was somewhat sparse.
I also "kind of" liked the Model-D bass line, but it got a bit stale over time. Again, there was no reason for this to be twelve minutes long. I think it wouldn't have been as boring to me if it had only been six or eight minutes. There was enough going on otherwise to drone it out.
I really liked have three different sounds from the ModWave looped within the Soma Cosmos. It worked better when I was playing around with it earlier in the day, but it still turned out pretty nice. It would have been better if I could have spaced out the cello sounds more, but it's really hard for me to get the spacing right at this point. I still need to practice a lot more with it. I've stopped using the "super reverb" setting (the third set of options on the dial) for now. It tends to totally blend everything you add to the loop together. Like sonic watercolor painting. Just runs into everything else. The third selector on the first set of options is working better for me right now. I want to play around with the blur knob next and see how it affects things over short and long periods. I was frustrated overall with the Cosmos for a couple of months. Now I'm finally starting to get some interesting things out of it that fit my music. I hope I can continue to gel with it.
I'm still listening back and watching myself on the Berlin School Ambient9 video. I don't feel I've analyzed it enough and learned everything I can from it. If feels good to post something new while I'm still doing so. Maybe it's a sign I'm "in the zone" right now. I need to keep moving forward and maintain my enthusiasm. It's great to have passion about your work. I think I learn the most when I'm driven to do more. I want to try making some generative ambient stuff shortly, but I really need more time with the new eurorack modules I have first. More on that later.
