Lovely performance. Caught the spirit of Berlioz, which is oh so French and full of joy.

Even with the odd sound and a couple of editing glitches, this is a remarkable performance. There is so much to praise here! Start with the luscious sound of the viola and how the soloists uses it to characterize Harold. Next is the masterly conducting. For instance, the end of the first movement is not rushed off its feet; this gives the instrumental lines time to find their shape. It is true that the trumpets are too loud, but against this, consider that whenever the woodwinds double or accompany the viola, the change in tone color is audible, which is seldom true in commercial recordings with a spotlight on the soloist. The orchestra is accomplished and plays this (undoubtedly difficult) score very well. For me this performance ranks with almost any recording I have heard (and I have heard many).

I love this piece. And beautifully played. And to hear the magical sound of the viola over top of everything. It's so lush. I wish he had given more to the viola in the middle. The fourth movement runs on for far far too long. But I love all the Beethovenish stuff. And a wonderful wrap-up

I'm genuinely curious: what do you find "bizarre" about the performance? (The only thing I find bizarre is having the viola soloist play along with the final tutti of the last movement.)

Thanks for posting this. Negatives first: The camera work is unimaginative and the sound far too dry and bright, no warmth in the orchestra at all. The Positives: I LOVE the performance, the conductor brings out all the rhythmic details of Berlioz' miraculous score and though I'm no viola player myself the playing sounds confident with great feeling and, despite inferior audio, obviously a nice rich tone. I've heard some famous soloists/orchestras in this piece but this performance doesn't yield anything to them.

Thanks for this: good to have different versions. It looks as if recorded on superior amateur equipment, on a fixed tripod. Criticism of "camera work" is pointless, because there isn't any. We are lucky to have the odd tightening of the single shot. Sound, a little too bright, and trumpet way too dominant, almost comically so at times. But a spirited performance and worth uploading for our pleasure -- thank you! Good to hear the Transylvanian Philharmonic getting their teeth into this full blooded performance. Sorry, couldn't resist it...(How many times have they heard that one?)

Yes - wonderful recording and cinematography - I am pretty sure the viola is made by Hiroshi Izuka of Narberth near Philadelphia USA or possibly a copy of one.

The most famous violist of Berlioz' time, to whom the piece was dedicated, refused to play it, because the viola was not featured sufficiently. Some of today's listeners make the same complaint. If your standard is not, "what gives the audience pleasure?" you are missing the point. I love the recording and I have always loved Berlioz.

I just watched several versions of Harold in Italy, and this is the best. There's an abundance of great violinists now and music. The viola needs more great music. Wonder how Bruch, Mendelsohn, and Tchaikovsky would sound on a viola?

Superb interpretation rom both the orchestra and the soloist. How underrated! I like the clarity of the viola. I guess it is modern. Who made it?

See above: it was made by Hiroshi Izuka. A very distinctive model. (The shape of the shoulders is, I think, inspired by some early German violas da gamba. It's intended to make playing in higher positions easier than on a conventionally shaped viola, where reaching around the edge of the instrument is often a struggle, unlike on the smaller violin.)

Where do you go from here? Wow that's some question. The so-called Classical field of music is absolutely vast so you will need a lifetime to explore all of it! If you like this work try Berlioz' "Symphonie Fantastique" a lot more dramatic admittedly but full of his unique talent for amazing orchestration. I started my "journey" with Tchaikovsky, a favorite of most people, then moved on from there (not that I'm suggesting he is only for beginners, far from it, his 6th symphony is one of the finest ever written) Good Luck.

Why is the Orchestra playing Fortissimo at 7;30 seconds in? They're drowning out the soloist. Berlioz made a lot of composing mistakes in this. I like the guy's Viola, a deep rich tone. I wonder who made it for him? Great Instrument, but too bad he's being drowned out by his Orchestra.......A lot!
@TheVaughan5

"Berlioz made a lot of composing mistakes in this" Really? Do you feel qualified to criticize perhaps the greatest orchestrator in history? Of course you're entitled to your opinion but opinions are not necessarily facts. The recording quality here is very inferior so a question of balance is possibly more from an engineering perspective.

Who did Berlioz write this for? The soloist or the Orchestra. The last ten minutes is almost ALL orchestra. Mozart's symphony concertante is looking better all the time.

Actually he intended to write it for Paganini and his new stradivarius, so neither! lol The viola part had rests and was not the star of the show so Paganini was not about it. Then later, once the piece was performed Paganini gave Berlioz 20,000 franks as a gift for writing the best work Paganini had ever heard! Very odd backstory, just like you would expect from The Berlioz.

"Symphony with solo viola" -- does exactly what it says on the tin. There are plenty of viola concertos if that's what you're looking for -- but you need to look elsewhere. Actually, the solo viola shouldn't even play in the final tutti of the last movement, as is done here. It rather spoils the "program" (the extra-musical narrative) of the symphony to do that in an attempt, one supposes, to make it more like a conventional concerto.

Got to love the Viola. Not much work for it, A few selections here and there. The composer must have been young when he wrote this. A lot of times the Orchestra doubles the Viola and drowns out the soloist. Mozart, Beethoven and others never made that mistake. Either we listen to the soloist or the orchestra...But not both at the same time! The cinematographer should be shot for this recording. The Violist should have visited Pinchas Zukerman and learn how to hold the Viola properly. Other than that. Exceptional playing.

'The composer' you're referring to is Hector Berlioz; who is one of the most renowned composers for the innovative approach to orchestration. People still study the text he has written on orchestration today. He wrote this piece after his most revered 'Symphonie Fantastique', and obviously knew exactly what he was doing. He did not make a 'young mistake', as you put it, with the textures of the orchestra. The fact that the sound is blended so well between the soloist and the orchestra is an incredible compositional feat, especially for the viola, with it's multitude of natural projection problems. And given the sound that the soloist is producing, he's holding his instrument just fine.
@RolandHutchinson

The orchestra is supposed to drown out the viola in places!!! That's rather the point. (Though the balance in the recorded sound here, especially with the cornets/trumpets, is sometimes problematic, to be sure.)

Unbelievable, almost like a small kid made a video and audio production. Full of childish ideas and effects. It speaks of the conductor and the orchestra too, they should not have allowed this! I can only suspect that some major disasters occurred at the very beginning, and, especially, at 24.17, with a cut of one minute+ of music. Disappointing. I have never seen or heard such a thing. Romania is a very important music country..
