The start of Bernard's 'world tour'! Following nearly a week of in-stores, he played his first proper show and wow, what a treat it was. The only thing was, I'd spent the day interviewing and had to be up early again the next day for more interviews so was absolutely knackered and had to get home west so I left a bit early. I'm sorry!
This was a joyful show. He played a lot of his new album, Good Grief, and he said this was the first live outing of this song. Nice! He also played some old solo songs, some McAlmont + Butler songs and some he wrote with Jessie Buckley. It was a fabulous mix showing the depth and breadth of all he has written over the decades. I also enjoyed how his son Charlie was his guitar tech and kept switching out guitars every few songs.
It was an absolutely gorgeous church on the Dalston/Stoke Newington border with a lovely garden around it that made it feel almost rural. It was beautiful but the pews were nearly backless and so painful! Still, it was worth it.
