What is the difference between oberland pass and swiss.rail pass?
@holidaystoswitzerland
3 ай бұрын
The Berner Oberland Pass covers only the Bernese Oberland plus a few additional routes (Lucerne to Jungfrau Region; Bern to Jungfrau Region; Domodossola to Jungfrau Region; etc.). It also fully covers around 25 mountain excursions. The Swiss Travel Pass covers public transport across all of Switzerland, and three mountain excursions. Most other mountain excursions offer a 50% discount for Swiss Travel Pass holders. We cover the differences between the passes in more detail on our website in this article: holidaystoswitzerland.com/swissrailpasses/

Can the pass be added to the SBB app and used digitally instead of trying to keep up with a paper pass when traveling
@holidaystoswitzerland

No it can't. You can instead save a photo of the pass (or a PDF of the pass) to your phone and show that to the ticket inspector when requested. Personally, I also carry a paper copy just in case my phone goes flat unexpectedly.

Hi! If I have a Berner Oberland Pass, how can I choose my seat after boarding? Can I sit anywhere? But if this place is already booked?
@holidaystoswitzerland
Ай бұрын
You can sit anywhere in the correct class - ie. any seat in a 2nd class carriage if you have a 2nd class pass. On most trains in Switzerland it is not necessary to reserve a seat and most travellers don't reserve seats. If you do wish to reserve a seat you can do so (in most cases) on the SBB Mobile app, SBB.ch website or at any station. Seats that have been reserved will have a sticker or notice on the head rest advising that the seat is reserved. Have a great trip!

So glad the Q&A was useful. It costs slightly less to reach Jungfraujoch Top of Europe with the Jungfrau Travel Pass (CHF 63 in May compared to CHF 99 with the Berner Oberland Pass). With the Berner Oberland Pass, the Schilthorn excursion is cheaper and the pass covers a much wider area. Have a great trip.

Hi. Just have a question, we are planning to go to Switzerland in October. We are going to buy the Swiss Travel pass for 15 days. If we have the Swiss travel pass, is it good to buy the Berber Oberland pass too? We are going to be in the region for 3-4 days. Do we save money if we have both passes? If so, how much will it cost to buy the Berner Oberland pass if we have the Swiss travel pass?(do we get a discount ?)
@holidaystoswitzerland

Hi Shirley, the Berner Oberland Pass includes around 25 mountain excursions for free (compared to 50% discount on most excursions with the Swiss Travel Pass). Depending on which excursions you plan to do, it may be advantageous to purchase both passes. Keep in mind that some mountain railways and cable cars close in October for their regular maintenance so check the closure dates before also purchasing the BO Pass. You can check closure dates here: holidaystoswitzerland.com/cable-car-and-funicular-closures-winter/ If you will have a valid Swiss Travel Pass for the dates you will be using a BO Pass, you can buy the BO Pass at a reduced rate. We will be staying for 4 days in Grindelwald were we plan on visiting Jungfraujoch and Schilthorn (Piz Gloria). After that, we move on to Brig to visit the Matterhorn. Which would be the best pass for us - Berner Oberland Pass? Swiss Half Fare Card? Jungfrau Travel Pass?

Hi Linda, the advantage of buying the Half Fare Card in your case is that you'll be able to use it right across Switzerland and take advantage of discounted tickets for Jungfraujoch, Schilthorn and the Matterhorn (amongst others). Without adding up the price of each individual trip you plan to take, it's difficult to give you a definite answer as to which pass will be the most beneficial for you. Zermatt is not included in the BO Pass however part of the journey is, depending on which route you take. You can travel from Brig via Kandersteg to Spiez and/or Interlaken Ost and this is covered by the BO Pass. This is not the fastest route, however - it takes about 2h:45 from Zermatt to Spiez. If you take a more direct service (via Visp), this takes around 1h:45 but is not covered by the BO Pass. Many people buy the Half Fare Card as well as that allows them to buy the BO Pass at a reduced price plus they can then buy any tickets that aren't covered by the BO Pass for half price.

You spoke of this travel a bit in the video and I didn't find the answer in the Q&A section in the BO website: Could you tell me the process, if you are traveling from the Zurich Airport to Interlaken, do you purchase a ticket from Zurich to Lucerne, because this section is not covered by the BO Pass, then get off the train at Lucerne and get back on a train to continue on to Interlaken? You just get on.....without a ticket? Just the Pass?? It would be good to purchase a seat? The SBB app does not recognize the BO pass and charges for the entire trip if you enter Zurich to Interlaken. So, this is the only process I can think of and would like some confirmation......Thank you so much for explaining this to me.
@holidaystoswitzerland
7 ай бұрын
Hi Kathleen, yes you are exactly right. You purchase a ticket from Zurich Airport to Lucerne (it will be shown as Zurich Flughafen to Luzern on the SBB website). Then, you just hop on the Luzern-Interlaken Express in Lucerne with your Berner Oberland Pass, you don't need an additional ticket as the pass covers your fare. When the ticket inspector comes around you just need to show them your BO Pass. If you would like to reserve a seat on the Luzern-Interlaken Express, you can do this on the Zentralbahn website shop.luzern.com/de/stories/luzern-interlaken-express I recommend reserving a seat on the right hand side of the train (as you depart Lucerne) for the best views, although the scenery is fantastic whichever side of the train you are on. Enjoy your trip.

The BO Pass covers all public transport (including trains) that operate in the Berner Oberland. There are no high speed trains within Switzerland but the premium panoramic trains that operate within the region (GoldenPass Line and Luzern-Interlaken Express) are included with the BO Pass. In some cases you may benefit from also having a Half Fare Card - if you have a Half Fare Card that is valid at the same time as your BO Pass, you can buy the BO Pass for a reduced rate. If the reduced rate is more than CHF 120 (the cost of the HF Card), then it is definitely advantageous to have both. Hope that helps :)

This does help a lot, but I'm still not clear why I would need another pass (the Half Fare Card), in the same region. I'm so sorry to be so confused. I feel like I'm missing something obvious.
@holidaystoswitzerland
Жыл бұрын
You don't need the Half Fare Card in the Berner Oberland Region if you already have (or will have) the Berner Oberland Pass. You would only benefit from the discounts offered by the Half Fare Card is other regions. Note - if you plan to purchase a BO Pass for 6 days' or more, then the reduced price BO Pass warrants also purchasing a Half Fare Card. ie. 6 day 2nd class BO Pass at regular price is CHF 340 / 6 day 2nd class BO Pass at reduced price is CHF 220. The benefit of also having a HF Card in this instance is that you could purchase your ticket from Basel to Bern (and any other tickets for travel outside the Berner Oberland) at a 50% discount.
