I always loved Bernie. What a class act. At the end of one season he bought his lineman each a case of Dom Perignon. After the Byner fumble against Denver Kosar walked over to Byner (who was sitting alone) and put his arm around Byner. As if to say, this is not all on you. The guy played on a broken ankle. Tough. He had a sense of humor. He joked that his 40 yard dash could be recorded on a sun dial. This guy had almost no agility but found clever ways to win and always had amazing accuracy.

The biggest mistake Bill Bellicheck ever made was dumping Bernie way too early. He shouldn't have just been a high level backup, who maybe can start for an elite guy like Marino and Aikman when they got hurt. He was still playing well, there was no drop off as he implied the year he cut him, Bill missed that. He was still able to have multiple good years left with Cleveland and he had a wonderful career with winning to go with it, that most Brown's fans have missed ever since him and those teams of course 😭.

Yeah, Belichick at that time in his career did not want a quarterback changing plays and calling audibles. His last play for the Browns was him disregarding the play called on the sidelines and throwing a bomb for a touchdown. Belichick was so pissed he threw his headphones on the ground. Bernie was released that week. Too bad. The Browns were 5-1 and winning the division. They finished 7-9 for the year. Bernie got his Super Bowl ring that year with Dallas. That was a huge strength of Mary Schottenheimer, he let Bernie do his thing, and they made the playoffs in each of Bernie's first five years.

In my opinion, I blame the coaching more than I blame the talent around him... Marty proved himself to be a winning coach, but Bernie often butted heads with him in key situations. They had Webster Slaughter, Reggie Langhorne, Brian Brennan, Ozzie Newsome, and others on offense (including a solid O-line of Risien, Fike, Baab, Williams, and Farren). I think they definitely lost against Miami in '85 because of coaching, and they probably lost because of coaching on the drive against Denver in '86. Marty was a great coach and should not have been let go as soon as he was, but it does seem like he was a little too conservative with leads in the second half
