You didn’t know that Roman gladiators were like Sumo Wrestlers? They looked nothing like buff Spartacus Series or Movie. @@PatTheRiot the reason they changed from trench knives was versatility and they often broke the blades due to their thin stature, also there were less options for grips on the knife with the brass knuckles, as someone who has used both types i actually prefer the minimalist combat style as it accompanies my reverse grip much better but at the end of the day its 100% preference.

The clip point profile has existed before the bowie was even a vague dream. That doesn`t change its effectiveness as a butcher/hunting and/or fighting knife, tho.
@quintoblanco8746
4 жыл бұрын
It’s complicated. Bowie carried what was called a butcher knife, which simply meant any large knife that could be used to butcher an animal. Such knifes could be used for self-defense and were sometimes specifically carried for that purpose., but they were tool knives. After Bowie got famous for defending himself with a knife against people with guns, the Bowie knife was created. The first Bowie was a version of the butcher knife that looked like a large Spanish hunting knife. The Bowie knife with a double edged clip point derives from that first Bowie knife. In WWII most soldiers disliked knives that were designed specifically for combat. They would sometimes trade them for something more useful. The Ka-Bar was a big success because soldiers felt it was useful tool. So although Bowie knifes were marketed as fighting knives, they were always very similar to tool knives.

I was told by my great grandfather who was in WWII that the fullers on a combat knife were put there to allow blood to flow. Knives that did not have a fuller got stuck in the human heart and made it harder to pull back out. Blades with a fuller would slide right back out. Fullers are there to make it easier to pull out of a body faster. They also add strength to the spine of the blade when forged in.
@MB-jg4tr
4 жыл бұрын
Most people have been misinformed that a fuller is a blood groove. The fuller is a design feature that adds torsion and lateral strength to a blade. Bayonet's and dagger's often have true blood grooves as they reduce suction from soft flesh on the pull out.

They were there then and now, and how they got there well, does it really matter? Just sayin'. Be safe and have fun, sincerely, Randy. 🙏😇👊

I spent 30 years in the U.S. Army Infantry. The only time I saw Soldiers using a knife was to open an MRE. Every M4/M16 in the arms room is assigned a bayonet. Do we ever use them? Uh, no. They aren’t considered a “sensitive” item, but rather an “accountable” item. They have YEARS and YEARS of rust on them because they sit in a tough box, and the only time they are seen is either during change of command inventories, or when some command sergeant major gets a hard on and wants them used during a change of command ceremony. And even then, the bayonets are kept sheathed because that one knucklehead who locks his knees in formation and passes out from standing at attention for 5-minutes.

I have a question about sheaths like the one on the USMC Ka-Bar. The retention snap is located at the top of the handle rather than close to where the blade goes into the sheath. Why is it so high? My first sheath knife was an old Walden hunting knife that had the retention snap just above the hilt. It did a MUCH better job holding the knife in place and kept it from rattling better. Whenever I see a knife with the retention strap out near the buttcap I can't help but wonder why.

Rodger P I think it is because when you place the retention strap close to where you put the knife into the sheath, you make it much more likely that you will accidentally slice off the strap when re-sheathing the blade.

John's point is correct, and by placing it higher it also keeps the sheath from "bending" and having the handle stick out at an angle. This way they knife is less likely to get caught on something as you pass by.

@@knifecenter Thank you. I have altered every sheath I've ever had. I find I like it better lower, but I've never understood. My thanks.

kinda sad you didn't mention anything about 154cm steel or anything about other knives that would be seen as utilitarian but also as a self-defense tool. I'm currently eyeballn the 154cm tops bob knife because of its excellent edge retention, its ease of sharpening, and its much more rust-resistant capabilities over the 420hc steel which is considered as one of the worlds worst alloyed steels that loses its edge much faster, but still is a really durable steel.

Like the new Gerber designs. I had a Gerber mk 2, I was never impressed with the blade tip, mine hit the floor once and it took the tip off and the floor surface was linoleum. In the Air Force I carried a standard kA Bar and I guess my friend was rich because he had a Randall. In my field as a cop and what I did knives were not allowed for carry but we did it anyway. I'm going to build a Randell type blade and fit it with deer horn. I'm not a combat knife fighter. I collect knives. Have lots of Spanish knives, muelas and Aiator .

You keep saying that the Kabar is probably the most famous combat knife in the world (probably is the most famous modern combat knife in the USA, but not in the world). The other modern knife that would compete for that title is the Fairbairn-Sykes knife, which of course influenced the early Gerber fighting knives as well as a number of other fighting knives. European combat knives do not generally follow the Bowie style clip point, instead having drop points.

I really don't know much of anything about knife design and so most of the terms you use to describe these beautiful knives goes right over my head, I generally know the pointy end from the handle, so your vids are enormously instructive to me, I did pick up a knife several years ago that I would say falls into this video's description, the only name I can find anywhere on this knife is Cook, about a 5 1/2" blade, is this a name/manufacturer with which you are familiar?

The only thing I will say is most blades don't have nearly big enough guards. Had a blade with the same grip design as the becker, it was wet and muddy, and hand still slipped over the guard onto the blade. Opened me good. Seems a lot of companies overlook that.

Bushcrafter's curse. They can't feather stick with guards, it seems. I want a big guard too!

How about adding Matt Larsen’s LHR for next time? Although I’m not sure if it’s still being sold.
