As someone with zero police experience I’d think that swat would be safer than regular patrol since youre always aware of the dangers of what you’re about to do and always with a full team of equally training and equiped officers whereas in patrol you are a lot more likely to be alone with less armour and armaments and never have any idea of what to expect at any given situation
@justforever96
2 жыл бұрын
But you are still automatically responding to the most dangerous calls, while some officers rarely or never have to pull their gun out. In reality, most SWAT work it in addition to being regular cops, so you are actually adding it to your danger total, not working it instead.

It’s interesting to hear different depts schedules and plus/minuses if each division. In my department (around 670 sworn officers in a city of 300,000) You can’t beat the schedule of Patrol. We work 4 ten hour shifts and get three days off in a row. It’s not based on seniority it’s based on your squad (A-D) and the days off rotate every three months. Right now I have Saturday-Monday off until April-June then I’ll have Monday-Wednesday off. Then in July-September I have Friday-Sunday off. Most everything is relatively the same that you said except our traffic division. They do monday-Thursday and have to rotate the overtime for events like concerts, sporting events etc

Let me ask this and I mean no disrespect or anything like that. I'm just curious to hear the answer. Let's say I stop you for Speeding at 13 over the limit and you ask me for a warning instead of a citation. My response is, I just stopped another car about 10 minutes ago for the same violation with the same excuse of "I wasn't paying attention, I didn't mean to speed....I just left Church and my mind was elsewhere" but I issued a Citation. Let's say I'll give you a warning, but you have to speak with the other driver face to face and explain why you deserve a warning and they didn't for doing the exact same thing. What would you say to him or her?

They don’t know what the outcome will be. They are there to attempt to negotiate that outcome. It’s kinda a 50/50 chance of what they’ll do. Give up or take the other route (which can be suicide, running, etc.) but SWAT also does raids and sometimes can help serve warrants if necessary.

It must be a really good feeling to know that when you are your team are in a neighborhood all the trouble makers stay in doors. What happens with the K-9 dogs when their human partner leaves that department? Or the dog retires. Do many officers keep the dogs, is there a doggy retirement home? Do dogs transfer well to other human partners? CID fascinated me as a teen an younger man. Still does now. The idea that you have to figure out a crime, and the truth of events. It's part of why Columbo is my favorite TV cop. However the reality of a detective being inundated with cases, and the horror that can come with them seems crushing. I just don't have a mind that can handle multiple things like that.

Police work is pretty much the same wherever you go. All of your points were very familiar to me even though I've been retired ten years after doing 30. Grass is always greener elsewhere and I found you exchange one set of problems for a different set as you transfer. Never got to SWAT, always got beat by seniority. Loved traffic but had a high standard for cites, no chickensheise tickets. My favorite spot was fraud section, that was great! Brass left your squad alone because they didn't understand fraud. But fraud was easy once you understand the laws and money systems. So it was like being on vacation for after years of patrol and traffic. :)
