There is an audio compression technique that I like to use that does not even require a compressor to pull off.
In most DAWs you have the ability to adjust the actual volume of the waveform before the volume fader on the same track.
Clip Gain Pro Tools
In my DAW, Protools, it's called "Clip Gain".
Adjusting the level of the clip gain up or down affects the PRE-Fader volume.
This allows you to manually turn up or down any part of the track.
This is essentially what a compressor does for you, and is the whole reason compressors were invented, but sometimes you have a very dynamic track that may need some more love.
For example...
Vocals are one of the most dynamic instruments you will ever deal with.
In the verse a vocalist can be singing softly, but when the chorus kicks in the vocalist can be screaming at the top of their lungs.
There is a big difference in volume and dynamics between the two sections.
Just adding a compressor with fixed settings may not deliver the desired result you are after.
You can add multiple compressors (serial compression) to help deal with this in stages. This is a great audio compressor technique and I use this method in every mix.
You can also go further which takes a little more work and manually do this turning up and turning down on a phrase by phrase or section by section basis.
This helps your compressors not have to work so hard and results in a more natural sounding track.
My goal when mixing is to make things sound as natural and as organic as possible.
I've shot a video that shows what I'm talking about in action below.
