Couple of years riding and my advice to people is to not spend too much time trying to pick the "perfect" motorcycle gear. Buy what's in your budget and upgrade over time. As you ride, you'll get a better idea of what type of products you'll want to buy. I highly recommend going to a physical dealer/revzilla/cycle gear to try on gear, even if they don't have the exact item you want in stock. You'll see how different brands fit and it'll help you pick the right size the first time and avoid returns for online orders.

If you’re a soon to be new rider, and will only be riding in inner-city traffic on a lower powered bike (probably 200cc max) would you need to buy such big riding boots as one sees some bikers wear? I was thinking of getting those biker shoes that look like normal shoes/nailed boots instead of proper MotoGP looking stuff.
@chorseundgrd
7 ай бұрын
@@friktionrc Riding "shoes" or boots would probably be fine. They're already much better than a pair of Nikes or Converse. I have a pair of Dainrse ones that I wear for rides with friends or to the office and I love them. Very comfortable off the bike and stylish. I have MotoGP style boots for trips out to the twisties where I'm spending less time off the bike and riding more aggressively. I recommend Rev'it for riding shoes and TCX for riding boots. Unfortunately the Dainese shoes I have are discontinued.

much better than buying riding pants is chaps. you'll get non-stop quips about "assless chaps" just about every day, but it means you can wear any pants you want, and still ride to work without worrying about scraping off your legmeat in the event of a crash. and if you buy a quality pair, you'll see almost no damage even after sliding down the asphalt at 80mph. i know because i've done it. chaps are great. i don't ride without them, just like i don't ride without my jacket, helmet, and gloves.

The $1000 price point is reasonable, but $500 to $600 would be more attainable. The higher cost may discourage some new riders from acquiring decent gear, so employing a bit of bargain shopping can pay dividends. A few of these items are unnecessarily premium brands that carry a premium price. There are comparable jackets available for $40-$50 less. Decent gloves with scaphoid protection for only $50. Riding jeans that include armor at the same price or lower. Those Alpinestars boots kill me; plenty of options at or near $100 for casual beginners. I won't argue much on prices of helmets, but most people are woefully misinformed regarding helmet safety ratings and what constitutes a safe helmet. Shop around for discounts to save money on helmets.
@180FiftyFive
Жыл бұрын
My beginner riding gear cost me about 750 euros and aside from the gloves (I'm on a 4th pair) it has held up for about 4 years/35k km or 21k miles. Knowing how long this stuff lasts and what a difference it makes when you have a crash, I would not encourage anyone to cheap out on gear. Theres a reason why it costs so much, it's definitely not just branding and price-gouging. If money is an issue, I would suggest anyone to buy a brand new helmet but find all the other stuff used. A lot of things get bought and then are unused or dont fit right once you start riding, and gets resold online. I got a 150 euro waterproof Dainese jacket with hard armor for half the price - it was basically untouched. There are plenty of second hand bargains but what I would NOT recommend is for anyone to cheap out on gear that could save your life or at least prevent serious injurious. Premium brands cost a lot because they offer much better protection. I've fallen with that same jacket and got up like nothing even happened. Boots especially can mean the difference between getting your heelbone shattered or having bruising. I've seen the metal plates sticking out of my friends leg and let me just say the money he will spend on two different shoe sizes for the rest of his life are not worth the 100 or more euros he could spent on good boots instead.
@patrickmchugh8039

Yeah, honestly you could build a gear set for around $300-$400 if you wanted to. We balance protection / features / reviews / and overall design quality into the equation though. Cost is definitely something to keep in mind but some features and protection is worth the extra couple bucks.

I don’t understand the concept of "beginner gear". Your head and body is not a beginner model, it’s the only one you’ll ever have. This falls under the "put a cheap helmet on a cheap head" category. I buy equipment by its safety rating and price. You CAN buy inexpensive top rated safety gear.
@orenovadia6590

Less dedicated gear, as in a full track suit is not beginner gear, more versatile gear is better for someone starting out so they can later on focus the gear to suit their needs. Now cheap gear still needs to meet the same safety standards so it's just as safe, but less feature rich/heavier. so yes beginner gear is a thing

Recommending only 1 helmet is crazy - different brands fit different shape of heads. For instance, I can't wear my Shoei because it fits round heads and I have oblong. I changed to LS2 and the fit is great. Revzilla has that advice on their site for buying helmets, but ignores it for the video?? I would expect at least two options for every component - 2 helmets for 2 different head types, 2 jackets (how about street vs adventure?), 2 gloves (warm and cold). It isn't that hard.

But Honestly, I used Shoei helmets for most of my riding life which is 31 years, and it's not only the brand but the model of the brand, then I discovered Nexx which is the only brand currently made in Europe and I bought 2 amazing Nexx models. If you crash, (let's pray none of us do) I had one crash in 1994 and you hit your head, which is very, very bad, if a Nexx doesn't do the job then a Shoei won't either. No man, gear is not like a motorcycle, you don't need to upgrade it for... Getting better at riding? Wait that is really your argument here? Are you joking? For crying out loud the less experienced you are the more prone you are to crashing or sliding and so you need good gear off the get go, and you then only replace the gear you have either when you crash and it wears out or when you grow out of it or it just isn't as good as good as when you got it a few years down the line. Like at this point you're emphasizing consumerism, which is exactly what revzilla is doing with this video, by introducing unnecessary upgrade paths for gear. The right way is to recommend good and safe gear, not cheap things like in this video but also not extremely expensive stuff like carbon fiber helmets and full leather jackets, but just good stuff that's also maybe a bit casual. Fortnine for example did a great video on that and in general they make better gear related videos than revzilla who seems to only be trying to sell their products and not actually care for what's best in the end for the riders.

@patrickmchugh8039

Great point, but seatbelts and airbags aren't really an option for the driver are they? Maybe the seatbelt, but theres laws in place to try and encourage that. Why is this scripted like a show on television? This is youtube where people go to get away from the crap that's on TV.
