I used a Jet 8” daily, hard, for 19 years. The only weak spot in that grinder was the switch. Baldor is made in USA and are legendary in the farrier trade. With that said, I bought another Jet for 1/3 the price of the Baldor. I will probably be retired in 19 years. I enjoy your channel. Thanks

Runs pretty smooth with minimal vibration which I will balance later to get it as close to perfect as it can be. I think it is slightly under powered upon start up but once it is up to speed it has sufficient power. It has cast aluminum tool rests that are fully adjustable and the LED light is a big improvement over the old incandescent lights. A lot depends on what you'll be using the grinder for. Sharpening lawnmower blades doesn't require a lot of accuracy or finesse. Sharpening woodturning gouges, which most turners do very frequently, requires a very smooth grinder. For woodturning, the current 'state of the art' is an 8" slow-speed grinder (approximately 1,700 rpm) with CBN wheels. A few years ago, aluminium oxide (the white or pink wheels) were the norm. However, CBN wheels cut faster, generate less heat, never change in size, and last for years of heavy use. For lighter weight CBN wheels, 1/2 hp is sufficient. For heavier wheels, a 1 hp motor is a better choice. (CBN wheels either use an aluminium or a steel base, with the CBN crystals plated to the base. There are advantages to each.) A lot of woodturners get Rikon 1/2 hp or 1 hp slow-speed grinders. The 1/2 hp costs about $140 and the 1 hp runs about $220. The grinders come with aluminum oxide wheels. The CBN wheels cost more than the grinder.
@AbnormalAxis

Great comment. For the same reasons you specified, I went with the Bucktools 8" - 3/4hp with the white wheel and a CBN wheel ($120) - $200 can't beat the value if you want to use CBN wheels. There are a lot of decent $175 grinders out there, but as soon as you upgrade to a CBN wheel, you'll be into it $300 and still have to deal with the crappy lighting and tool rests those grinders come with. The closest to the Bucktool is Rikon's dual white wheel grinder you mentioned and I own, but when you add the CBN wheel, you're well over $300. I was looking to upgrade the Rikon but for the money I could put another grinder on the bench and put a course stone on the Rikon. I'm very surprised at how solid the Bucktools' grinder is and use it daily now.

More important is the guard. The Midaco is awesome, if pricey. Most useful? If you can find one, a combo unit with one wheel and a 2” vertical belt. Basic set-up is two grinders, four wheels. Regular grinding, green wheel for carbide, wire wheel, and - my favorite - a Scotch 9S-FN wheel. RPM’s matter. Normal grinder spins about 1750 rpm. Too fast for sharpening. Add an 1150 or even a 870 rpm model to your shop - or invest in a frequency drive for the ultimate in control. Noise matters- forget cabinet mounting. A barrel filled with concrete works great.

With all the respect; a good/acceptable grinder is one which, if not bolted to a bench, will not start moving all over the place... On a side-note, know how to CORRECTLY install your wheels!!! Now that you have a grinder which won't move (vibrate), next level of refinement is the power; it should not slow-down or even stop on you while working with it. If you're the kind of person who accepts advice generated from other people's failures, trust me on this one and get yourself the JET 577102, which sells TODAY at HD for $269... Works like a champ out of the box and it's super-reasonable priced. I had to learn the hard way about grinder differences in quality, because like most of us, I trust(ed) brand names, even if they sell low-priced models; I always tell myself, "it's a XYZ, it can't be bad", but sadly, the price barrier does now allow for a quality jump...

In a machine shop, get the industrial one preferred a Baldor, the one in our mechanics shop must be about 80 plus years old and still kicking fanny. Casual users can get by with one that normally costs around $100 on sale at 50 or 60 bucks check clearance, open box, or if there is no more in stock talk to the manager and ask them about the floor model I have saved over 30 to 40% percent on some items I bought off the floor all with the same manufacture warranty and I have yet had to return or repair anything.

Be careful when looking at ISO certifications. What the certification means is that the factory has documented processes and follows them. So you get the same product all the time. But this does not translate to what most of us consider a quality product. Certification simply means the factory should repeatedly be able to turn out its widgets. If they are junk, they will repeatedly make that same junk over and over again. It does not mean anything they build is a better product.

I needed a bench grinder review a few years ago.... settled on a JET 8"... trouble is, can not find fine wire brushes in 8", so using the 6" brushes is not optimal. But the JET is well balanced, gets turned on and off hundreds of times a day. My Baldor, which is what I was looking for originally, is hard to find. One of the few motor companies still making stuff in USA. I will be selling Baldor Red 6" one, now that I am set with JET. Baldor ought to take notes from JET, and offer cast iron bell ends, rests and eye-shield components, where typically, you get stamped steel. SOME Baldor are imports, especially in 6" size. Issue with JET... local hardware store sells it with the tail light warranty.... it ends when they see your taillights driving from store. JET warranty is a mystery, but I never heard they were BAD... I just never heard anything other than the tools are pretty good. If you get a Hart, Wen or other hobby/home one, then graduate later, keep the lighter one for buffing and polishing. Don't sell it.... it will be handy OMG... DAYTON, even when Grainger acquired them, used to make the smoooothest motors anywhere. I RENTED a corded drill once, when I was a pup, away from home on a service call... that was the slickest drill... you had to look at the chuck to know it was spinning. MADE IN USA back then. Dayton motors were the Gold Standard, only competing with General Electric back then. Today? Quality? meh

For the amount of use I put on my low end Ryobi grinder roughly 3/year, for $10, it's perfect for my purpose. I have wire wheel and buffing wheels. Instead of buying a higher end grinder, I would just buy that sliding adjustable tool rest for $34. I have been eyeing that for awhile and need to just pull the trigger on it. The tool rest that comes with any grinder is not good enough for blade or chisel sharpening. Also, I wouldn't use a grinder to sharpen a lawn mower blade. It's just too small of a grinding surface for that. I did that before and didn't like the uneven results. I now use an inverted 3 inch belt sander and it's great. Also, knife sharpening with any power tool requires great skill. You can easily take off too much. Even pros that use belt sanders to save time will take off too much but customers get fooled because all they care about is getting their knife back sharp. I always use a fine water stone for knife honing. In general, only the knife factory should use power tools to make the first sharpening because that's when you want to take off a lot and their workers are so skilled at it. They do this as their primary job.

I have an old 6" bench grinder that works fine, BUT ;-) I am retiring it and am upgrading my 100+ year old big stone pedestal grinder. I have had never used big stones tucked away for decades. EVERYTHING I tried to shape or sharpen on my 6" grinder, even while dipping tools in water, blued. 3450 RPM is just too fast. I suspect that 1725 used on some of the 8 inch bench grinders, is also too fast, ideally. I have to get a couple pulleys yet to reduce the RPM's a bit more; aiming for a reduction from a 1.25 HP 3450 motor to around 1000 RMP's or slower even. I have another ancient 2 stone pedestal grinder that I have stripped, and am making it into a double wire wheel setup. Starting with a 1725 RPM 1/3 HP motor, geared down by about half RPM's or less. This makes a much safer wire wheel, less likely to throw off wires, and is much easier on the parts being cleaned. My big stones are not good for final sharpening, but will be far better for everything else I have been doing with a 3450 RPM 6" grinder. For chisel and turning tools, I will likely also just order diamond wheels and build a lower speed unit. Lower than 1725 RPM. Maybe use step pulleys for variable speeds as well. Likely build a sharpening jig too.

Grainger retail prices are grossly inflated. I think this is to discourage retail buyers. Companies with commercial accounts don't pay the WEB price. Grainger used to simply deny sales to people without business licenses or open accounts. Meaning no consumer sales. They changed the policy to where "if you really want to by retail from us, here's your price". Just about anything Grainger sells you can find elsewhere for half the price or less.

Couldn't be more pleased with its performance for that price even if it only lasts a month. I used it for almost an hour straight and can't complain at all. It's no Baldor, but it wasn't $500-700 either. Buy according to your work level. If you use it once a month, ryobi all day. If you use it every day and rely on it? Get the big boy.

The stories I could tell about wire wheels and deburring engine blocks at Cat. I would tape up my sleeves on a heavy jacket, wrap tape around my neck with collar up, wearing a face mask, safety glasses and even full face shield. I would have to go to an eye specialist at least once a week, one time 3 times in a week. The Company came out to see what I was doing and walked away shaking their heads. Never able to make that operation safe.

Get a Hurcules 8in variable speed bench grinder from harbor freight or a Wen 8in variable speed bench grinder. But for you that have more money get a Jet 8in variable speed bench grinder. And just to put it out there a buffer is not a bench grinder. If you do want an ok buffer get a central machinery 6in 1/3hp buffer/from harbor freight or if you have more money get a Jet 8in variable speed buffer. I hope this helps

Baldor makes their motors in the US. Everything they make is high quality, and made for 100% duty cycle under industrial conditions. The motors are completely sealed and will last forever...

8” has more rotating mass. Thus you can push harder and generally remove more material faster.

OK let me tell you how SPOILED I am getting, after having just upgraded all of my power tools to modern and top of the line. My bench grinder came in today. It is a DeWalt. With me, it s always a DeWalt. It's the 8 inch and, well, they don't sell 20 different models of this. It is the ONE 8" bench grinder that DeWalt offers. So I got it unboxed, I installed a wire wheel on one side, I slapped on al of the guards and I cranked it up. It started spinning around in a circle. That is what bench grinders do so, preflight check complete. Then I turned it off and went on to do something else. A minute or so later it was still spinning. So I tried to turn it off again, but it was already off. I thought "self, you handsome devil, is the switch broken?" So I unplugged it...and it was still spinning. Now I thought the time had finally come, and Skynet was in control. Then it hit me... "Self, you handsome but spoiled bastard, you have grown so accustomed to all of your new, modern, upgraded tools that you forgot...everything that spins does not have, nor need, a brake on it! So, I grabbed a screwdriver and stopped it the old Bedrock way. This must be what you Harbor Freight guys go through every day.

Got a Rikon 8" slow speed grinder a couple years ago, with the white wheels on each side. Changed to a CBN wheel on one side and left the finer White wheel on the other side. Works great for my chisels and plane blades before I go to the sharpening stones, but it is mainly for my turning tools. Stand, made mine out of 2x4s and MDF with wheels to move it easily to where ever I am working in the shop and I need the grinder. Thought I'd say something.

Old news but I bought a wen 6in grinder. First impression was cheap on top of cheap. Then I turned it on and had to grab it quickly before it fell off the table. Any way, long story short, I did all the tricks and more to get things balanced. Git it to a barely acceptable vibration. But this still bothered me. So I tore the whole thing apart and installed the shaft into my lathe. What I found was stunning. The right side part that the stone rests on was not in line with the rest of the shaft. It was machined off at a slight angle. So there is nothing I can do. Ok, later I might machine it straight and make a spacer to get it inline with the shaft. Will never ever buy a wen item again.

I have three grinders; a super old Taiwanese one that ran fine but was missing almost all of its parts, a Central Machinery for my wire brush and flap wheels, and I bought the Herc model to keep grinding wheels on.

I just unboxed a new Rikon slow speed 8" - at Woodcraft this month $109 which is $50 off, and I ordered it through Amazon so I got free shipping on top. For any curious, it's made in china. (as if there was a doubt)

Bear, I want to tell you... not related to the video in any way, other than that this was the video playing when I finished the task. I just finished sorting, categorizing, and properly storing all, ALL, of my hardware fasteners, brackets, hooks, o-rings, doohickeys, and all that type of nonsense that ends up filling magnetic trays, cluttering shelves with half used boxes, in drawers' bottom corners, mayonnaise jars, coffee cans and shoeboxes. Took 3 days.

A few words about parts and support would be nice. Especially for the variable speed ones where the control boards burn out after a while. For example the 8" Craftsman control board sells for $125 (if you can find one) which essentially renders the grinder useless where the Grizzly and Wen variable speed boards going for about $25 (reasonable). Delta on the other hand is never in stock. Just my 2 cents.

From what I can tell looking on their site the difference between the 2017 wen and the 2021 model is the 2021 model has LED lights built into the eye guards and the 2017 model doesn't.

Do you have a video on sharpening drill bits? And speaking of eye protection, any recommendations on glasses that doesn't fog when wearing a mask?
@Inferno5150

I wear t-shirt sleeves for a mask and my glasses don't fog. When I wear a mask I can't see a damn thing. The shirt sleeves get closer to your face at the top and have less restriction at the bottom so the air goes down, not up. At least that's how it works for me anyway. I wear 2 sleeves at a time so that might make a difference as well.

i bought a WEN (sorry I don't remember which model but it was around $60 5ish years ago) both grinding wheels basically disintegrated with the slightest use. The trueing mechanism seems like a good idea but that wouldn't have saved my model.

Many thanks for this excellent video which covers very well the subject. I have now a much better idea of the situation of this market in USA. In comparison, here in Europe (France for instance) we have less choice in the area of variable speed bench grinder than what you have in USA and it is entirely made in China. We have european products and these are as expensive as what you have in USA (more than 800 euros for an 8 inch variable speed grinder). I have two 6 inches single speed grinders and two 8 inches (one is variable speed and one single speed). Again, many thanks for this excellent video and for the very useful information included.
