I love anyone ambitious enough to grab Malazan AND The Wandering Inn, in the same year. You sir are a high level [Reader] If you continue the journey with Erin and Ryoka and the Horns it will only reward the effort. So glad that GOTM made the list. I'm currently only 3 novels in, but my word, this series is just so special. I'm really happy that you enjoyed it. Trust me, it just gets better. And yes, you will get more exposed to the lore, the magic/warrens, chars, etc. as you journey along. It's slowly but surely getting more and more attention across the globe as it so very much deserves, and I hope people pick it up and experience it for themselves. Honestly, Malazan is truly epic. And Erikson is a genius. Cheers!

«The Veiled Throne» by Ken Liu (book #3 in the «Dandelion Dynasty»), «Under Heaven» by Guy Gavriel Kay & «The Winter King» by Bernard Cornwell are my main contenders for best book of the year so far. Followed by in no particular order (as of yet): «The Farthest Shore» by Ursula K. Le Guin (book 3 in the «Earthsea» series), «The Winter Road» by Adrian Selby, «Salammbo» by Gustave Flaubert, «The Retreat from Avalon» by Sean Poage, «The Little Emperors» by Alfred Duggan, «The Dreaming City» by Michael Moorcock (in the Elric Saga) and «The Way of Edan» by Philip Chase.

"At Kuala Nor the seasons turned with sun and stars, and the moon lit green grass or made silver the snow and a frozen lake.... two men met there each spring, sharing a cabin by the lake, and labouring together to lay to rest the dead." 😭😭😭 If you haven't read A Brightness Long Ago yet, it's just as powerful as Under Heaven, GGK at his best
@MacScarfield
10 ай бұрын
@@e.matthews Yeah, «Under Heaven» has so many great quotes: «A friend had died here today. There was blood on the bedding. There was a new hole in the world were sorrow could enter.» «Soldiers or poets - who could drink more? A question for the ages, or sages.» «Red song of war arrows, red sun» «Cold stars shine on white bones» «What is friendship if it comes only when the wine cups are readily filled?» And how a book can have a cannibal scene straight out of «Blood Meridian», a wholesome scene of 6-year old Li-Mei dancing AND have me laughing out loud of poor Bytsan having to serve under his own father, without it being jarring at all, speaks miles of how great of a writer GGK is! After I read «Tigana», «Lions of Al-Rassan» and «A Song for Arbonne» in 2021, which all could be my one number book of that year, I decided to space out my future GGK reads: I read the «Sarantine Mosaic» last year (making «Sailing to Sarantium» my nr. one book of that tear), and plan to read «River of Stars» in December. Plan getting to «A Brightness Long Ago» and «Last Light of the Sun» next year!

Read all the books and you will see how intricate the world building is, the histories, lores, the Wars and the Story itself.. Great list - My top books/series so far this year: - Gunslinger series by Stephen King. I especially liked Wolves of the Calla, The Drawing of the Three, and The Wastelands. I still have to read the finale, The Dark Tower, next in my TBR. - The Faithful and the Fallen series by John Gwynne. Malice didn't work for me, but I'm glad to have kept reading, because Ruin and Wrath were both fantastic. - The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang. My favorite stand alone, and my second favorite read of the year so far (just slightly behind Wolves of the Calla). - The Band series by Nicholas Eames. Kings of the Wyld and Bloody Rose were quick reads full of action and I had a blast reading them. - Mistborn Era 2 by Brandon Sanderson. Tress of the Emerald Sea is an honorable mention, but The Lost Metal and Shadows of Self were even better. I also really enjoyed The Bloodsworn Saga by John Gwynne and Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree. It's been a solid reading year!

My favorite reading experiences of 2023 so far are: "The Dandelion Dynasty" by Ken Liu, now my favorite Fantasy series and "Blood Over Bright Haven" by M. L. Wang. Other books I really loved: "The Book That Wouldn't Burn"- Mark Lawrence, "The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi" - Shannon Chakraborty, "Perdido Street Station" - China Mieville, "Talonsister"- Jen Williams and "Lone Women" - Victor LaValle. ( The last mentioned is more of a Historical Fiction with some Paranormal Horror.)

Imagine a WORLD with worlds [or warrens] with characters ranging from primordial gods down to a fisherman’s daughter, with unmatched humour, philosophy and world-building, spanning 100s of thousands of years with countless religions and pantheons, and a change in paradigm every time characters or ascendants’ motivations click all the way up to The crippled god. You have Malazan book of the fallen. An aptly titled series..

I was so confused with Piranesi in the first 40%, and then it clicked. Enjoyed it a lot, I wish the ending was a little bit more vague in a more magical realism way rather than fantasy (occultism vs a schizophrenic episode), but even with the more clear ending I still liked it a lot. Yeah, The Lost Metal was an amazing "Cosmere book", but lost a little bit the Mistborn magical juice. Still great, but I get why people liked it less and why the community divied into Cosmere fans and people calling Cosmere "MCU of books" with a negative conotation (same for the last Secret Project). I'm team Cosmere, give me ore intertwined plotlines!!! Again, Sword of Kaigen is unmatched in emotions, but try her next standalone - Blood over Bright Haven. It is not as emotional and tear-jerking, but it's extremely impactful just like Sword of Kaigen! Great literary value for fantasy with some philosophy weight that I usually don't expect in fantasy (especially tiny fantasy stand-alones). I feel so overwhelmed to start any of Malazan, Dresden or Wheel of Time :( I will start and try to finish one of the 3 next year, not sure which one. Malazan's community scares me with the "it is so complex that you will need to read the whole series 5 times in order to understand it". Wheel of Time is just big and people say it has slow/not great boks and books with main characters missing for the whole book. Dresden everyone says "it starts not great but becomes amazing" (and lately I'm hearing that the quality in the latest books has lowered again). I always imagine Dresden to be like the Supernatural TV show which is too YA for my taste and not enough magic. And too simple and episodic without an ovearching story from season 1 to the final... Probably will leave Dresden for after I finish WoT and Malazan

I’m eagerly waiting to see your next One Piece review! It’s sad that they are not performing well on your channel right now, but give it some time. Maybe your main audience isn’t into mangas and you’ll have make more One Piece content to attract the fan base. I’d suggest to make your reviews covering a whole arc or saga instead of a few chapters at a time. So you can talk about more stuff and better analyze the characters and everything that happened. And now talking about books, I’m currently reading “The mirror visitor” and I’m hooked. I really love the fantasy setting, the special powers of each family and the characters are very interesting to follow.

Valour by Gwynne (4) 14. Best Served Cold by Abercrombie (4) 15. A Little Hatred by Abercrombie (4) 16. A Time of Dread by Gwynne (4) 17. Malice by Gwynne (3.5) 18. A Time of Courage by Gwynne (3.5) 19. A Time of Blood by Gwynne (3.5) I've been lucky so far this year and not read a bad book. Abercrombie's First Law universe books have obviously been my favorites of the year so far (I read the original trilogy last year). I enjoyed Gwynne's Faithful & the Fallen series but was underwhelmed by his follow up Of Blood & Bone; didn't hate it or anything but it wasn't nearly as good as F&F.

I think it clicked perfectly with the beginning of the pandemic/lockdowns - a story steeped in isolation, uncertainty, meditation and being eternally indoors. I think it was delightful being in 1st person narration of such an hopelessly optimistic POV, piecing his existence back together. It was a sure 5 star read for me that I want to read again, but I'm unsure how it will hold up when it no longer has the genuine mystery of the house to lean on, save for experiencing it though Piranesi. I'll want to be in the right mood - probably not everyone is/was hungry for that sort of story.

I'm a huge fan of this channel because it is the opposite of the woke gay Daniel Greene.

Just curious: so you are enthusiastic about everything you read? You must have really low standards.

uhh no lol, I give lots of criticism on books I read. This is simply my 'best of 2023' so all of these ones I'm pretty enthusiastic about, and the point of this video is to recommend them not criticize them.

I have a terrible memory, I’ll forget most details of a book within few weeks. As someone who reads a lot do you remember all the books you read??? @capturedinwords

I'm the same but I have epilepsy which makes you get constant forgetfulness and brain fog. It makes it hard to read😔
