Before people make an idiot of themselves, please remember Durston tents are made in Asia too 😁 Please also remember the benefits of Sil Nylon rather than jumping on the marketing train 👍 Petra and Dan (Hilleberg and Durston) will not lose any sleep (or sales!) over the Cloud Peak 2 and Yun Chuan 2. Lanshan fans seems to be fairly quiet. However, this review has definitely annoyed X-Mid fans. Please remember this is just a tent review so don’t get too aggy. Put it in perspective. It appears Durston fans are going all out to protect the X-Mid. This is quite ironic as they shared this tent in the first place. There is also an irony that by sharing this video, and making tonnes of comments, is actually making this video explode 🤦🏻♂️ I see this tent as an alternative to the Lanshan 2 (hence the title) and not the original (funds permitting).

They're SEWN in Asia, however the design is Dan's, and the assembly house was selected specifically because it is the best available. And he absolutely sells it while not making as much profit as he otherwise might to make the tent more widely available. At the end of the day, this is stealing intellectual property. Likewise, the Lanshan stole their design from Six Moon Designs with the same outcome. I support neither of these knockoffs.

Cost. These things are produced in relatively massive volumes, so silicone sealing them industrially would require acres and acres of floorspace, and 6 to 8 hours of the fly being under tension for each one being sealed, so the cost per tent would be higher. 3ful charge, what, an extra 35% of the cost of a lanshan pro to factory seal it? Summat like that. The other option is the one that doesn't require being left pitched for hours to seal: seam tape. Which you can't do on a silicone coated surface. Which is why lots of the bigger manufacturers do sil/PU coated nylon, so they can tape the PU coated side. You pays your money and you makes your choice.

😱 AMAZING QUALITY 😱 - Just got my 2 person (outer only) and very, very pleased. 570g for a sweet tarp-tent that sets-up easy and has massive amounts of space inside. The zippers are great quality, the sewing is impeccable, and it has a beautiful pitch with only 4 pegs (even though I got 12). I think I'll order the 1 person as well. It's only 30g lighter but considerably narrower - about 50cm - which may be beneficial at times. Personally, I find it MUCH quicker and simpler to set-up than the Lanshan Pro 1 or 2 which need all those guy-lines and (in my case) guy-line poles to lift the walls away from my sleeping bag. This tent fits a tall person with ease ❤. It's just a wonderful ultralight backpacking solution. BTW - you'll need to get the X-mid Pro 2 PLUS to get the same fly footprint as the Asta Gear 2P... Thanks for bringing this to our attention, very interesting. The big difference I can see in the tents is the material, as a sil nylon tent it will sag/stretch and therefore will need adjusting to keep tension. The actual x mid uses a poly nylon which doesn’t sag/stretch. A big difference on a tent type that relies on tension to keep it stable. The poly nylon doesn’t absorb water like sil nylon. I’d also question how a tent can be produced that cheap- is it at the expense of worker conditions? The x mid isnt actually an expensive tent, it’s the import costs that kills it. Shame we don’t have the same kind of market that can produce the more innovative kit you seem to get in the states.

I had a lanshan 2 before I bought my X-mid 2p and what I wouldnt want is an X-Mid made out of silnylon. 1. Already I can tell the Astagear copy is a lot saggier than the X-mid which is made from silpoly. I predict when wet, with that much nylon on the broad sides and mid panels, its going to sag right down to the inner, no matter how tight its pitched. 2. Durston's customer service has been second to none. Somehow i dont think Astagear will have an avenue through which tou can discuss your issues as a consumer directly with the owner or his wife. You pay for what you get I suppose. Btw, it was me that first shared the images of this to the Durston Gearhead group. It was only a matter of time til copies sprang up but Dan isn't Hilleberg or MSR, Durston are a small company. The X-mid 1p and 2p arent priced in the range of Fjallraven or Hilleberg, even the pro versions are significantly cheaper than those brands. I also posted this in Paul Meisners channel on this tent. I feel a little bit like it’s a bad deal for Dan Durston, his tents look awesome and his design is clearly being copied. But there are reasons I feel totally fine buying knockoffs. With regard to his tents, there’s one issue that really bothers me. Like me, he lives in Canada in BC, so he’s basically a Canadian making a Canadian product. When I was inquiring about buying one, (I emailed him directly about it through the support email address) he was friendly and nice enough, but he said he couldn’t just sell me one and ship it to me in my city in the same province. The tents are manufactured in China or Viet Nam, shipped through a distribution center in the US, and when it gets back to Canada, I have to pay GST, PST and duty plus a brokerage fee. Granted I would pay GST and PST either way. Considering the company is here in my home province and I have to pay more for it than if I was in America, really annoys me. I have to pay $395 CAD for the tent. $71.10 duty at customs, $55.94 PST and GST. $522.03 is the total cost of the basic X-Mid 2. I’m pretty sure there is also be a customs brokerage fee on top of this. Yikes. I’m not rich by any means, but I love hiking and camping. If I can get something cheaper that has decent quality and a more affordable price with most of the functionality, then that’s something I will absolutely consider.

@@zarlydoug , not sure why the confusion. It is clearly explained by yourself. "The tents are manufactured in China or Viet Nam, shipped through a distribution center in the US, and when it gets back to Canada, I have to pay GST, PST and duty plus a brokerage fee. Granted I would pay GST and PST either way." The fact Dan lives near you is irrelevant. Most customers will be US based I would guess, so it makes sense to base shiping there and I thought most of the the tents were sold by a US company anyway? If you lived in near Apple's Tim Cook, would you expect to pick up a Macbook from his house and not pay import duties/local taxes too? Bear in mind US prices usually [and annoyingly] don't include taxes, they are added afterwards. Here in UK, government tax [20% VAT] has to be included in the cost price [unless selling only business to business].
@JeremyLawrence-imajez
10 ай бұрын
@BackpackingUK - Well if it was cheaper to manufacture and sell in Canada or whatever local place you live, that's how it would be done by companies. I would imagine local manufacture that would make the tents unviable. That's even if the skills to manufacture them are present.
@zarlydoug

@@JeremyLawrence-imajez I see what you're saying, but I'm not confused really, I am a little bit annoyed. Here in canada we're always looking for affordable alternatives because we inevitably have to pay extra in the form of duty and brokerage, as well as usually a higher prices for delivery. It's just the way it is, but for these reasons I am looking for company's here in Canada to by gear and save money on some ot the technicalities that come with ordering items from the US. I haven't come across many hiking gear companies based out of Canada. And now here's this great company right in my own Province, but it doesn't matter because the company is doing everything through Asia and then the US. I say all of this just to point out that it would be a nice change to have something made in Canada that wouldn't be subjected to additional costs because of trade agreements and duty while being shipped across our border into the very province the owner of the company lives in. That's all. At the end of the day there isn't really anything to be done about it, but because of the cost I will still consider less expensive alternatives in addition to the genuine article..

It may be the different camera angles, but there is something about the stitching and the overall shape that is not right or at the very least suggests that durability particularly in inclement weather will be problematic. The Lanshan by comparison is a tried and tested design. It has been around for ages and people know what they are getting. The X-mid is in another league though (you have pointed that out anyway) and it is all those little details that end up making a huge difference in the end. Given the Asta low price point you may as well get a decent tarp and a bivy which overall would most likely provide a better quality kit for a similar or lower weight. Thanks for the video. @@beatbasher one of the things that a customer is looking for is good customer service. If a person is considering which $700 DCF cottage industry tent to buy they are probably not going to be the type of person who would go with a cheap knockoff alternative. Interesting video but "Buy cheap buy twice" as they say ! I do like the colour though compared to my Xmid but it looks like what it is A cheap Copy AND flappy and when it gets piss wet through its true colours will stand out which will look ugly with it being thin sis nylon. You can add a tiny carabiner to the little tab with the magnet on the REAL Xmid and just clip it to the guyline to keep the door out of the way . As you said the magnet isn't fit for purpose and although this tent is trying hard to be an Xmid apart from inferior materials it is good that you can get both summer and winter inners which Dan is still working on .
@BackpackingUK

Don’t think sil nylon is an inferior material, you’re wrong. Sil poly is less stretchy (that’s why you see so many poorly pitched x-mids on uneven ground), it’s heavier and less durable.
@Olan...
10 ай бұрын
For that style of structure /design siil nylon will sag when it's wet and need adjusting and therefore be less stable and be more vulnerable once it has sagged in the wind. Do you think Dan Durstan would have got that bit wrong ??? You can see in this video how flappy it is at the end sections, it doesn't have the middle peg bout points.Plus you will get a lot more condensation with SN. I’ve got an issue with those middle peg points. If you use them it’s virtually impossible to keep the door open using the stupid magnets. The only way I can keep the door open is to not use those points. You have to agree though, there are more poorly pitched X-Mid photos than almost any other tent on the market. I swear owners don’t know what a rectangle even looks like! With hindsight, I should have fine-tuned the lines, maybe I’ll do a follow up video?

the market chinese offers tents that are excellent quality/price, always presenting their limitations. The 15 denier is too thin a material which in my opinion has little insulation. But for those who don't want to spend a lot of money or want to use these products only in the summer they are more than fine.
@northernswedenstories1028
10 ай бұрын
What do you mean insulation? The thickness of the tent fabric has nothing to do with retaining heat, especially when the difference between most tents is 15d to 40d. It's all about strength. Heat retention is the primary job of the sleeping bag and sleeping mat. Tent fabric thickness has no meaningful effect here
@mariomancuso5547
10 ай бұрын
@@northernswedenstories1028 in addition to the sleeping bag and the mattress that insulates from the ground, the fabric of the tent also influences the insulation. The thicker it is, the stronger it is and at the same time retains moisture better. I had a sil x peak v4 from luxeoutdoor and a lanshan. There is really no difference in the quality and thickness of the fabrics between the two. The v4 retained the condensation very well, absorbed it and made it slide very quickly, unlike the Lanshan where sometimes due to the formation of too much condensation (having the much lighter fabric) it dripped all over me. I found myself with a wet sleeping bag and the under tent not completely dry. The thicker fabric, in addition to being more resistant, is also more insulating.

15D is plenty durable for a backpacking tent. Big Agnes even makes one in 7D. Frankly, I wouldn't go anywhere near 7D, but it works in the right conditions. If we were talking about car camping or bushcraft tents that see a lot of traffic and pitch time, yeah, you'd want to steer clear of 15D. Depending on how often you use it you might want to steer clear of nylon altogether because nylon doesn't play well with sunlight and will rapidly degrade.

Interesting video, and good to show what else is out there, not only the hyped brands. The shallow floor might be a real killer for wet weather use. Agree about magnets being nonsense on the Durstons and other tents. Also, you really need to go out and test the tent on windy hills and in bad weather, sleep in it, and over multiple trips - just setting it up in a park isn't really enough to "review" any tent. If the quality is good and it will last I don't see any reason not to try it. Just depends if you don't mind nylon, or really want the poly of the Durston. Only 100g heavier too, and half the price. And yeah I am not keen on the Durston colours either - very boring. A dark green would be much nicer than the sort of "hospital green" they use.
