One thing to obtain with the Opinel - make sure to not store it in a moist area - the handle will soak and expand and it will be hard to open . To prevent that you can fry it in oil to make it water resistant - there are plenty of tutorials online on youtube.

The Opinel is quite sharp and can stay that way if taken care of - as you pointed out. However, using them as a kitchen knife - or in a cook set (so to speak), cleaning them can be tedious. They have lots of groves, corners, slots, etc. 'Stuff' can get in them and then difficult to get out. I still like mine, but I have to say it's found its way into my day-hike drawer. After years, I have settled on a fixed blade knife for my cook-kit - Morakniv. Cheap. Strong. Easy to clean, multi-purpose. I selected a colorful one with a colorful sheath - easy to see at low light. Luke, I love your channel and wholely appreciate your independent stance. I'll take a closer look at the long handled spoon/spoke. I currently use a cheap long handled ice-cream/sundae spoon. But I have to admit the spoon portion is quite meager.

A thick knife is hard to cook with as it splits food instead of cutting through. Is it a thinner version that I’m unaware of? I bring both a small opinel and a 13cm bushcraft knife as a last ditch self defense tool (but also survival bc of my bushcraft addiction)

@@denakelley4363 My preferred system is to take my Peak Refuel Freeze Dried pouch, open it at home & weigh out 2 equal portions into 1 QT Freezer baggies. I do this because there is simply too much food in one pouch for me to eat all at one time. I write on the ziplock baggie the name of the meal & how many oz of water I need to add. When I"m out on the trail & want a hot meal, I boil 20 oz of water with my Soto Windmaster stove inside a 750 ml Toaks Titanium cup/lid. Once I have a rolling boil, I pour 12 oz of water into a 450 ml Toaks Titanium cup/lid for COFFEE. I then pour the contents of the ziplock baggie into the 750 ml cup/lid with the remaining boiling water then put the cup into a Reflectix sleeve & bottom which I've custom made which helps to retain heat while the meal is rehydrating. Yes, I have a round reflectix cover for the lid. I'm a slow eater; the reflectix retains heat long enough for me to enjoy the entire contents of the meal while it is HOT HOT. I've never seen anyone else with a custom made Reflectix cover that they've made around their cup/pot/lid. Without the Reflectix sleeve my hot meal gets cold B4 I'm able to eat it in its entirety & I have to re-heat it. Reflectix around your cook pot/cup not only retains heat for a HOT meal it saves me from having to use more canister fuel. WIN-WIN. Greetings from Reno, Nevada.

Sea to summit long handled titanium spoon with polished bowl. I like it so much and found it so useful cooking in the field (back country), I even purchased an extra 2 and use them in my kitchen at home for cooking things like baked beans, even chilli or curry, as the flat end of the spoon ensures there is nothing stuck to the bottom of the pan when you are cooking. That's why I go with the spoon.

Spork, for sure. For my dedicated food processing knife, I use a small (d2) skeletonized fixed blade. It's light weight n VERY easy to clean. I never use a folder for food processing as food always finds it way into the folding mechanism making it unsanitary at some point. My small 2 sun skeletonized fixed blade keeps my food much more sanitary n no scales makes it easily hangable while I'm cooking; I never have to rest it on the ground etc. The opinel has a wooden handle so washing it after every use will ruin the handle. My little 2Sun knife is razor sharp n super light but it could process an animal if necessary.

I have the exact set you reviewed, Luke, and both spoons came in bright orange sacks with black string for closure...sort of confirms your suspicions, huh? I love the Opinel 8 and I bought it mainly because of the olive green handle. Several of my knives have olive green handles or scales. The Opinel's are made in France and I believe they were designed by a chef. They are bloody sharp, too, as I found out quickly while figuring out the locking mechanism which is unique to Opinel's. I removed the small leather lanyard as it really served no purpose. I also have a UCO hard plastic set, spoon and fork, that "sleeve" together to a regular utensil length. You pull them apart , reverse one and slide them back together; the length is as long as a Toak's spork and depending on what you're eating you flip them as needed. Pretty unique, cheap (Walmart) and feather light. I love these short quick gear reviews. Like thousands of others I love to see what the "good guys" use in their respective load outs. Half of my heritage is oriental and I cook a lot of meals that my mom would consider it sacrilegious to eat with a fork and spoon so I carry a pair of aluminum chopsticks in my possibles bag. As for eating steak, in my humble opinion, the Mora Companion makes the best steak knife :)

I have to have my fork, with long tines. Spoon I use when absolutely necessary. Just a personal preference. As for Opinel - it really is the best* knife you can buy for that money. I have #9 carbon and it has been my EDC knife for past 8 years. The one and the same, and it has taken a lot of abuse over the years, and even been through a few laundry machine washes. It is ridiculously easy to bring back to razor sharp with basically anything and keeps the edge pretty well. No, it is not a bushcraft knife or a chopper but it doesn't pretend to be either. I have Spydercos and Gerbers with all sorts of "super steels*, most of which are at least ten times the price, and they all sit at home in the drawer while the Opinel is always on the belt. The only thing that comes close to the pure simplicity and practicality of Opinel but in small fixed blade version is Terävä's mini Skrama with 8cm blade

It is nice and long, for those pouch meals. Meanwhile, Opinel knives are great pieces of kit. There's more expensive and exotic mixes of steel available, etc etc, but there's something rewarding about the simplicity of Opinel. Excellent starter knife, and definitely one people come back to.

i have an Opinel #10 (oak handle) knife. i bought it thinking it was just a cheap knife good for one camping trip maybe two. but it's actually a pretty good camp kitchen and utility knife to have around. it sits on my desk ready to open letters whatever else might come up. it's slow to deploy, but that's part of it's charm and i enjoy owning it very much. i can't see anything going wrong with it in the foreseeable future. i put a 20° polished edge on it, i don't recommend doing that though. the super sharp polished edge makes cutting 'slick' skinned fruits like tomatoes more difficult but for cutting meat/flesh or paper/cardboard... wow it's amazing. if you have need of a simple knife, get one. you won't be sorry.

The Opinel No8 is also available as stainless steel (inox) hence no rust. Great Review Luke I’ve got the Opinel No8 Garden Knife inox. Myself. I prefer the shape of the handle and the blade profile. Will look at replacing sometime my standard titanium spork, but works just fine So no rush. 👍🏻 Strength and Honour Bud.

The opinel knife is a great knife except for one problem. They will stiffen up when they get wet. The stainless steel is good for rust resistance but not as good as the carbon for ease of sharpening. I carried opinel for decades but I replaced mine with a Mercator black cat from germany. I use the carbon blade and put up with a little rust.. The lock is very secure and it will sharpen better than the opinel.. The opinel is a great knife but not a good knife for moist conditional. I have an opinel paring knife and a fillet knife in my kitchen right now. But for a sharp pocket type knife that is around twenty dollars the Mercator is a better knife over all. It does weigh just a bit more but I tend to carry it in my pocket as a daily knife anyway so the flat handle as opposed to the rounded wood handle (which is points for handling on the opinel) makes it a better pocket knife... I guess I have bought fifteen opinel knives as gifts over the years.. but I changed to the Mercator because of the better blade lock and the flatter handle.. The steel is the same...

Hey Luke! Have you seen the Opinel fold out wood saw? Nice and light weight and cheap. Picked up a couple the other day at a gun shop, they were only $25 each. Quality build like their knifes!! ATB, Bill

You can design a spoon and have it made in China. Then that Chinese factory will make more of it and sell it themselves or through another company and become your greatest competitor.
@P_RO_

Not quite correct, but close. In China, the factory usually owns the design of what it produces. Once the contract is fulfilled they can then make the design 'public' which allows anyone to use it. But almost always instead of someone else 'making a copy', they will give their contract to the original factory who is already set up to make it and can probably do it cheaper, which is the benefit of making a design 'public'. So Toaks could have originally designed these, not understanding Chinese law regards design rights. Or they may not have wanted to pay what the factory wanted for control of the design rights. It's not the usual way of doing things for the rest of the world but it works for China.

I picked up a Rakuen long handle titanium spork, instead of the Toakes, because I liked the smooth/polished bowl, and I couldn't find the Toakes one like that, but they looked almost exactly alike like you noted.

Thank you for this video. I have one of the unpolished Toaks spoons, and I cannot stand the way it feels when using it. I never knew there was a polished version. I have now purchased the polished spoon. I no longer cringe at the texture against my lips and tongue.
