I’m seriously going to borrow your idea for my cats! All the other tunnels I’ve seen have an open bottom which would be a problem with one of my cats. Knowing his determination, he would dig out under the tunnel even if it had a million stakes to hold it down. Your tunnel makes it impossible for him to do that. Eventually I plan to get chickens, so I would love to also do tunnels around the edge of my garden for them.

Nicely done! For all the people worried about how big the fence holes are - this is a space for ranging during the daytime when they can be supervised, and opportunistic daytime predators would not be an issue; and nocturnal predators would not be a threat. The chickens would be in their safe, secure space over night, and even during the day if people aren’t home to keep an eye on them. Looks fine and dandy to me!

I connected a 50 ft pallet fence to my chicken run this year to extend my yard then white washed it.Its beautiful! Now my yard is bigger and 3 sides of my chicken run can be protected by my dogs.The other side faces my house. Next spring I plan on attaching chicken tunnels to the pallet fence (on the inside) Connecting the tunnels to the inside of the fence hides them from public view, makes them stronger and better protects them from predators.Nothing can get on top on the chicken tunnels and crush them because the top of the tunnel is connected to the side of the fence.Out of sight out of mind.No one is able to see the tunnels in your yard (as long as they're up against the fence) If you planted shrubbery in front of the tunnels you can't see them from your house either.

I like this very much. Are you worried about the plywood door warping? I'm looking for a more . . . . shall we call it discreet? . . . . way to extend my run. I overbuilt my coop and made it look like a very attractive she-shed, but between chicken math and an eye to current world events I'm keeping a few (ha-ha) more girls than my city suggests.

@mollycatcolorado9252

If you are concerned about the plywood warping, you can seal it with stain or paint. If you are in a really humid or rainy location, look for marine grade paint used on boats and wooden docks. Or, you could use a piece of UV treated acrylic/plastic or a sheet of metal.
@EmilySchwartze

the welded wire fencing has open spaces which are too large IMHO. I use 1/4" hardware cloth b/c desperate predators can reach through the fencing you are using in this video. Animals that can 'grab' will reach through and pull and eat on whichever part of your feathered babies they can reach. Your video is great and you do an awesome job explaining everything well. I'd just use something with smaller spaces between the wire.
@Trid2bnrml1

you could always drill a hole through the top split 2X4 and continue on through the plywood door into the other half of the 2X4. You could then stick a dowel or pencil through there, ensuring that nothing could lift that door.

That cattle guard panels are big enough that squirrels can get thru, also likely hawks, per the tunnel system, don't know if you have neighbors but a dog could pounce on the tunnel trying to get the chickens and smash them yes? Take care. Just pointing out what ifs for the poor birds.

1/4” hardware cloth is the only material that will protect your chickens. Atleast a foot skirted at the bottom all the way to the top. Just doing the bottom will not suffice. Predators will climb and get in the larger holes. Very expensive unfortunately but many of us have learned the hard way. Milk, measles, rats etc can fit through extremely small holes. Just don’t want people getting the wrong idea that their chickens will be safe with this type of enclosure 😢

Chickens like to seriously dig around, so I think it would be so much better for them to have the tunnel floor free of wire and totally exposed so that they are better able to scratch the earth without the cumbersome wire barrier which greatly inhibits that activity, likely frustrating to them as well as possibly feeling real uncomfortable to their little soft feet pads, maybe even with the potential to cause a foot injury
@dachickenman281

I would love to be able to do that but, I move it around and rotate the position to give them fresh ground all the time! Honestly they pay that wire no attention at all. I don't have chickens yet but I am trying to get informed on building a coop, a run, and a chicken "chunnel" extension. I love that you didn't need to use any lumber for the tunnel part. I've seen where people build a wood or pvc frame then cover it with hardware cloth or fence. I'm just wondering if having the wire at the bottom will make it hard for the chickens to scratch around for insects? I'm new to all of this so I am genuinely asking. The ones I've seen mostly use ½ hardware cloth. But I see this one here is a fence with wider openings.

You are most welcome! I’ve lost so many chickens in years past to raccoons and possums that built this one as bulletproof as I could. And the tunnel is to keep the neighbors dogs from getting them

Not sure anything is simpler than a nice sized chicken tractor on wheels that can be put where needed instead of a dedicated area that will become unkempt.

Though you should know skunks can fit through that size wire. My chicken yard has that size wire, last year I watched a skunk walk through with no problem, their hair makes them loos bigger than they are. I only have to worry if I forget to close the coop door at night.

Drill a hole through the top 2x4's and plywood and put a pin, 16p nail anything will work. Peace of mind against things that might want to harm or eat the Chickens.

Ty for the tip! I put a Camouflaged net almost completely over the top of the enclosure and secured it with bungee cords and so far that has worked perfectly to keep the hawks from getting in

Bro that's Chit-mo. That would have kept Epstein alive. I was wondering why you didn't cement those 2x4s. Kiddig. Looks wonderful.

I watched this with the sound off, no cc, because I was listening to a different show on another device. Seemed pretty detailed, will do in the future for chicken tunnel or catio tunnel/walkway. I knew this is what I wanted, but not very good at putting things together, just see the finished product in my head, so this is awesome. I'm going to watch it again with sound. Hopefully, I can get my kid to watch so she'll help me build. Thanks for the video.

You are most welcome!❤️ your comments are the main reason I made this video ! I love building stuff and making things as easy as possible. I’ve been helped by so many people on KZitem with instructional videos I just wanted to share a little of my knowledge and ingenuity!
