I don’t understand the hate here. I’ve been watching 731 for awhile and have seen him grow in skill and he’s always been honest about his reviews and disclosures. You can’t hate on the guy for promoting his business. It’s what allows him to make money, keep making videos, and feed his family. As a craftsman that I trust I appreciate his tool reviews and I trust he wouldn’t promote it if he didn’t like it. I’ve been looking at some chisels and I appreciate he just saved me time and money from buying a similarly priced but inferior project. If you don’t like his tool reviews then watch a different video on his channel, he has 100s. Keep up the great work Matt.

100% agree. As a professional who owns/operates a high end custom shop, his videos are solid, and most of all honest. While I don’t always agree on opinions shared, they are always honest and certainly worth consideration. There are a TON of woodworking Chanel’s out there that are absolute garbage and present horrible advice. This is a great Chanel for those learning, and good for a guy like me to occasionally find tools that haven’t crossed my radar, yet.

Great Chisels, I have a set at the college I teach furniture making. The students love it when I let them test them on a dovetail or mortise. At home I use Blue Spruce Chisels, They are even better and come even sharper but at a much higher price. Don't buy the Narex thinking they are ready to use, they still need a little sharpening but in 10 min. you are prepared to go and they hold an edge for a long time.

I can certainly sympathize with a couple posters here about the price of these chisels. I wanted a good set of chisels for a long time, but just couldn’t afford a good set, so I bought a decent set I could afford, and they work fine for me. Unfortunately, I can’t really afford most tools Matt shows in his videos, and I’m pretty sure I speak for thousands of woodworkers. I’d love to have Festool power tools, a really nice dust extraction system, a wall of Bessy clamps, a SawStop table saw and Woodpecker measuring devices to name a few, but I can barely afford to buy wood since the price has gone up so high. I enjoy woodworking, and haven’t come across a project yet that I couldn’t make with cheaper tools. It’s great so many people can buy top of the line tools, but I simply can’t, so usually don’t watch a lot of Matt’s videos of tool recommendations.

The set I have I inherited from my stepdad. They are the Handyman Club of America. They are so full and though I’ve barely used them I did sharpen one of them and it has a hard time keeping that edge. I’ll be fixing that when I get the chance. You can make steel harder but it is a process for sure. Since I don’t use them often enough I won’t buy another set. When I do I’ll be sure to grab these as I love the refined look they have and the amazing reviews. Thank you Matt!!!

Love the chisels, I have been practicing dovetails all summer, and I was looking for a set of quality chisels, and I must say these are very good, not just good for the money but good. I was coming from an Irwin set and almost bought the sweetheart set, but decided to try out a richter, I thought if I did not like them it was not all that much, I really liked them, so much I picked up a 1/2, 3/8, and eventually 3/4. They have thier own drawer in my workbench and I built a holder for them, mostly because I reached in the drawer one time and grabbed the wrong end of the chisel. But now my drawer has holders and magnets to keep things organized. Like the video, I like the energy you present with, and glad to see taytools doing this promotions. I just got a couple of sets 123 blocks and a couple of sets of the clamp attachments, after seeing the million things you can do with 123 blocks video.

I found the same with my Richter Set especially on the long edges but varied from size to size. When honed the micro they produced was more than adequate for soft or hardwoods. I also have Sorby and Taylor Chisels to meet certain needs along with my old Marples Blue for site work. All in all as a Bench Chisel they met my daily needs.

I don’t do dovetails and such, and for the longest time i used a cheap set i bought from Home Depot, but any time i needed to do any real chisel work, they were pretty much worthless 5 minutes after sharpening. I broke down and bought the Narex Richter set and it’s like night and day difference. I no longer dread busting out my chisels to do some finer work. They were expensive sure, but the headache they save is really valuable when your time is money in getting projects completed. My old chisels now are relegated to getting rid of dried glue.

Hardness is everything. These are hardened to RC 62 minimum, the Rockler is RC 61, the Japanese ones start from RC 63. So, yes. 61 is still way better than most though. Achieving higher hardness requires higher quality steel.

Joseph, understandable they are not cheap. But cheap chisels aren't good and good chisels aren't cheap. I tried using a cheap set when I started, and you can see them in this video. They are just bad. And in woodworking, no matter if you're a professional or not if you're building certain projects a good set of chisels could be a valuable asset. I was given in the past with retiring colleagues in the same boat gave me keep sakes which I cherish. I still add to my chest with tools I come upon or are more pricey. It is like my cars, I have one in the garage I liked as a youth and now I can purchase them to scratch an itch. Tools can be the same, I find it sad when I see tool Box being sold and tool split up, the craftsperson who built the collection is then forgotten.
