Memory used to be at 100 while core was 75, now I can comfortably keep both at around 80 with lower fan speeds. Lower fan speeds = less noise = more enjoyment for me when playing. That's my justification. Of course good pads would have yielded good results too.

Here's a secret, the die is at the very bottom of the flip chip, almost touching the solder balls, well really there's an interconnect/substrate in between, but the copper links make for decent thermal transfer into the PCB, most of the cooling is through the PCB. The top is all epoxy, which has low thermal conductivity, high thermal impedance. Yes often you only have one way to cool the chips additionally, the PCB is already sort of a little too warm, you have to cool through the outside, which is unfortunate. But then it doesn't really matter which side's outside you cool through, since there is a good amount of copper between the opposite side ICs.
