Let’s not forget that Carl Palmer ( and ELP) were pioneers and pushing the boundaries way back in the early 70’s. Carl with his synth percussion on brilliant songs like Toccata and to reproduce that live then was just amazing. Carl is a very traditional but technical drummer and can no way be compared to the late great Neil Peart whose style was completely different. I love both drummers and it’s a disgrace that ELP have never been recognised in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! 🤷♂️

@@morbidmanmusic I've been playing drums for 15+ years. And I cannot name one example where 'traditional' (mind the word) grip has an advantage. It effectively limits your left hand to the right half of your reach. Players who use it must train to overcome this limit and it only puts strain on the left arm, but has no benefits compared to matched grip. It's purely a matter of what you've gotten used to. If you look at the kits of traditional grip players, they rarely put anything important on the left hand side. Great players who use it aren't great because of it, but in spite of it.

Wake up! Stop with the Neal Peart nonsense. Peart was never ever in the same drumming league as Billy Cobham or Carl Palmer. Peart is and always will be a solid rock drummer and a one stick wonder, but that’s it. At his very best Peart was never ever as technically proficient or as creative as either Billy Cobham or Carl Palmer. Neal Peart is laughably overrated and not even close to the upper echelons of drumming greats. Ignorance is bliss, until it isn’t.

Too much of the same going on here, I’m only impressed with his age and stamina. But of course he’s good… but Neil Peart was so much better and way more inventive with his solos.

Both of them are as stiff as Al Capone's corpse. I agree that Peart had a much better sense of structure. If you want inventive you'd better step away from rock drummers and listen to Tony Williams or Elvin Jones.

I remember watching a video of ELP in the 1970's and Carl Palmer was sitting in the middle of all his drums and the base was revolving around him and there were also drums above his head. I was fortunately able to see ELP in Atlanta.

@GraceandWisdom

@@bigelile07 I love too many excellent drummers to answer that question. Besides this is super subjective. And, it depends upon a persons knowledge of historically competent and famous drummers. Although I love ELP, I’m willing to bet if you ask Carl Palmer who does he think is awesome, he would probably mention Ginger Baker, Buddy Rich, Billy Cobham, to name a few. Finally, I admit it’s been a while since I bought an ELP record. “Tarkus” is my favorite, and I think I have “Pictures at an Exhibition.” To give you a picture, I still have CDs. They’re in the storage but, it’s been a while.

Yes. This guy is just a standard rock drummer. This is just a traditional rock style solo I've heard a million times before from a ton of other rock drummers. Joe Q. Public really don't have a clue.

@@peacefulbliss1 Standard rock drummer? Not many rock drummers this good with a traditional grip. Palmer was ranked as among the worlds greatest drummer of his generation, in the early seventies alongside drummers like Tony Williams, Billy Cobham, Ginger Baker, Barrie Barriemore Barlow and Bill Bruford and so on. Also, lets cut palmer some slack here, he is 71 with solid technique and feel. He is more rudimentary in his style then say a modern fusion drummer would be, but he was highly influenced by Buddy Rich, and had a traditional approach to drumming but with a twist, the two used to practice together by the way! Listen to his speed and incredible technique with this drum solo on the 2:50 mark on ELP / Karn Evil 9 1st Impression Part 2 / 1974 California Jam : kzitem.info/news/bejne/sWdvqKSIopx7d2k Def not your average rock drummer!

@@snuppssynthchannel You're entitled to your opinion. It's weird, I'm a rocker at heart, love great grooves and tunes, but I've never been impressed with rock drum solos. Baker, Peart... it didn't matter. they were wooden. They had no variety to their solos. Many had these enormous kits with the double bass, and I just thought they were boring. In comparison, I could listen to Joe Morello on a tiny 4 pc kit and be blown away. Jazz guys like him, Louie Bellson, Papa Joe Jones were artists on the drums. I don't view rock drummers the same. They were too limited and very repetitive. Watch this clip of a true artist at work kzitem.info/news/bejne/xneEuoh4r3uJoH4
