For those who are, for whatever reason, lacking in the understanding of satire, the reason this REALLY works is that Colbert built up the tension with the right-wing psychobabble you often hear on AM radio concerning Hollywood liberalism. That tension comes crashing down with the fervent statement I LOST TO BARRY MANILOW! THAT'S why this bit works. It reminds you that everyone, even Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity--or, for the sake of political balance, Randy Rhodes and Nike Malloy--are just performers looking for an award to feel validated. This is intelligent satire, and it's unfortunately lost on a few generations of Americans dummied down by the very thing these two are presenting awards for: Reality TV.
@jackal59
9 жыл бұрын
Absolutely true, and what sells it is both the writing and their performance. I find Stewart's discomfort after declaiming, "Award show banter is not pablum!" nearly as funny as Colbert's anguish, though the later gets punched up by the shots of people in the audience who are just losing it.

I wonder how long it will take for history to look back at these two and now, John Oliver, to sincerely thank them for just opening our eyes and telling the truth about the state of affairs through comedy.

Sometimes I think American humor has gone all to hell - based these days almost always on fat, dressed-down, low-life idiots with their crude schoolboy jokes, and sex and bodily functions. It makes me long for a Nichols and May skit. But then I watch these two guys and I realize that subtlety, elegance, articulate, intelligent satire, literacy, dressed-up dignity, and three-dimensional wit are not only alive and well - but still even widely appreciated. Bless you, Jon and Stephen.

I think maybe all DivineSimply does is watch Family Guy and makes assumptions based on a crude humour show that that's the way all Americans act.

I love how the Emmys give out an award for reality tv by having the two presenters insult it, and the applause by real actors and writers, etc.

It will be a dark day for satire when Colbert retires his character and starts hosting The Late Show. The genius of these two all-too-short minutes is a testament to that. Nearly every line pre-Manilow has enough meat to be dissected and discussed on its own, and Stewart plays the straight perfectly. Instant classic.
