If you are from one of the countries on the list, let me know if I chose the right songs! I included both ethnic and regional songs in this selection. If there weren't any ethnic songs that I found for a country, I put a regional song in first place. Regional are songs in the native language, belonging to genres specific to countries or just sounding unique to a certain artist, like Montaigne for Australia. Should have been included: Sweden: 1. 1996 - folk, New Age Australia: 3. 2018 - pop with aboriginal dances
@WriterLilyth
3 жыл бұрын
I don't know if movement counts, but Jessica Mauboy, an Aboriginal Australian, incorporates traditional indigenous dance moves during her song - even though 'We Got Love' is standard pop. That being said, Montaigne is awesome and hope one day she can rock out for real on the Eurovision stage.

Rock N Roll is an American genre, the British adopted it soon after and that's how The Beatles came about but every British entry is classed as a regional entry anyway because all British entries have been performed in English because most of the artists don't know any other language

I’m Portuguese and your choice is a correct one although I think 1996 and 2009 would have been even more ethnic or even include a fado (1976 or 2012). Not complaining tho. And I’m happy you chose Turkey 1997 (I was worried you’d choose 2009). That’s my all time favourite Turkish entry. 👍

I'm from the Netherlands and I think "De Troubadour" was the perfect choice! I was almost afraid you would have chosen "Ik Ben Verliefd (Sha-la-lie)", which is maybe the most typically Dutch sounding song in ESC history. Personally never really was a fan of that one. The mediaval sound of "De Troubadour" however.. love it, it's brilliant! (And even more so if you understand the lyrics!)

About the yugoslavia one, although it is an ethnic song, it's more representative of the west coast, slovenia, croatia and south bosnia. Every single republic within yugoslavia had and has a specific sound, and the sound of yugoslavia as a whole would have definitely been rock, or maybe even ethno/folk rock(second half of 80's). Albania’s 2019 song is honestly one of the best songs I’ve heard from Eurovision and it doesn’t get anywhere near as much credit as it deserves. So beautiful and haunting

Great video! Ethnic gems is one of my favourite reasons to watch Eurovision! The song you picked for Greece is quite Greek indeed. It is ethnic ( just folk actually) but a too weak representative. It never became a hit in Greece and I don't wonder why. My pick would be 2011 which is a great song and the definition of ethnic. Didn't you recognise it as ethnic or you just hate it? :p For Cyprus you picked my most hated entry ever in Greek. :p It is ethnic, it has a recognisable Greek-Cypriot sound but it's just a very bad song :p My pick would be 1994 which is a real masterpiece. Those lyrics with that performance always give me goosebumps.

Kinda surprised that Sweden's entry 1996 wasn't even mentioned - group was One More Time with the song Den Vilda (The Wilde One) which I'd say is inspired by Swedish folk ballads. If you liked the ESC winners Nocturne (Norway) and The Voice (Ireland) you'd probably like this one.

I also thought of that. "När Vindarna Viskar Mitt Namn" isn't at all about swedish nationality

@@insertname6057 Sorry I thought you were listing ALL of the "ethnic" songs on the righthand side, and then the video was the one you picked as your fav. If you were just listing your other favs then it's totally fine, my mistake XD

For France, there is also "Et s'il fallait le faire" (2009), to me it sounds more French chanson than "L'oiseau et l'enfant" (1977). Good video overall, even if I don't really understand some choices : Moldova 2018 entry is more ethnic than 2009 ?

Being from the UK, I was interested to see what you chose as I don't think we've ever sent an " ethnic " song.

I agree, and I think you should definitely send something ethnic! Send a song with bagpipes or other cultural elements, and with lyrics fully or partially in Scottish or Welsh. This way you'll likely make it into top 10. Maybe the UK could send something similiar to "Je t'emmènerai danser" from France's national selection?

Interesting and very detailed video. Made a lot of work in it obvoiusly. That is subjective of course - and not so important - But sometimes I disagree with the Music style descriptions. Many songs you call schlager I would simply call (simple) pop 😊 But a lot of good songs here. Always good with some originality in ESC. And Finally justice for the Czech entry 2007 - One of the best And most underrated entries ever 🎶🎸💛🎤 Kabat were longtime rock legends at Home
