I played this game on the Commodore Amiga back in the day (1990?). The Amiga had multiple joysticks that worked very well. No calibration required. So you could easily play with your friends on arcade or campaign mode. What a blast. I'll always love this game. Star Control II was cool but nothing like playing Star Control I against a human opponent. Good memories.

Hi! I wanna thank you for keeping this amazing classic alive! I've played it a lot before 20 years or more! They didn't put those upgrades from the planets in Star Control 2 unfortunately! For example: Control jets, thrusters, dynamo... I remember how much I loved piloting Earthling Cruiser with 2 or 3 thruster upgrades... it was an unstoppable beast. Or Vux with control jets upgrades! I've tried every starship with different upgrades! You bring back memories! Wish you best, captain Larson!!!

I agree. Star Control is the best game ever. Back in the day I beat melee as either faction with any one ship on any difficulty though through pure luck in some cases. I remember one time getting the strut of the cruiser 'stuck' just off center in the pylon of a dreadnought which then pushed me along at its max speed but could only shoot past me. Destroyed it with the point defense lasers. It took a long time.Making the Mycon punch itself in the face with the Ariloo skiff is my favourite. That or making a dreadnought crash into a planet until the time was just right to deploy the shofixti glory device. Earthling cruiser with extra thrust is awesome. The starmap was and is still revolutionary. I think most people just lack the spatial perception to appreciate it.

What's with all the trolls? Anyway, I've gathered that the DOS era was a magnificient time for strategy games, and I'll surely be checking this one out soon. The ethos behind game design was different. Back then, sheer cerebral stimulation was the measure of a game, not technical achievement (though, there was no shortage of it with the smaller budgets) and _certainly_ not realism. Even the simulations had to be fun. Strategy/Tactics hybrids are fast becoming a favorite of mine since I discovered Master of Orion, Age of Wonders and X-COM. Having only played the second Star Control, I had no idea the series was a progenitor of the genre! I'm going to be kind of up-front and awfully opinionated, but... I truly despise high definition graphics. Modern games are the way they are because so much of their budget goes into ridiculously high-resolution textures, lighting engines and cinematics... The resources of a studio are limited, and quality design has lost the sway it once had. Our collective obsession with HD and our purchasing decisions to that effect has shaped the market such that tech bloat dominates commercial gaming. The indie scene fares better. Dev teams are making gorgeous pixel art (And no, I _don't_ mean faux-retro programmer art), truly beautiful assets with only small teams. Small teams are, incidentally, another important ingredient for a good game. Too many cooks in the kitchen, and all that.
@Erlisch1337

This is pretty much fact. :) I'm almost only sticking to the indies, even on the newer consoles (ps4)...theyre just so much more fun and innovative. And pixelart will forever look alot better than 3D.

What I remember is I had an Earthling Cruiser with 2 thruster upgrades and 2 fuel capacity! It was awesome! Or MMRNMHRM with more fuel cap. or YEHAT with more speed, MYCON with more speed and control jets was a destroyer :D VUX also with 3 thrusters :D Definitely good old times! They should put those upgrades for the ships for us to find them with the planet landers! For example as this UR-QUAN warp pod in ALPHA PAVONIS 7. While we gather the minerals we can find a thruster suitable technology for some ship (YEHAT for example) and if you don't have YEHAT yet you can keep it and the moment when the revolutionaries give you 4 TERMINATORS you can upgrade one of them with this thruster! I guess you guys got my point! It will be far more interesting! Thanks again for this video buddy! :)

I loved this game! I recall that each ship had its strengths and weaknesses. Some of the best parts were discerning what ships you should construct to counter your opponent's. A great example was using the Mmrnmhrm to counter the mighty Ur-Quan. I personally liked to deploy the Arilou Skiff right next to a planet and let the gravitational pull do the damage. I really wish they would redo this game for the new systems(that would include a classic version of course.) Another thing I'd like is a more definitive backstory about each race and their ships. That really adds to the overall experience. Anyone else agree?
@AquaticIdealist

+Mikeg73070 A better source of lore would definitely be great. You came across the manual, right? It kind of sort of describes each race. But it leaves out things like the Androsynth, their motivations beyond their hatred for being enslaved, and how they interacted with the Vux (the relationship seemed professional at least with the Vux showing concern when the Orz show up) and the other hierarchy races. Were the Androsynth blinded by hate? Or were they just frustrated people who were stuck with sterility and the knowledge that any following 'generation' would be nothing more than clones. No possible genetic diversity for them...

I agree, starcon 2 was great, and I mean GREAT, but there are aspects of this game which i missed: The fact that you had to build different type of colonies to grow your fleet, secret technologies that could advance your ships. Yeah, those were great times, when game genre's were born, and original game concepts were still created. Nowadays, games fit into neat categories, is usually an enhancement on something that is already done, and game play became secondary to great graphics.

The strategy section of this game gets a lot of undeserved hate. I love the 3D map, and the little animations when you build a mining base, colony, fortification, or when you destroy them... PS I totally forgot you could fund precursor upgrades for the ships! PPS I did not remember the asteroids in this game are affected by the planet's gravity... the same is not true in SC2, is it?
@Arilou_Wyvern
5 ай бұрын
Gravity does still impact asteroids in SC2. You can regularly see them speed up just before hitting or flying past a planet. Seeing one caught in orbit around a planet (like at 2:57) is a rarer sight, but possible in both games. You can replicate it fairly easily in SC2's Super Melee with an Arilou Skiff. Hang out next to a planet and when an asteroid approaches, position your ship between it and the planet so that the asteroid bumps into you. It works best with slow moving asteroids that are on a direct collision course with the planet. Try to get them to bump you after the gravity causes them to speed up and set your opponent to "Human Controlled" to give you all the time you need to play around. Alternatively, just wait around near a planet in a Skiff and do nothing. Eventually, one that has the right speed and trajectory will fall into orbit all on its own.

Thanks for this review! In truth it's what inspired me to actually pick up Star Control 1 from GOG and give it a go. But I do need to nitpick on one point. Star Control 2 is no less of a thinking man's game than Star Control 1. Star Control 1, due to the limitations of movement, does indeed force the player to consider ambushes, make better use of star systems (a feature that was unfortunately removed in 2). Star Control 1 offered absolutely cool upgrades from said systems, and was definitely a complex and thoughtful exercise, but those aren't enough to discount Star Control 2. In 2 one is also ambushed. One has to maneuver through waves of enemy patrols in order to loot certain devices or reach certain destinations (weaving through Mycon and Umgah waves come to mind). Even with prior knowledge of ways to avoid slave trading, preventing genocide (of either the Thraddash or everyone when the Death March starts), or restoring the entire Alliance of Free Stars one still has to make tough decisions. You need to keep track of what systems to mine, how disastrous the expedition might become, how many bio units it'll take before those blasted Melnorme finally give you the tech and info you need, and so forth. Star Control 2 is chock full of tough decisions related to resource management, tactics of maneuver, combating enemy patrols with the right ships, or even what fleet to bring with you. Star Control 1 has the convenience of two well-balanced fleets that fight for dominance in deep space. In 2 the Alliance is gone, and all you have left are your wits and bravery to restore it. Not to mention the horror that is the Sa-Matra if you fail to restore the Alliance to its former glory. (Aka help the Yehat redeem themselves.) I know there are those who would say that Star Control 2 is the 'better' game, and that might be true in terms of graphics and freedom of movement, but both are wonderful examples of what gaming is capable of. People just tend to neglect Star Control 1's full game and seem to assume that the unbalanced, free-to-choose-your-ships nature of Star Control 2's melee makes it better.

I will agree with the video blogger! StarCon 1 was the BEST!!! I loved the Full Game mode. We need a remake!

dude I had star control for sega genesis. I'm seriously heading to ebay to get another copy as I lost my original in a trade gone bad. I actually understood how to play the starmap as well.
