RetroMoments The thing with the pound and hyperkin cables is that people constantly mistake them for upscalers simply because it’s HDMI when that just isn’t the case. They’re straight through bypass converters and nothing more. RAD2X on the other hand is in a competently different league. Not only does it tap into the native RGB signal of the console but it line-doubles. THIS is what you want to get for anything older than the Xbox 360
@RetroMoments

@@bronzin1445 Id love if they were straight passthrough especially for consoles like the ps2 and psp. 90% of the time they arent and they are upscaling to 720p which introduces input lag. This is why they are the superior option amongst the two.

@@bronzin1445 - The Pound and Hyperkin cables are scalers. They scale to 720p ( Its fixed ) and do not bypass the signal. And yes you are right the RAD2X is much better, and correctly handles the signal, but it is also twice the price of the others.
@josko50
4 жыл бұрын
@@albey1816 I was going to say that too. It's not that they don't scale--they do scale. It's that they use chips that were designed for scaling television or movie signals, where latency and "pixels" were never a consideration. Worse yet, the Pound and Hyperkin cables introduce variable latency. If it were a consistent latency, your brain would get comfortable with it, and you would time your button presses accordingly. With variable latency, your brain can never get used to it. You'll always be missing things that you *know* you should have landed. The RAD2X, Retrotink, OSSC, and OBS Control give a crisp, latency-free experience. Framemeister is also great, because even though it introduces 1 frame of lag, it's a consistent 1 frame.

@@Matt-Rat I haven't used any of those systems you mentioned, but since they all use a conventional 720p HDMI output, they all should work the Elgato HD. I've used a Cyber Gadget Retro Freak with mine and that works fine. You can use the HD Retrovision cables for recording, so long as you have something to upscale the signal into something that your Elgato can use. If you have an OSSC, you can feed the HD Retrovision cables into its component inputs and linedouble them to 240p. Unfortunately, the Elgato doesn't like anything greater than 2x coming off the OSSC and doesn't even recognize any PS1 resolutions or even the Dreamcast VGA mode coming off the OSSC, so I needed to route the OSSC through the HDMI input on my old SCART to HDMI to get any use out of it. Adam Koralik did a video on the device in question. A Framemeister is more fiddly and more extensive, but might be a simpler option than daisy-chaining all these devices together.

RAD2X are the best retro cables to get for playing your retro consoles on a modern LCD/LED. The scaling options are all programmed inside PCB board so this works great for the casuals and "hardcore" retro gamers. For anyone who needs to play their retro consoles on a modern TV, the RAD2X is amazing! But for the "enthusiast" who are able to mod, re-cap, and possibly RGB bypass their consoles. They most likely play on a PVM/BVM (ie CRT) using RGB SCART cables or an HD Retrovision cable. Along with a scaler such as the framemeister or OSSC to play on a modern TV, the RAD2X probably isn't even on the retro enthusiast gamers' radar. But we definitely respect it!

I plan on getting a set of these for my own review. But without even using it, I can see two problems with the cable. One, there is no passthrough option. While linedoubling looks great on 240p and 288p games, it looks horrible on 480i and 576i games. I'd much rather that content be deinterlaced the normal way. And second, there's no workaround for light gun games or otherwise splitting the video to a CRT. If you're playing with HDMI, that forces you to use a HDTV. Since the RAD2X defaults to composite video if it can't detect RGB, why not include a secondary TRRS port that would allow you to send HDMI to a HDTV or capture card and composite video to a CRT for lightgun games.
@WhiteJarrah
4 жыл бұрын
@D. Well I AM a video expert, I'm a professionally trained filmmaker and restore VHS tapes for a living. Bob-deinterlacing is still linedoubling. In this case, you are doubling the lines that make up the fields. I've seen it on the OSSC and the RetroTINK 2X - it looks horrible. Think about what it is you are looking at. With 240p you have all 240 lines that make up the frame, so the linedoubler has all the lines to work with right from the word go. With 480i content, the device alternates between drawing the odd-numbered lines that make up the frame first and the even-numbered lines second. Meaning at any given time, the linedoubler only has HALF the image to work with. Linedoubling that means the resulting 480p signal is missing half the vertical resolution, resulting in an unnaturally blocky and vertically stretched image. Not to mention the vertically, making the picture look extremely unstable. The Framemeister and even cheap SCART or Component to HDMI upscalers use a process called waiving. In which they buffer each frame, take the odd and even numbered lines that make up said frame, and put them back together again. THAT'S how 480i and 576i content should always be processed.
@thomasharte500
2 жыл бұрын
I hate to wade into this late, but a real CRT does the equivalent of bob, and full 50/60Hz titles often do the on-spec thing of having each field be a capture of the moment at which it is serialised rather than being half of a static frame, especially in the PS1 era when that means not having to keep a 480p framebuffer. Weave is an option only if you make some phoney assumptions outside of the PAL and NTSC specifications, and is what often leads to combing artefacts in cheaply-converted material. It is most definitely not “how content should always be processed”.

@ians_parks

@@ians_parks That is true. But for the person that this is aimed at, it's the common TV owner.. Common TVs have shocking lag and shocking motion blur. Unless you are buying a TV/Monitor you will get lag. TV/Monitors are thousands of dollars. Pretty well out of the price range that this device market is aimed for. Besides, I'd sooner use an old CRT and get the real deal.. Even with all the bells and whistles in the world, LCD still looks jaggy compared. CRT has zero blur and has zero lag and keeps the perfect aspect ratio. . And can be had for almost the price of a cheeseburger. It would be interesting to see what this would be like using it with a CRT..

Licensing issues hold alot of games back from being rereleased on modern consoles. Especially if they are niche and cant turn a profit.

Over the years I've purchased 3 of their PACKAPUNCH RGB cables, but I replaced the one for Sega Saturn with a Saturn RAD2X (which it looks like they currently don't have available online right now). This is a much better solution since now I don't need a SCART-to-HDMI converter. Now if they would only make an Analogue CMVS compatible RAD2X, I would be SCART free!!!

It would be great if I could buy them. I’m waiting for Sega Saturn and PS2 cables to be available again. I have one for the Megadrive and I am very happy with the quality. I also made a video on this cable. Just need those other 2 cables to be available now. I’m waiting patiently 😬

It does work with the ps2 although its 480i rgb being bob deinterlaced go 480p. This helps to reduce input lag but makes the image appear slightly jittery.

I understand that old TV's are getting harder and harder to find and parts even more so, but I have a nice, big Mitsubishi TV from 98 that still runs great. Not to flex that in the comments but I prefer the picture from those types rather than conversion

Kinda surprised these retail at close to £50 per cable to be honest. I've thought about pulling out my old retro consoles for a while (I own a SNES, N64, Mega Drive, GameCube, PS1 and have a fair few games for all of them) but lack of TV inputs are a real pain. It seems like retro gaming has become increasingly more expensive in recent years. Or has it always been that way and I'm just being an uneducated swine on the subject?

48 pounds. These cables cost 48 British pounds, roughly equivalent to $63 USD. Don't know why none of the comments I've read or the video itself don't seem to just directly say the price as the price point is a pretty big factor when deciding whether or not you should buy these cables.

I unfortunately can't use these cables because of my setup, but more specifically due to my capture card and one specific console I want to capture/stream from, that being my Super Famicom aka the Japanese SNES. I can connect it to my capture card, the Intensity Pro 4k by Black Magic Design via its analog breakout cables through composite and it looks and mostly sounds okay, but I'd prefer to use my HD Retrovision Component cables and my RetroTink 2x with all my consoles, but here's the catch: my SFC when linedoubled and even when not has an oddball refresh/sync rate of 60.05 Hz. That results in my IP4k going nuts and not understanding the signal at all and it shows a scrolling image effect, making the footage 100% unusable. I'd love to have a direct HDMI solution for my consoles, but financial reasons aside, I don't have enough HDMI ports to hook them all up as is. With all that said I did get a device that corrects the 60.05 Hz problem but that introduces audio distortion that I won't stand for, so me streaming what I want to stream from my SFC is on hold until I figure out what to do. Great video though, Jason! Always great content on this channel!

Wish there was an HDMI cable that had a CRT filter mode. Like on the SNES mini. Gamecube is only retro console I own but being the EU version, I don't have that 480p option. But it looks amazing on a CRT with an RGB scart. I still feel the best option for me is to buy a CRT TV.

The retrotink is good for consoles like the nes and atari if you don't want to mod them. Having one of those is a companion to the rad 2x cables.
@ananiasgames3389

Just a thought, and somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the sega genesis will only "easily" output upto composite in the U.S. (without modding / multiple adapters, ect ). So what I, as well is I'm sure a lot of other people have been doing is using composite cables to hook up to a retrotink then line doubling. This however, is pulling the RGB signal and then line doubling... sounds like a solid option for any console that this cable can pull the RGB signal from! Here in the U.S. at least! Haha!

MetalJesus: Real big question, hope you can answer it! does the PS1 cable drop signal when the render mode changes? This is a huge question primarily spurred on by the fact you played Klonoa... When I play my PS2 Klonoa 2 on my PS3 60GB console, a change in render mode causes the screen to black out for a few seconds between level transitions. I'm curious if you've seen this on any games or on Klonoa itself? thanks! Edit: nvm you anwered it when showing Silent Hill... awesome!
