When I first got my hearing aid 6 years ago, there wasn't much information out there about hearing aids. My audiologist hardly explained anything to me and I didn't know what to ask either. My first hearing aid was the basic Resound model that had no volume control button. The only thing I could do was change the settings. I love that I can now hear better now but I wasn't in love with my hearing aid. Sometime it would be super loud. Then I got another hearing aid for my other ear through the state and they required the model that has buttons where you could adjust the volume when in a very noisy area. I had no idea that was even an option. I love my new hearing aid right away. However I had mention that my right hearing aid is a little uncomfortable and I don't wear it often. My audiologist just said that my right ear is a lot small then my left ears and didn't offer much help. Recently I went to get my hearing tested again and I asked about new hearing aids since mine has started to have a buzzing sound. It was obviously time to get a new one. Again my audiologist was not very informative so I started to do my own research. I don't think a lot of audiologist who can hear normal, really understand how important the features on hearing aids matters so much to someone who is deaf or have hard of hearing. As someone who likes to go out with friends, do activities, and live a normal lifestyle, I want the best hearing aid out there is so I can live my best life comprehending and conversating. The information you shared in your videos are so important and should be part of every hearing aid consultation. From the small to big features on the hearing aids, it all make a difference. Thank you so much for making these comprehensive videos about hearing aids!!!!

For readers, list the hearing aid names and price right from the get go. Then discuss them in order. The omission of price is a serious disservice to the customer. A price range would be good enough. People need to know a model brand name and if it is $1000 or $5000. The first question I always ask is, “What is the price” and it doesn’t matter if it is a new roof or a pair of sun glasses. If your product is out of my range, I need to move on along and waste neither your time or mine.

Thank you for an excellent video! I had been trying to decide between the Phonak Audeo Paradise 90R and Oticon More for over 2 months. I loved the technology of the Phonak but for some reason, my Audiologist could not explain every time the Autosense would change programs it would make a musical tone, so loud that my son and husband once heard it. Became very annoying and returned them for another set of Phonak's. The same thing occurred, frequent musical tones throughout the day even if my environment didn't change. The Audiologists spoke with Phonaks technical service and they couldn't explain it either so finally decided to try the Oticon More 1, picked them up yesterday and so far so good. They do not have some of the features that Phonak has but the sound quality is good and no longer do I hear the program changes. Seems no one else has experienced this, maybe I am the odd one out :)

@marylpn1… I appreciate your thoughts on having a Phonak before Oticon. Also, you’re not alone with Phonak sound frustrations. Mine speaks or makes other sounds at times but I don’t know why and can’t understand what it’s saying. I also wear a cros, so there’s no app (Phonak discontinued when I’d had about 6 months) and have been caught off-guard when it died. As much as I enjoy the sound quality and Bluetooth capability of Phonak, I feel I need to consider something else.

@@ceebotti778 I have had my Oticons for a month now and am very happy with them. They don't have the more up to date technology as Phonak but do what they are supposed to do, help me hear better and the clarity is great. The Audiologist told me patients sometimes complain about Phonak's speaking and other noises but that is was because they had Siri activated and it would sometimes get mixed signals and talk without a question being asked. You should give the Oticon a try, if you don't like them after 90 days you can return them and try something else. You have nothing to lose~

I've had hearing challenges since I was in the 3rd grade. I was using them until someone teased me in class and stopped using since. 30 years later, I found myself getting my hearing tested and in the market for hearing aid. Obviously have matured since then and looking forward to the advancements in technology now. I have moderate severe to severe hearing loss in left ear, right ear is still doing well. I'm not sure if I can purchase just one hearing aid as I don't really need one for my right ear. I'm seriously considering Phonak Paradise Life since I do a bit of hiking and want that extra protection for sweat and possibly wet conditions while hiking and camping. This video has been really helpful and looking forward to my next appointment on Monday.

Today I ordered my first pair of hearing aids after being tested last week. I went to an audiologist with the results of my hearing test because he was the closest to where I live. When I found out he was wearing hearing aids I blurted out "I want whatever you're wearing!" Obviously I'm a bit self conscience and their invisibility piqued my interest. We talked for a long time and ultimately I ordered the Oticon More standard. (base level) I can't tell you how relieved I was when I watched your video and I felt I made a decent choice. This whole thing is a bit mind boggling because it feels like there so many technologies out there and it's hard to get my head wrapped around it all without getting a headache. I'm a stage manager that directs from the back of a room, sometimes 300 feet from the stage. Granted, there is a very nice and powerful sound system in the ballrooms where I work, but I am also wearing a headset on my left year talking to the crew and though I have been assured I can adjust things if I need to between the left and right sides, I'm pretty anxious right now! You have a very reassuring presence and I'm hoping these work out as easily as I have been assured! Great video!

I've had hearing aids for many years. My original Phonak models had a telecoil, but I never went anywhere that I could try out the technology. I switched to Costco because I could no longer afford them through my audiologist, but my current Resound model does not include a telecoil. I hear that more theaters and other public spaces are getting hearing loops. I'm curious to hear from any of you out there, how well they work, and whether it's worth going for next time around (which is coming up soon).

I'm a hearing aid user for decades, having started out with analog hearing aids back in the day (the 1990s). I have some experience with a variety of hearing aids and the various manufacturers. I've had Siemens, Phonak, and Audibel/Starkey hearing aids, and now looking at Oticon. An important consideration when choosing a hearing aid is the company itself and their response to customer service. How reliable is the company? Does the Audiologist have a good knowledge and working relationship with the company? Are products/ accessories/ repairs/ service readily available from the manufacturer? The main reason I am selecting the Oticon More 1 over the Phonak Audeo Paradise P90 is company reliability. Both will meet my needs of severe to profound hearing loss. I currently have an older pair of Phonak Audeo hearing aids, and have been waiting nearly a year to get a replacement receiver in canal in the proper size. My audiologist was able to fit me with an alternative length, but it is not the best solution. She simply has not been able to get any receivers from Phonak. She stated that supply chain issues with Phonak have been a problem, including actually providing hearing aids to her in a timely manner, as well as repairs and service that need to go back to the manufacturer, frequently resulting in hearing aids going back to the manufacturer for weeks or even months. She stated the this has not been the case with Oticon, that they deliver products in a timely manner and that the repairs/service are done quickly and thoroughly. Use due diligence and ask your Audiologist about company reliability; how quickly they are able to supply the product, what is their turnaround time for repairs or service if the hearing aids need to go back to the manufacturer, and what is the warranty and do they offer an extended warranty option at the end of the initial warranty. Be an informed hearing aid consumer. Thank you to Dr Cliff for providing these informative videos. Having watched several of them, it is obvious that you know what you are talking about and not trying to promote a specific hearing aid brand. Open and honest opinions on the brands reviews is always appreciated.

D O, you definitely want to go in armed with as much backgrounding as possible, to a very knowledgeable audiologist. But don't wear yourself out trying to grasp the technology. Use what you learn to compile a list of "wants" to share--your personal hearing challenges--and let the expert figure out the best technologies for your situation. That could include what typical sound environments you're in (talk vs background noise, e.g.), how tech savvy you want to be, and your actual level and type of hearing loss. Bells and whistles optional, but they matter. Sometimes, because they're all good in their own ways, it comes down to a seemingly minor thing that tips the balance toward one brand vs another. In my case, a few years ago, it was the only brand that offered remote access (so I didn't have to drive to the clinic for everything), as well as rejecting my previous brand because of its awkwardly placed buttons (very annoying to use). Now it's being able to access Bluetooth on two devices at once (iPhone and iPad). "Kid in a candy store" comes to mind. You can't have everything, but choose well and you'll be happy with what you get. Go for it!

Go to an audiologist with two things in mind, what type of lifestyle you lead (ie...how social are you) and what kind of budget you'd like to stay in. Not everyone needs a $5000 pair of hearing aids. Make sure they offer multiple manufacturers and then trust the person who's doing the fitting. You have a trial period, evaluate the devices, but also evaluate the audiologist. I have ReSound hearing aids that have the microphone in the ear mold and the sound quality is crispy clear the best I have ever had. My biggest issue is the life of the expensive hearing aid being 5 years which I believe is too short.

There is no reason to conclude the life is limited the life is limited to 5 years. Rechargeable internal batteries can be replaced at the factory. Before the end of the warranty, have your provider send it in for a free factory clean and check with a request for a battery change. That will give you another five years.

Are there audiologists who offer their services of comprehensive hearing testing, evaluation, and consultation but do not sell hearing aids? If so, where do you usually find such audiologists?
@DrCliffAuD
Жыл бұрын
I highly doubt you will be able to find an Audiologist that does everything except for the dispensing portion. It would be like going to a surgeon for a knee replacement and having them tell you to go get the knee from somewhere else and bring it back so they can implant it. However, there are many Audiologists that will service hearing aids purchased elsewhere.

In your KS10 and Phonak Paradise comparison you mentioned that the KS10 and Paradise do not have the latest technology. But in this video you say the Phonak Life hearing aids are the latest technology but that they are based on the Paradise. Please clarify.

does the Resound one still have a microphone on the top of the ear and inside the ear? I tried hearing aids a few years ago and gave up because I could not get used to them., but really need to get some now. Following your channel is helping me to be more informed when I go to an audiologist. I am wondering which you would recommend for someone who has sensory issues. The noise of just brushing my hair back drove me crazy with the BTE ones I tried before(and the wind sounds--I love outdoor activities), and the sound was so artificial and made everything loud , not just conversations. The in the ear types made me feel very plugged up. I am leaning towards the Resound because of the microphone in the ear, and claims for more natural sound. Any advice?

I just received my ReSound one 7. First time I have hearing aids. There is a microphone on the hearing aid so I do hear it when I run may hand through my hair. The sound is not loud but I do hear it. So far, I am very pleased with the ReSound one 7. The cell phone app is great for controlling sound.

I am brand new to hearing aides due to losing my hearing in one ear this year. I am trying out the Phonak audeo P paired with the Cros. I am extremely active and sweat a lot. My audiologist said the Life hearing aid isn't compatible with the Cros at all. These things do not help me with background noise and the sound quality is awful compared to a cheap pair of ear buds. For the price these things should have fantastic sound quality. Also, it seems like the mic doesn't pick up sounds that I need to hear in front or the side of me. It's like the mic is pointed in the wrong direction. I hear things behind me but not in front of me. So weird. I am disappointed.

Left ear is missing some higher pitch sounds vs the perfect hearing right ear. I am an audiophile so only need the left ear hearing aid. I have one demo the More 1. What would be the best hearing aid company for only listening to music for 4 to 5 hours a day? I have very mild loss in my right ear at age 69.

If you can use Zoom on your Laptop or Desktop computer, you can turn on the PC Bluetooth and pair them with your Starkey . I am assuming that Starkey Livio has Bluetooth. Or Bluetooth your Starkey to you cell phone??? If you don't have an Apple iPhone, but a Samsung etc ANDROID, some make it more difficult. In which case buy an iPhone, It a pain going from an Android to an iPhone, but I just did it.

Hi Doctor Cliff, I am new to wearing hearing aids. Your wonderfully informative videos helped me greatly to make a choice for my first pair. I chose the resound one and had been loving the Bluetooth capability. A week ago my Samsung phone (S20) received an upgrade and now I can't seem to hold a connection in both aids. Only one or another will hold the Bluetooth connection. It's been a nightmare as I have to continuously restart my phone and never know when one or the other HAC will drop. Can you please give me some insight on how to fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ReSound ONE is primarily intended to be used with an iPhone. It uses the ASHA protocol with an Android device. I am not a fan of the ASHA Bluetooth protocol. I would try and change to an iPhone. Also, I had an S20 and upgraded to an S21 as fast as I could because the S20 was horrible.
