Awesome. I've always been a believer in cant. But this cage look awesome as is cheeper so that definitely a win. I hope they will make these for many different blasters and maybe give us some higher crush options. Great vid as always.

This was definitely something we wanted to do, but didn't have a good way of accomplishing it on a short time frame. We wanted to get this video out quickly, and we didn't have time to build something to hold the blaster on a short time frame, and our next few weeks are going to be very busy. Hopefully we'll have something built in the next month or so and we'll revisit this testing as well as test some other setups. Edit: I can definitely tell you there was a bit of human error in our testing, but I am an above average marksman and have years of real steel experience. I kept the point of aim within 1 inch of the point of aim on pretty much every shot, so I'm confident in my results. I agree it's not perfect, and we say so in the video. We had me shoot the target instead of Adrianna because she is a much worse shot than me. I chalk that up to growing up with firearms experience and years of being a photographer. The response to this kind of testing is really overwhelming, so we'll do what we can to try and pursue improving it in an improved way in the future. -M

Another reason for canted cages accuracy is because the spin induced turns the dart into a gyroscope as it is flying, thus making the dart itself fly straightly not in direction but in orientation. This makes it so that the air surrounding the dart does not have as much surface area as a sideways or angled flying dart to "push on," making it stabilize itself much like an arrow and not allowing the dart's flight path to curve mid-flight. Thanks for the great videos!

Finally something at least close to the DRS cage in accuracy and with MUCH better availability. We have the BSP cage but it's not metal, the metal cage feel just adds a sense of quality to a build. Super excited about this, might pick up one.

That Heston's cage setup seems pretty sweet, what motors and LiPo did you use? The DRS canted cage seems to actually work as described though. Do you know what blasters the Heston's cage would fit in? As I really want to mod my 3 Rayvens. Or am I stuck to Stryfes and Rapidstrikes? Thanks for the video, as usual!

The explanation for the better accuracy from a canted cage on the linked Dr Snikkas page is gyroscopic stabilization. If the dart is spinning as it flies, theres less variation in its trajectory. Its like spiraling a football. Though this also seems, as per your testing, to slightly reduce the dart velocity. But it seems like a pretty minor reduction to me. I doubt youd miss many tags because of it
@weaponizedemoticon1131
6 жыл бұрын
Technically, in Nerf applications it is both what they said, and gyroscopic stabilization, which is why with a lot of cant the darts destabilize, since the twist rate is greater than the ideal for a projectile of Nerf dart length.
@shadowsa2b

Weaponized Emoticon it seems like the whirly birding mainly happens with canted cages paired with stronger power sources like LiPos. i wonder if it would happen as much with IMRs
@joeofdoom
6 жыл бұрын
I havent seen any out of control whirly birding from canted cages apart from Zombonas Hyperfire which was more a product of him using honeybadgers for the flywheel motors than anything else, Drac's Hyperfire with proper flywheel motors and Walcoms Deleter both work fine so it doesnt look like Lipos are the problem.
@shadowsa2b
6 жыл бұрын
joeofdoom why would motors effect the spin of the darts that pass through the wheels, unless the motors dont spin the wheels stably?
@joeofdoom
6 жыл бұрын
Honey badgers on a 2's LIPO run at about 43000RPM most motors spec'd for use as flywheel motors clock in at between 33000-37000RPM. The extra spinning speed from the higher RPM motors seems to cause a gyroscopic precession in the darts which is causing them to tilt off axis resulting in the "Whirly bird" atleast thats my reasoning from the data I have available to me. If it wasnt the high RPM of the motors Zombona used I'd expect to see the same amount of "whirly birds" from other hyperfire or canted setups but thats not what you see.

I thought I'd want the Heston Typhoon cage for my new Stryfe (in transit) with Neo Hellcats, but the note about only working well with fresh darts is making me seriously reconsider... ...the cage, not the motors. I'll look for a cage/flywheel combo that doesn't need a fresh dart every time to work well, and doesn't rip the heads off like the Eclipse cage and wheels.
@FoamBlast
6 жыл бұрын
You don't need brand new darts every time, but using worn out darts from a community dart bin is the source of most people's troubles for cages that don't have a feed ramp. I don't have a feed ramp in my primary, and I've never really noticed and increase in jams over the DRS cage. I probably have 4000 darts through my Desolator at this point. Like we said, if compatibility with old darts is important to you, there's other options for you. There's also feed ramps you can glue onto the cage if the cage is otherwise a perfect fit for you. Some people like myself don't really like feed ramps, and it adds to the machine cost. I've had some of the worst jams I've ever experienced with my DRS cage. I've never had to walk back to my table to clear a jam on my desolator, but I've had to twice on my DRS cage. I've had similar jams on OFP cages with their feed ramp. Sometimes a dart is going to jam no matter what you do, and a feed ramp forces it into the flywheels with no where else to go. This can cause catastrophic failures like the dart folding in on itself then getting pushed through the flywheels anyways and jamming on the other side with no way to pull it out (what happened with my DRS twice and once with an OFP cage at Endwar last year).

A good way to test this theory would be to film the dart in super slo-mo and see if it turned orientations before or after the flight-path changed. if the orientation changed first, it would prove that air resistance on the foam bit of the dart is what causes inaccuracy, if the flight path and the orientation changed simultaneously, it would mean that mid-air dart orientation does not affect accuracy as much as i thought it did, I would be wrong, and I would have to go plague the internet somewhere else. Yaayyyyyy!!! Science!

I would absolutely love to see that! I forgot to mention that this is also why short darts are more accurate, because they have less air resistance on the sides and are not as affected by flight orientation. I always love it when physics and nerf have little joy babies and an episode like that would make my day! (: Thanks!

Not to sound too critical, but your data is not uniform and it bugs the heck out of me. Having only half the data to compare from one cage to another is just not an effective protocol. I would love to see chrono stats with a higher dart count or at least have equal darts fired for both cages.
@FoamBlast
6 жыл бұрын
It bothers us too, but we were running low on darts. Since the DRS has been around a while, there is likely some chrono data from others to use as a baseline, but right now our data is the only available for the Typhoon and felt it was more important to spend our resources there. We will likely be doing more testing later as well.
@dracon5700

Again, sorry to sound critical. In an ideal world we could do testing in 100 dart iterations since I personally feel that is a minimum needed to determine a meaningful average. I appreciate your response, and as always, keep up the good work.

Not to sound overly negative, but are you going to buy our darts? If you feel our testing is not up to par, feel free to do your own testing, the community will love you for it. I was apologizing for sounding critical in the first part of my second response. I think you folks do great work and I am glad that you gave me a response explaining why your data was delivered in the way that it was. It makes sense to me why you would do it that way. I have supported your store in the past, and will continue to do so in the future. I was not trying to sound sarcastic by saying that 'in an ideal world' it would be great to have 100 dart iterations. This wasn't me trying to suggest that you do this. It was an attempt to convey that I now recognize the difficulties of your experiment. I am sorry if what I said sounded like I was mocking you or diminishing your work. Paid top dollar for a cage that didn't work. It would work so so with elite darts but who wants to use that? I ended up using a 25mm round dremel tip to open the loading port. Then spent about an hour sanding it down. That's when it finally worked with waffle heads. There is a new gen out with a loading assist but I have no experience with it. Stay away from gen 1s
