Happy Monday Julie, 🙏 Thank you so much for this video. I'm an Interior Designer who started back in the '90s but, because of some major health issues I've not been practicing for over 8 years so. So it's really a refreshing to watch your video. I'm glad I found your channel and it just gives me a refresher what's new be and going on now. Definitely gets the creative juices flowing again. Thanks and have a great day. What stuck out to me was the use of colored cabinets I have a 16 and 1/2-year-old house that we custom built with beautiful cherry cabinets raised panel cherry cabinets . I could see the use of having my island sink breakfast bar area painted in the olive mossy green that matches the veining in my stone inspired porcelain 18×18 tile floors. Anything but white cabinets again. They've used them at nauseam, so it's refreshing to see the use of other colors used in a kitchen. Thankfully we have 10 ft ceilings as well as five large windows as well as a French door off the kitchen that brings in lots of light so t, If We went with a green paint color around that area along with the existing cherry cabinets , it doesn't make it look dark. Take care 🙏💐🌅

Great video! I disagree, though, about the statement slabs. I find those to be gaudy even now and I think in 5 or 10 years they are going to look really dated. I think of timeless styles as ones that are subtle and adaptable to different eras…that big veined slab look is too specific.
@MademoiselleRose40

I've noticed that seems to be a trend in American kitchens. I find them incredibly ugly. I see them all the time on the US reno shows. I think they'll date too, although they look very 70s to me already. It's interesting different countries have different trends.

LOVE these ideas! It gave me clarity on the next big project - painting the cabinets and island. I've been wanting to go with a sage green on the cabinets with warm wood counters, and a darker island but I'll keep the white countertop (I think). The pot fillers for pet bowls are a big yes, and the water filling station is genius. We were talking about putting in a coffee area but seeing what you had in the video solidifies that fleeting thought into full-steam-ahead mode. Girl, you're dangerous for my reno budget!

Yikes, we're headed back into a dark age of style it seems, lol. It's not all bad, but feels like people are just, "trying new things" in hopes that they discover something that sticks. I honestly feel most people would walk through those kitchens and after they leave say, "Yeah, not for me" in order to be polite. It feels a bit like there is a hope of expensive items making up for lack of cognitive style. These are just my thoughts, I represent only myself in them.

I am IN LOVE with your tiled vent hood photos!! So amazing and they look like kitchens from old European homes. I don't feel it's a trend, though, it just shows you had enough funds to finish the kitchen off correctly. So beautiful. When I lived in Northern Cal we had our cabinet doors removed and taken to a spray shop. I was horrified by what the lower shelves in our island looked like after just 10 days. Thick, greasy dust settled on our pots and pans. This was just from everyday use, there was no construction going on in the house. I shudder to think of the dirt that would have been kicked up had we worn shoes in our house or if there were pets. Open lower shelves are a no-go for me. Thanks for the videos , Julie, keep them coming!!

Some great ideas except....the open lower shelving might work if you have a separated kitchen in the French or Italian countryside with perfectly matching copper pots and pans but for the rest of us you still have to deal with dust and assorted, not always matching or pretty cookware. If the kitchen is part of a great room that is not what I want myself or my guests to see. I love the ledge but not the 2 color backsplash. It reminds me of every formica counter top with the 2 inch trim around the backsplash. I think the look is cleaner with a slab or tile starting at the counter top. The coffee stations are brilliant!

I also liked your comment about natural materials never going out of style and noticed many of your inspiration images had wood cabinets. That has helped finalize my decision to go wood vs paint. I’m leaning toward walnut lowers with maple uppers, but I am still playing with the upper wood decisions, since I need to see how those 2 woods would work together. Thanks for sharing your ideas with us.

I would mix uppers and lowers when you have minimal materials in the space H. One solid countertop, maybe run that slab up the backsplash or coordinate with another tone on tone material. What about installing kitchen islands with legs (like the work tables seen in English homes) where you can see the floor under the island-instead of just one big block like most kitchen islands? They use work tables a lot in the deVol kitchens featured in Netflix's "For The Love of Kitchens" series (AMAZING show BTW) and the look is SENSATIONAL! Big work tables are not as common in American kitchens, but I think they'll catch on with an assist from the show? WDYT??

I like the mini shelf, especially behind the sink in front of a big window. Statement slabs are too gaudy for my taste. I'd be cautious with sage green cabinets. The sage green makes a kitchen look institutional: it's the same green they used in prisons and asylums, schools and hospitals. Maybe it's generational, but I can't do that green, even though green is my favorite color.

I definitely think it depends on the shade of green used and how you style it (like the AD mag ones)- could feel timeless and fresh 💚

Your videos are lovely! Question- Are we saying that skirting over kitchen countertop is back? I mean I have seen so many videos/photos where backsplash goes all the way down and touches the counter (especially when people use Quartz as both counter and backsplash). Planning for a kitchen remodel and hence confusion.
@JulieKhuu

They are two totally different looks Ashima. If you ALREADY have a tiny 4-6” backsplash, adding another material on top of that would be a fabulous upgrade. If you’re starting from scratch, you may run the countertop slab up the backsplash or opt to mix two-toned materials. The choice is yours and stunning either way 😍

@@JulieKhuu Thank you Julie. Starting from scratch and going for a two toned look. Will run my countertop 10 cm up over backsplash.

I'm late to the game here, but I absolutely love the idea of a water station. I never would have thought of that. Love the little ledges as well. Not fond of the range hoods with tile; they look bulky and (IMO) ugly. The open shelving on the bottom made me laugh. Of all the places to put open shelves -- right where the dogs will drag everything out, the dirt will collect, and the cats will sleep (not to mention knocking everything over). I'll stick with bottom drawers LOL.

You lost me a 2:09 with two words: "Show kitchens". My kitchen is not for show. It is for serious cooking. It must function properly. Green may be the 'in' colour this year, but like any trend there is a limited shelf life. I can remember when blue was the trend. White was a trend, as was red. I don't know about other people, but I prefer the timelessness of wood. In the kitchen, the First KISS Rule applies. "Keep It Simple, Stupid". Many of the designer kitchen used as examples follow the Second KISS Rule. "Keep I Stupid, Simple" is not good for a working kitchen.

When I re did our kitchen 2 years ago i did a slab backsplash in the same quartz as the countertop. Now I’m wanting the slab ledge. I cannot think of anyway to add that, oh well, I love the slab backsplash though, so easy to clean 😊

The pot filler at dogs' feeding station sounds good on paper, but I don't think it's very practical on the long run. First, it's a LOT of money to get that installed. Second, it prevents you from ever moving the feeding station to somewhere else in the house. Thirdly, what happens when your dog dies ? It's sad to think about, but it's eventually going to happen within a range of 10-15 years. You'll be left with a sad, useless pot filler that's going to look out of place if it's not in use, considering how low it is placed. You'll be left with two options : get a new dog asap, even though you may not be ready to move on from your past dog's death; or have the pot filler removed, which will yet again be more money to invest into completely redoing that area.
@JulieKhuu

You can simply create a cabinet with a door to hide the dog filler station if you no longer need it. It will look like the rest of your kitchen cabinets. Way to kill the dream Charles! 😂

Hello Thanks à lot for this great video ! My question is about wood grain direction for wooden cabinets in the kitchen : should it be vertical or horizontal? which one is more modern ? Does the vertical direction make the cabinets look taller ? In my case I will use natural Oak for cabinets with black granite Angola countertop ! I have mainly lower cabinets and few upper cabinets !

Super interesting. Love the open shelves beneath the counter top. ❤ At least a few under the island. The dog thing is a good idea .. I mean more than the pot filler. You have to do dog bowls every day. And you still have to drag the big pot to the sink anyway. I never got that feature. 🤷🏻♀️

Want you to know before I checked out your beautiful videos, and I mean off the charts gorgeous, I was taking a peek and a local Kitchen Remodeling contractor gallery. Unfortunately for the local, he is not in your ballpark or league. Although the pictures both his and yours show kitchens, there is a complete lack of classic timeless beauty and depth of design contrast and ingenuity in the local ones, very sad. 😮💨

The water-filling station will look dated in 6 months. It just looks like an expensive gadget to install. We're lucky enough to have drinkable water in our homes already. Just use the sink, that's what they're for.
