Here is my top interview tip for communicating your competence and securing a great interview. If you're asked about having a skill, tell a story, don't just make a statement. No matter how trustworthy you sound replying "yes I have good time management skills" in an interview... It's more compelling to communicate with an example. In this super quick video, I give two short examples of stories used to illustrate skills that I have. Stories can be used for demonstrating transferable skills (time management, working under pressure, communication skills, presentation skills) or specific skills (using that modelling software, cash handling, driving a forklift). Any skill the interview calls for, say it with a story.
A few years back I had a wonderful meeting with a careers advice service. They seeded this little nugget in my mind, to tell a story using the STAR method (situation, task, action, result). Here's the first example I used in the video:
Situation (when I was an undergrad working in a research lab)
Task (I had to organise my experiments around my classes)
Action (I made a planner and kept it organised)
Result (I passed both classes and labs)
This technique is good, I find it most beneficial to plan three or four scenarios before hand, and then adapt them to the specific question that is being asked. My brain doesn't facilitate working through an acronym while I'm mid-interview. So this is my solution! An easy bit of last minute interview preparation. Hope you can use this method to any interview, be that a job interview, a college interview, a university interview. In person, a phone interview, a virtual skype or zoom interview. Heck, even a first date! Interview preparation will take a few minutes, write down your stories or phone a friend to chat them through. This interview hack is ideal for any interview where you're asked about a skill, or why you would suit the role. No experience required if you can show your transferable skills and show you're a great fit for the job! You don't need to say "yes" sincerely, you need to show "yes" with your story. You've got this. Good luck!
