Extraordinary work on reviewing lightweight down jackets, the only thing i'd miss is the inclution of the Marmot Quasar Jacket, but I know is not listed on the site, so I understand. Thanks for all the great work on your videos, by far best outdoor clothing channel on KZitem.

What is the upper "limit" for weight of a mid-layer down jacket? As in, what weight should I avoid while shopping?

I got a Mountain Hardware Nitrous Down Jacket and although it's not really ultralight, to get a 850 Q-shield down jacket for under $100 is a steal in my opinion. Is it the weight, or why did you leave it out?

I bought lightweight down jacket at UNIQLO for US$30 on sale recently. Compared to Montbell lightweight jacket I bought 3 years ago, it is not warm enough.

Just wondering. Can one wear a light down jacket when hiking? Not a lot of exertion, or should they only be used when stopped?? Thanks

It's not ideal. You lose some insulation as your pack and belt will compress the jacket. And over time your perspiration will get to the down, lowering the insulation further (though high end jackets have water repellent coating). Washing becomes necessary often and it's rather troublesome. Down jackets really are best for downtime and rest breaks.

Was the Patagonia Down Sweater tested for this video? I see that jacket all over the mountain towns; they practically issue them to the people. I really like the clean lines of the Patagonia designs and their products just fit me perfectly.

How is the down harvested for these products? ive seen some vids where the geese are plucked alive 5 or 6 times a year and sometimes so violently that their skin is torn open. Just wondering where it comes from thats all.

I bought a down jacket at Costco for $25 on sale... it is 800 goose down very warm and had all the features of my friends Patagonia... I know some of you want to laugh... but don't until you compare it to your down jacket... what's your thoughts on Mammut brand and down/synthetic blend???

RedWhite&Blue 78 recently l bought the rime pro mammut jacket, it looks good so far but I'll have to wait until winter to use it and have a complete idea of how it works. One feature I disliked is that sizes come too snug, if you intend this to be used with underlayers I really advise to pay attention to the sizing matter. Going one size up its recommended. Cheers.

Odds are it was live-plucked down. That's how these can be made so inexpensively, and it's hard to know that's even what happened when you're shopping, but the low price is a tell. 80% of down comes from China, and much of that is live-plucked which is a very cruel process indeed.

Actually all those jackets are economy designs. Take a close look at the thermal pics. All the heat is lost through the stitches. Thermally best jackets are box stitched, like a sleeping bag, never sewn through. Even thickness throughout. Never in the jackets is the thickness less than about a inch. Hence, the current best jackets for value are synthetic which are one continuous sheet of insulation at a reasonable price or a pricy box stitched down jacket.

Lancelot, I totally agree with you on your point of view of the problems of the current down jacket. I happened to have observed the same problems years ago, and developed a patent-pending process to make a continuous web of down composite. In the near future, one will have a choice to wear a down containing jacket without the ugly tile-looking and un-even insulation. Of course there will be a continuous down-containing comforter without those heat-escaping stitches. The heat insulation value of this product is over 2.0 CLO/cm exceeding just about any natural or synthetic fibrous insulation. Any one interested in this technology can reach me at victorjlin2000@gmail.com.

Victor Lin It is more attitude than technology. Mountain Hardwear, Mammut, Marmot just love the cheap construction + premium price. They make their sleeping bags with box stitching, they have the technology. A combination of ignorant consumers and savvy business men. Box stitched down jackets exist. No one buys them because no one knows of their value. I say let the consumers be ripped off. Stupid people should have their money taken away, it is only Darwinism.
