Hey guys, sorry to hear that the upgrade was a bust. But, through it all , you guys are still living the dream together as a team. It was easy to see that this took the wind out of your sails, no pun intended, and money out of your pockets with no reward. Alejo, you’re a good man to take on such a project, but you have the support of an awesome lady who is by your side through all the ups and downs. Thanks for sharing this video ( I’m sure there was more cursing) take care of each other. ❤️

Make you a bypass connection for emergencies. Like run power wires from your generator to your inverter bypassing the batteries and solar in case your system fails, you just will have to run your generator to power your complete boat. This shouldn't cost much, just some wires and a couple breakers. Wouldn't want to see you out in the middle of a passage without power. Good luck guys and nice channel.

Im still trying to undertand what the bms system you were trying to install had that the one that came with batteries didnt have?? Im so sorry you had to go thru all that, que cosas! we live in a fully off grid home in isla mujeres Mexico and i can really appreciate your need for power from your batteries. My husband Ariel says that always there will be a variación in the voltage from the cells due to different factors, its nothing to worry about also that lithium batreies función well up to 60 c, max, not to worry about high temps, i have a new found appreciation for our batteries that we purchased from China their built in bms system gives all the readings that we need. In the future when you go to change your new lithium batteries you may want to buy batteries that have a bms with display that shows you all you want to see, built in already, A for effort and feel free to contact us if you have a problem with your battieres, my husband says he didnt think you needed to change the lg chem battery, that the problema occured when you disconnected the lg chem for too long which caused the batteries to discharge completely and what you needed to do was wake up the battery with 48 volt charging system or something equivalent like 48 volt battery. this can happen to you new batteries as well any lithium battery maybe he can help, we love you guys take care Sandra

It worked, that's what matters, make do with what you got. .... glad it all worked out in the end ..... thx for sharing ...... and as always .. never stop dreaming, just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans .....

Kudo to you both for sharing your failures as well as successes. I am very familiar with Lifepo4 batteries and still dont understand what you were trying to accomplish. If you’re looking to monitor each of the batteries individually I would check the BMS that they came with to see if you can plug-in a Bluetooth module.

In reply to the earlier thought about the inverter; Well a typical Solar MPPT controller sends energy directly into the batteries via DC electricity. I don't know what model the SMA MPPT is that would be helpful. However typically you can replace most MPPT controllers with something similar for not much money. If I were a betting man I would say that chances are that your SMA MPPT converts solar to DC, but you would have to check that out. If it does convert to AC instead of DC yes it should be replaced, but it would be a pretty rare case if it were AC conversion. That is typical in grid tie systems for houses and the sort. Where they sell electricity directly back to the power company in the form of AC power. However I get the feeling a lot of the SMA stuff is exactly for houses. A Victron Multiplus or Quatro has some benefits. It offers additional boost power from the batteries if a genset or shore power can't start things like Air Conditioning. This helps a weak electrical source keep a large boat running. Also the Victron units have stuff in them that lessen chances for Galvanic corrosion. Which means that your underwater metals will last longer. Also the Victron provides clean power which mean in the long run your refrigerators and electronics on AC will last a lot longer. Motors run hot on a standard inverter, and laptop power supplies and other devices burn up if on standard sine wave. You should 100% change your inverter/charger if it is not a pure or true sine wave inverter. It only takes one fridge replacement to make that obvious. If you can get me the SMA MPPT controllers model number I will look up the manual and do some of the leg work for you, but a lot of MPPT controllers that will do the job can be had for $75-$225 dollars depending on how your solar is wired and total capacity/voltages. However it is more than likely you wouldn't have to replace the MPPT controller. The Victron inverter/chargers are typically around $1200ish depending on the model/capacity/voltage, so that would likely be your only expense unless the existing wires wouldn't reach.

Hi Allyn, this is great information thank you! yea I think the SMA inverter and MPPT controller we have are for a grid system of a house since everything is AC it only changes to DC to charge the batteries. Since our inverter is connected directly to the 220V grid of the boat i guess is more efficient to leave it like this because it doest have to convert from DC to AC to power the outlets and other 22V things. either way thanks for the info. 🤙🏻😊
@allynonderdonk7577

@@LivingHakuna Well typically it does convert from dc to ac unless it only powers the outlets during the day.

I went back and looked at your electrical tour. It looks like you have a SMA Sunny Island Inverter Charger. It isn't a pure/true sine wave inverter if it is a Sunny Island. Guess what you can get 30-50% more power out of your batteries just by changing to a pure/true sine wave inverter. They are more efficient and the things with motors don't work as hard. So it would be like buying another battery pack or two. Victron Quatro is a good replacement and is user programmable. Also not having a true/pure sine wave inverter means it will slowly kill your electronics.
@LivingHakuna
3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Allyn this is super interesting! yes we have the sunny island but if we replace it for a victron then we have to replace the MPPT controller also since its a SMA mppt that is AC instead of DC correct me if i'm wrong.

It is easier to just put in a Victron Battery Monitor and maybe a Victron inverter/charger, rather than changing a BMS. It is likely that your older charger/inverter doesn't have the capabilities that a Victron does. Canbus can cause a person headaches. Just let the batteries balance and monitor what comes in and out of them. In fact if your inverter/charger isn't pure or true sine wave you can automatically get like 30% to 50% more power out of your batteries by changing it to a Victron unit. Modified sine wave isn't as efficient as pure sine wave or true sine wave. Fridges and things use more power on a modified or standard sine wave inverter.

Have to fully agree much easier not mixing brands of equipment, The mastervolt system you will need the software to configure the system even though i do have all the information to program the system still need the software which is not easily obtained for non commercial users unlike the Victron units. Also as far i know it is not a good idea to change just one cell (bad) on a battery bank
