I've been a carpenter (like @vancouvercarpenter) most of my adult life and a union carpenter for over 20 of those years. The company I work for ALWAYS orders USG Lightweight mud for EVERYTHING...and the painters that follow us say that our tapers are 100% top notch. I am not a fulltime taper, but that sounds like a really GREAT testimonial to the product quality.

No not really I’m not saying he can’t do the work. Because he clearly can. But he is giving horrible advice First but limited to A bucket of topping mud is absolutely the mud to use and the cost of which is less then $20 ( more like $15) and he is worried about using the rest of the bucket. Are you kidding me!!!! The cost of $20 in material to use the correct product for a procedure is minuscule and if your a pro and you don’t do enough topcoat ( like every single project) to use a bucket of topping is absurd 😅

Hey broski, how often do you find poc marks after skimming over painted walls or ceilings and how do you get rid of them? BTW, great stuff 👍
@stephentucker5406
11 ай бұрын
That’s because your not priming the walls first Not to mention plus 3 ( lite weight mud) is notorious for pancake air popping. USG recommends dish soap. But use just a tablespoon or so. Not much at all

@@stephentucker5406 You're telling me, that if I have a wall painted with latex paint and it needs skim coating for a new texture and I prime it first, there won't be any pocs in it?
@stephentucker5406
11 ай бұрын
@@aaronron2122 no. But absolutely helps. On several levels. I always prime first 1) you want the substrate to be sound as possible. When you prime anything that is a little loose will pop or lift. Get rid of these and re prime ( those spots) 2) patch all the deep holes first ( if there are any) and then prime agin those spots. 3) when your skimming out the entire surface you want the mud to apply and dry as even as possible. “ hot” spots have a tendency to peak off later. And don’t freak out. It’s very common when skimming to get bubbles and lifting of the substrate. This is a moisture thing. The primer help with that. 4) when you sand use a VERY bright light perpendicular to the surface and you will see every imperfection. If you see it then you will see it after paint. If you want it to look great. Use a product by USG called “ first coat”. ( it’s made by others also). It’s a gypsum based product use this to prime first and then before your paint and the gypsum of the compound will bite better. You will have to go to a paint store or drywall yard. The big box stores don’t carry it I’ve been doing this business for 45 years now. This is not the only way. But it’s the right way. And nothing worse then spending all the time to patch it and then when you paint it it still looks like crap. I know. I’ve seen it 1000 time when DIY try and they just don’t get the results

Topping mud is best for any texture. Plus 3 is too soft so when you bump the wall the paint and texture scrapes off too easily. I had to make a few repairs before I learned this.

Taping mud shrinks too much and gets more bubbles. Topping mud is technically optimal because it sands the easiest and gets the least amount of bubbles but it has less adhesion and also scratches the easiest.

Bad, bad advice!! I’m sure he has skills as a craftsman but like most taper’s. I know ( hundreds upon hundreds) they have no real clue on what material is what and what to use it for. BTW. I’ve been in the business for 45 years now. I started when we still did a lot of real plaster work. And remember when plus3 came out. And there was still asbestos in the mud.
