I bought a Rem 700 classic in 35 Whelen in 1988. What a revelation! I had been reloading and shooting a 7mm Rem Mag, 25-06's and a 375 H&H Mag. The Whelen did every thing any of those could do out to 300 yards, and as you pointed out, didn't damage nearly as much meat. The elk and deer I took with the Whelen all just went limp when hit in the chest cavity. Great cartridge.

Own 3 35 whelen rifles. The calibre is an Absolute hammer. Have taken many big bull moose, elk, and deer with them. They are always dead before their knees buckle. Straight down instant dead. Recoil? Nothing of concern... like 30-06. Really like 225 gr nosler accubond, 250 gr corelokt, on moose and elk, and have taken dozens of whitetails and 2 black bears with other rounds such as 200 gr hornady superformance interlochs, federal fusions, and 200gr corelokt. Just bought box of 200gr barnes ttsx, which i am REALLY looking forward to using. Im a barnes guy for my 270, 130gr ttsx, and its taken many moose, deer and a few elk. The 200gr barnes in the whelen should be something to behold! It is perplexing to read comments where guys confuse 35 whelen with 35 remington... asking if whelen is enuff gun. Its because they havent been exposed to it or read enuff i suppose. Trust me, it is all the gun most will ever need. 35 whelen is perhaps the one and done rifle for all NA big game. Practical common sense distances... out to 350 with ZERO issues...400 with practice and EXPERIENCE of course. It flat out drops the anvil on anything you shoot, with equally deadly performance on less than ideal hits. It just works. Mass, penetration and instant impact shock from the big 35 calibre bullet. Can only Truly be appreciated once you kill with it. My lineup: Ruger m77, bushnell elite 4500 2.5-10×40 my long range gun... big swamp, cuts, etc. Remington 7600, bushnell elite 1-4×25 (great moose combo, whitetail treestand use.) Remington 7600, williams peep rear/firesite fibre optic front. Great walking/stalking combo. All guns sighted in to 3" high at 100 yds, so i can hold dead on out to 300 and never worry. And, there are lots of great ammo combos out there now, easily found at most gunshops. My hunting partner just bought the cva scout stainless in 35 whelen, and put the bushnell elite 1-4x 25 scope on it. Very slick gun, anxiously awaiting deer season!!

At ranges I hunt now It is about perfect out to 175, and legal in Ohio, which I live on the boarder of. Like having souped up 45-70 in factory loading that can and will shoot spitzer bullets, and extend range. It is stunning on deer and anything else on this continent, and then some. That rifle cost less than a new Winchester Model 70, and it was built to my specifications. The 450 Marlin takes knock down to a new level indeed. Happy hunting and shooting to all, and please be safe out there.

Sorry I just ran into this. But in this day and age the 35's make a very good choice for hunting all game in north America up to I would say 400 yards with the 35 Whelen. The 35's are the 35 Remington ,358 Winchester and the 35 Whelen. These cartridges can be loaded from squirrel to big bears , Elk and Moose by using pistol bullets from say the Hornady 158gr XTP to 300gr bullets in both jacketed and cast bullets and they tend to be very accurate and easy to load for. So as mentioned you can purchase loaded rounds during normal times but also one can cast there own of many weights so you will not be out of ammo when needed for anything. I remember when they came out with the 338 Federal I laughed my head off lol. Sorry I could go on a long rant but the younger hunters and shooters really need to look at these wonderful cartridges.

The .358 Winchester could use more velocity; and out of shorter barrels the velocities begin to concern me even more. Interestingly the 200 grain projectiles produce nearly the same velocities as the 185 grain bullets out of my 16 1/2 barrel. I would prefer a .35 Whelen for the extra case capacity to drive heavier bullets. That being said, I’ve harvested quite a few whitetails with the .358 Winchester; and the Whelen wouldn’t have changed the results. The .35s seem to be inherently accurate. Mine cloverleafs 250 grain round noses at 100 yards off of the bench; and I’ve read of others reporting similar results. I think a Sauer 202 in either caliber would have made ideal game guns if they had ever been produced.

This is not a Diatribe, as i have been guilty of the same thing. I like your content, as i love the big boars to. However we have a habit of moving our hands so fast that the person watching cannot see the round you are holding, The rounds could be put down on the table and compared and not waved around, for a better view. Keep up your good work, i am a fan.

I have owned and hunted using the 8 mm Rem mag in Alaska. It stomps the crap out of the meanest of big animals, but it has to be loaded with the Barns TSX bullets because lead core bullet just blows up from the extreme power of the 8 mm Rem mag. I am going to do an 8 mm RUM on a Winchester Model 70 action which I have already changed the magazine box and the follower to the one that takes the 300 RUM cartridges.

I live in Wide Open Wyoming and in my whole life of hunting Big Game I've never had to take a shot longer than 100 yards!!! Long shots are not common, even in wide open spaces!!!
@bustabass9025
Жыл бұрын
The operative phrase here is, "...live in... Wyoming..." Living where you hunt is an instant advantage. It affords you greater opportunity to scout frequently, pattern game, gain year-round familiarity with their habits, the environment, boundaries, etc. When their habitat is your backyard, you should be able to ultimately put yourself in optimal position, to take an animal well inside of 100 yards. Conversely, for someone like me who doesn't, "...live in...Wyoming..." the likelihood of having to take a much longer shot, in order to fill a tag that I paid hundreds of dollars more for than you did, is obviously greater; for lack of the same reasoning. Magnum caliber rifles bridge that gap to some extent. Thanks to the work of Roy Weatherby, P.O. Ackley, John Nosler, and others, it's possible for nonresidents and other recreational hunters to take shots that you don't have to. The rifles and cartridges available today in both magnum and non-magnum chamberings, have indeed stretched the envelope and leveled the playing field for successful and ethical hunting experiences for everyone.

Bigger bullets are better for big game ,, especially when that 248 pound ten point white tail is just barely on your side of the property line and the adjacent land owner doesn’t want you to get on his side recovering a deer ,, a small 100 pound deer ,,you would be fine with a 6.5 creedmoor, but when at the edge of a river bluff or property you can’t get on just buy yourself a real gun ,,ha ha ha , one with big bullets.

That's exactly why I shoot a 9.3x62 Mauser, absolutely piss pounds elk, and no dis-gruntled adjacent property owners is the win-win for me. Since the Californys have invaded Idaho, it's time to rethink things a little. Bordering properties you used to have permission, or at least the understanding of the landowner will now get you arrested for trespassing. 9.3x 62 all the way!
