Not sure if it's been posted but a heads-up the reason that it only comes with 4 GB of memory is because Microsoft licenses windows in a light thin client version which requires a maximum of 4 GB of RAM. When you license Windows this way as an oem your costs are incredibly minuscule which attributes to such a low cost for retail. The difference between 4GB of RAM and 8GB it's not just a ram cost it's also another $60 or more for windows pro

@@jacobnunya808 I own a managed service provider and we are a Microsoft partner with access to internal licensing documentation and pricing as well as the ability to procure that licensing. The licensing can be cheaper if purchased in bulk (tens of thousands ) but generally speaking the starting price is $50 for a thin client license.

it's not sponsored. Sponsored means the video has to pass vetting from the vendor AND there is money for the sponsorship. The items reviewed are rarely if ever worth anywhere near the price of an actual sponsorship. He puts "sponsored" to give people like you peace of mind

We never let vendors look at videos or articles before they go online. All of our ad sales are currently through third parties so we do not have that function at STH

@@Mike_Hartman Google does not define anything, even the rules they use to demonetize or ban videos are extremely vague. Sponsorships are full advertisements where the video is paid for by the marketing budget and the marketing team gives you talking points to say and has to approve the video before you publish it. A sponsored video is A LOT more expensive than just sending a couple devices, you can't live off reselling whatever they give you

That PN42 looks like a good candidate for a firewall running pfSense or OPNsense. Especially with that dual 2.5 GbE NIC config. Although, I couldn't find any information on the NIC chipset(s). That information would be nice to know.

All I can find is the standard nic is Intel. Not sure about the optional nic, and no clue still what specific chipset it is.

You mentioned installing Linux on the Chromebox and said that you don't expect many people to do that, and that the hardware might be underutilized on ChromeOS. Did you happen to try enabling the Linux VM built into ChromeOS, and the performance there?

I'd really love the option for a barebones PN42, no storage, no RAM, no Windows licence. I hate paying for stuff I am not going to use. Well, I will use storage and RAM, but I have extra NVMe drives laying around here and I would go out and buy the amount of RAM I need (8/16GB). I could buy multiple and run home lab Kubernetes on them.

I thought exactly the same when I bought my current laptop. It came with a single 8GB DDR4-2666 module and it was a big hassle to resell it after I had bought two 8GB DDR4-3200 modules. I wish the manufacturer didn't include any memory and just reduced the price.

For this price the ROI for the energy savings are just not there, especially when also considering the overall performance and lack of flexibility its only good if you have a cooling problem or small space limitation such as inside a closet/cupboard or energy limit such as being battery operated.

The size,power usage and usb ports count is good. It's not a router even if some would take anything to replace their own, for that case lack of 2 more 2.5gb ports for a count of 4. At 1000$ no but 300$ yeah,not bad because of the size of mobo,making one with ITX is not the same,more power. Who would want to play anyway on that size of heatsinks with an i7,i9? ITX reasons for that. Good video

If the Chromebox 5 is guaranteed ten years of support, as per recent news etc, that does make it more attractive. Future Windows whatever probably won't run on a decade old machine.

CPU wise it is plenty. Generally I prefer Intel NICs for a router/firewall, but it has plenty of COU performance to push 2.5GbE

The outside I can still hold since there is the plastic shell. Also, it is only using 12W and that includes power for RAM, SSD, WiFi and so forth.

Chromebox, aka e-waste. DDR4 on a single channel current gen. and 4GB in a day when 64GB is only 85$? What a fail. And I love the benchmark scores. the 8 core version of the N series rocks these things. They should have that as an option.

Which model uses Realtek NICs? I was looking at the whitepaper for the PN42 and it says it uses Intel NICs but it doesn't say which chipset. I can assume it might be i225 or i226 but I can't find any information that confirms that.

Isn't the Beelink EQ12 Pro i3-N305 a better option for pfSense or other open-source firewalls because it has 2.5g ethernet ports. Using a dongle for ethernet in Unix branch systems is reported by many experts as unreliable just like Realtek nics? @ServeTheHome

I prefer a well known quality Taiwanese company like Asus vs a CCP data collection company like Beelink. The Chinese mini PC's have been found to have spyware/bloatware.
