Apparently Torgo was supposed to be a satyr in the beginning, then they decided it would be too silly, but kept the "satyr legs" prop, just modified it and covered with pants. The actor was high as a kite on lsd during the whole filming, that's why he shakes and behaves like that. So Goat boy would be oddly fitting as an inspiration

@Eisenwulf666

I think at the time (and this is assuming that the plot made any sense btw) with less ways for rapid communication (phones were kinda rare and telegrams were costly and you had to go to a post office to send one) it was kind of common for a person to "disappear" for a couple of weeks, maybe months. You just didn't hear from them, until you did. Also, young women running away with their fiancé to get married or give birth to a child born out of wedlock in some remote hospital, was a thing. It happened frequently enough that people were used to it. So a young woman disappearing wasn't a priority. Three women in the same area in a short time, that would be reason for concern actually (I presume), but the sheriff is clearly incompetent so..

Really busy gas station out in the middle of nowhere. lol What is with Bela Lugosi stealing all these women in whatever movie he's in? Is that written into his contract? Wait..was it Bela Lugosi who shot the sheriff? I haven't seen him shoot the deputy yet.
@Eisenwulf666
3 жыл бұрын
I think it had something to do with him having a "foreign" accent, so naturally he wanted to steal all the beautiful North American women.. It's a very deep seated fear in most cultures. King Kong kidnaps a woman, the foreigner kidnaps a woman, in later years aliens wanted "our" women. Soviets will come and, you guessed it, immediately go after the women. It's the easiest way to write a thriller movie or a fantasy tale for example(the evil wizard wants the beautiful princess, our hero the humble commoner will save her and so on..) BTW the hero of this movie is a guy that works in the media in L..A., while the bad guys are a foreigner and hillbillies that practice "voodoo". It's modern city folk(the target audience) against superstitious country hicks. It could not be more stereotypical XD.

This plot is remarkably similar to " the bride vanishes". And basically most other movies Lugosi was in. A pity really, he was a unique actor with actual talent. This movie is silly, even dumb at times, but the visuals are interesting to say the least. The riff is top notch too

@@razoleg I don't know...sure in his later years when he was a washed up junkie doing whatever role he could to buy the next fix, he wasn't great. But in the 30s 40s he gave some great perfomances. They weren't very subtle maybe, but he was typecast into the " weird foreigner" role, it's like complaining about Peter Lorrie's voice or Vincent Price's poshness. It is what it is
