We undertook the Old Siam food tour with A Chef's Tour, guided by the spirited and knowledgeable Fon. Old Siam, with its rich history and deep connection to Bangkok, offers a fascinating glimpse into the city's culinary heritage. We started our journey from the Old Town and made our way to the New Town, experiencing a delightful ferry ride followed by a tuk-tuk journey.
Our first stop was at the Khao Niao Ping Stall, a beloved breakfast spot that has been serving delicious food for over 30 years. We picked up Khao Niao Ping, a Thai sweet snack made by wrapping taro paste-stuffed sticky rice in a banana leaf and grilling it over embers. This convenient and filling dish was the perfect start to our day.
Next, we visited Siriwan, a restaurant recognized with a green bowl, the Thai equivalent of the Michelin guide, indicating a must-try spot. Here, we tried Hoi Tod, a crispy omelette-like dish made of mixed flour batter and eggs, served over a bed of stir-fried bean sprouts and topped with stir-fried mussels. We also enjoyed Pad Thai, rice noodles stir-fried with tofu, dried shrimp, onion, salt, and sugar, served with an omelette.
Our journey continued to LarbuBon Thewet 3, where we indulged in Som Tum Moo Tok Krok, a Thai-style raw papaya salad made with salted eggs, barbecued pork meat, tomatoes, green chilies, lemon, peanuts, beans, garlic, and more. We also tried Larb Pla Duk, a salad-like dish prepared with grilled catfish mince, toasted rice powder, onion, ginger, green chilies, fish sauce, and sugar. Additionally, we savored Pla Pao, a salt-coated and pandan leaves-stuffed charcoal-grilled tilapia fish, which was incredibly flavorful.
At Ya Chaem’s Khanom Bueang Yuan Stall, we enjoyed Khanom Bueang Yuan, a thin and crispy mung bean crepe stuffed with a mixture of grated coconut, palm sugar, coriander leaves, black pepper, kaffir lime leaves, bean sprouts, and tofu. This dish was a delightful blend of textures and flavors.
We then visited Varee Original Coffee for a refreshing Thai Milk Tea, a sweet and creamy beverage made with tea decoction and condensed milk. It was a perfect way to re-energize during our tour.
Our next stop was Rattana Thai Curry Rice, where we tried three types of curries: Gaeng Kiew Wan Kai, a light green-colored Thai chicken curry prepared with basil, kaffir lime, coconut milk, green chilies, and a few spices; Gaeng Penang, a rich and flavorful Thai-style pork curry made with coconut milk, peanuts, fennel seeds, and more; and Gaeng Massaman, a rich and mildly sweet chicken curry prepared with onions, peanuts, coconut milk, and a few Indian spices. Each curry offered a unique and delightful taste experience.
Our final stop was Khanom Mae Kwa Dessert, where we sampled a variety of traditional Thai desserts. We tried Foi Thong, a Thai dessert made of egg yolk and sugar syrup that looks like bright yellow strands; Med Khanoon, egg yolk-coated mung beans, coconut milk, and sugar-based balls cooked in boiling sugar syrup; Khanom Mor Keang, a flan-like dessert made of ground peanuts, coconut milk, eggs, and deep-fried shallots; Khanom Chan, a jelly-like multi-layered Thai dessert made of tapioca flour, coconut milk, sugar, and pandan leaves; Khanom Tuay, a sweet and salty double-layered pudding made of coconut milk, rice powder, sugar, and salt; and Khanom Krok, small-sized pancakes made of rice flour, coconut milk, sugar, and salt, crisp on the outside and creamy in the middle.
Throughout the tour, Fon's enthusiasm and knowledge enriched our experience, making this exploration of Old Siam's vibrant food culture an unforgettable adventure. Each dish we tried highlighted the rich culinary traditions and innovative spirit of Thai cuisine, making this tour a true feast for the senses.
