I'm overwintering a few pepper plants because I have only 90 days frost free 😭 hopefully they survive the last a couple months of what seems to be never-ending winter! The mature plants will hopefully start producing lots of fruit really early once they get outside. I've read that's peppers can live for at least a few years so it may be worth it for some with a shorter growing season. Plus it's fun having a garden space inside 😊 🌱💕

You guys are great. I have a cute little ornamental that I overwinter indoors (in Chicago)because it flowers and creates fruit almost 12 months of the year. But this year I got into the heat. Grew Ghost, Trinidad Scorpions, and Reaper. It was very hot and sunny all summer and the yield was crazy high. I've shared them with daring souls, made some great sauce, pickled some, and still have lots in the freezer. The Reaper production was insane. Btw, one day I went outside and saw a Reaper pod with tooth marks on it. Some squirrel must have gotten a real surprise from biting into that thing! Keep up the good work.

I finally grew some NuMex Big Jim peppers this year and I think they will be a standard for me too. Very easy to grow, vigorous plants, no troubles with disease or pests, and the fruit has a lovely sweet flavor with just a nice warm heat. And the yield per plant is really remarkable.

@@PepperGeek you'll like it if you're going for low to mild heat. Apparently Big Jim is one of the most popular varieties among commercial growers, and I can see why. I'm growing red Reapers for the first time this year, and find it to be the slowest growing, lowest-percentage of germination rate, compared with my other peppers. I've experienced the hotter the variety, the harder they are to grow, except with Scorpions. Maybe I just need practice. I moved nearly 3000 miles from where I'm from, perhaps I need to better adjust growing style with different climate. I have family near Melbourne AU, how do you like living there!? It seems it would be great pepper growing climate, no? I'm now in Kentucky, U.S., moved from Oregon, U.S., never been to good ol' Australia, but would love to visit! Good luck on your purple Reapers, let me know how they do/did! (Oh yeah, our summers are your winters, which explains why you were trying to germinate 7 months ago!)

How do I make a recommendation to someone who's grown them all!? This year I'm growing Thai BirdsEye peppers (very easy and prolific with a decent bit of heat and unique type of roof of mouth/nasal burn, my least spicy). Next up the Scoville scale are my yellow Scotch Bonnets (basic habanero heat, supposedly fruitier, sweeter flavor adored by the Jamaicans- I've only tried them in a hotsause and loved it, can't wait to try them 'unadulterated'! So far they're winning the 'race' as far as growth, they seem to be as easy as my Thais!). Next up the Scovilles- Red Savina Habaneros (one of my favorites! Real good throat-punch, chest burning, lip-inflaming, endorphin pumpin' happy li'l ball of fire, without being too insane like the next one. I prefer the fruity flavor of these over the orange habaneros, these tend to be bigger too!) My final variety for this year is the red Carolina Reaper. (Ed Curry is a psycho, knows how to torture any masochistic eater with agonizing stomache-wrenching pain and flames of hell licking up every orifice of the body. Even the ears hurt and a heck of a brain-burn! The flavor and smell are very nice cherry-like and very potent, but you won't be enjoying that for long if you're a 'normal' human! A heck of an endorphin-hit, I was laughing uncontrollably for like 45minutes, and whole body went numb all-day after the 'peak'! Above my tolerance level, I prefer to put these in food instead of straight!). I suffer from fibromyalgia and other debilitating conditions, the pain-killing endorphin-surging capsaicin is the reason I love these sassy little glowing coals of fire! I tried to grow seeds from frozen store-bought Vietnamese Birds Eye peppers (must've been deep frozen, no germination). The peppers from store seemed to be quite a bit hotter than Thai Birds-Eye (and I grow mine HOT!), seemingly habanero hot, but with the Birds Eye flavor, slightly larger than Thais too. I didn't grow them this year, but I love the scorpion peppers I've grown in the past. Not a big fan of the red Ghost peppers, though (terrible yield, and unremarkable flavor, irritating 'itchy' type of heat).

Those two are very different on flavor. Charapita is much more floral, while sugar rush is more flat sweetness. If you plan to make sauce or anything that requires volume, I'd use a larger pod than the charapita. They're good for snacking or single use in cooking, but not very practical for preserving, etc. Scotch bonnet is a great middle ground for heat and flavor similar to the charapita but with larger pods.

That Brazilian starfish is one of the worst tasting chile's known to man, no good for anything, regardless of how prolific they are. Defo growing the sugar rush next season. I grew about 30 varieties most of which I haven't grown before and 1 of the main stand out chile's for me was the aji verde, not a particularly hot Chile but man it has some crazy pineapple smell/flavour, really Fruity and by far the best Chile I've found so far for chilli jam. The Mexican hot also made a really tangy almost orange coloured Chile powder. Those aji amarillo you had in this vid are all really small compared to mine, mine were more like 6 to 8 inches, but I didn't get very many unfortunately, they seemed to take forever to ripen, although here in the UK we had zero spring and only half a summer if that, which I'm sure didn't help. 3 months to go and we can start popping seeds again, whoop whoop!!!

It is honestly amazing how tall my regular reaper is. I have everything in Lowes buckets so that gives them a bit of height already, but the thing is taller than me and I'm 5′9! I'll have to try the purple one next year. Such a pretty plant.

I stopped growing jalepenos and replaced them w/ Amarillo. Better flavor, better production, and overall more satisfying to grow.

I love the peppers, but the time to ripen is veeery long. Maybe next year we’ll try one in a container to see if we can get better production/quicker harvests

@@PepperGeek Interesting, I was getting fruit by July, same as my jalapenos...but the Amarillo's were HUGE plants. I grow most everything in 7 gallon fabric pots now, inc. tomatoes. Cheers!

Love the video as always guys. I’m getting a few different verigated verities next year, some besides the fish, and I found a few mutant types I ordered I’m really pumped for. The ones with really small odd looking leaves…and about 5 types of bubblegum because I love the colors .. keep it safe … much love from kc.

Nice! Where'd you get the mutants? Forgotten Heirlooms? I think Mattspeppers.com will be up soon and we'll be getting a few from him

Trinidad seasoning pepper (aka pimento). Smells hot but almost no heat , small size but adds great taste when used in stews or sauces.

We did actually grow a plant this year but it did not produce well at all - super spicy though! The purple reaper seemed spicier to me still
