I use the same system, but I learned it with a cow hitch through your belay loop and clove hitch on the carabiner. Clove hitch so it doesn't fall out unnoticed when taking it out of the harness. The other knots are same as yours, I clip my reverso in the second knot :)

I do this with an aramid/tubular sling but instead of girth hitching I tie it through with a bowline on a bite. Just looks neater and is not going to tighten on to my harness and belay loop uncomfortably.

I have heard knots in slings weaken the sling up to 60% would that be true in this case?
@summitseekersexperience
Жыл бұрын
Yes… the strength would go from 24 kN to about 12-14 kn
@caedmonswanson2378
Жыл бұрын
True but in this case you’ll never have a 12kn load on that sling as you’re just hanging from in (1kn max). Just make sure you don’t climb above the anchor and fall, shock loading it!
@perplexedon9834
10 ай бұрын
@@caedmonswanson2378even a factor 1 fall onto a static loop can generate over 10kn, so it is incredible important to not climb up to even waist height with a sling.
@caedmonswanson2378

@perplexedon9834 yes, but if you look at real world tests where people actually climb up and shock load, you rarely go above 7 kn. Still don't do it, but a small fall won't be too bad.

thats why I use the best, petzl dual connect adjust. its very fast! very easy to use! not accidentally clip in wrong and potentially fall. adjust to absolutly any length for great comfort! adjust slack out of your system in seconds while still connected! Setup rappel in a breeze!

Last year a guide showed me his preferred PAS for rappel with extension, etc. Similar sling, but with a overhand on a bite in the middle to form a small loop. Clip the belay device on the loop for belay extension. Clip the end of the sling to the anchor. Hollowblock clips to biner on harness belay loop for third-hand. When the belay device is set and ready to go, unclip the top biner from the anchor and rap.
@summitseekersexperience
Жыл бұрын
Yep, I’ve used that one as well, but prefer this one as you get a little more reach on the PAS which helps for slabby rap routes.

Alpine Butterfly instead of overhand on a bight is also nice solution. For your PAS on the way down. Climbing up just clove hitch the main rope. Less clutter and less fall factor potential

Nice one. That's pretty much what I do, with a dyneema sling, however I'm wary that (contrary to what the name may suggest!) this makes for a totally non dynamic PAS.. Would you say nylon is a good option in that sense?
@summitseekersexperience
Жыл бұрын
Nylon and Dyneema have similar static properties so from that perspective I wouldn’t change. I personally like nylon for this application as it does not weaken as much with an overhand and also less likely to cut if you forget and girth to your belay loop (not good for Dyneema)

Not the poster, but this method is simpler to build than a Purcell Prusik and much cheaper than a PAS (~$40) or Petzl Connect Adjust (~$50)

I’ve been doing this with a Dyneema sling girthed to my belay loop. You mentioned in another comment that this has a risk of cutting. Can you explain that? Thanks!!

Dyneema isn't as cut resistant or abrasion resistant as nylon and is thinner as well.
@ricardocabeza6006

If you girth it to your belay loop, and never look at it again... You can eventually wear through your belay look due to friction over time. There are stories of this happening. But the root of the issue is lack of gear inspection prior to use. There will be noticeable wear to the belay loop from this, before it ever fails.
