I found Mathematics through studying philosophy in college. Formal Logic led me to B. Russell and Wittgenstein, and that led me into number theory and the philosophy of math. Now I am trying to self-study math so I can understand college-level physics. I believe major scientific discoveries of the last century have affected the field of philosophy tremendously, especially ontology and epistemology.

@@ELDAAstronaut A great start is B. Russell's Philosophy of Math. There is another great beginner friendly book by a mathematician named R. Hersh "But what is math really?". Plato and Kant have discussed the nature of numbers with questions such as: Is math invented or discovered? Are numbers real? Does knowledge from math come from empirical evidence or intuition? Very interesting stuff!

Meditations is a great great book. Only caveat, you should not read it whole in one reading, since Marcus is sometimes repetitive. You should read fragments, a few pages, every once in a while.
@andres6868
3 ай бұрын
by the way, that he can be repetitive is not a criticism. Historians believed Marcus did not intend this book to be published, it was more like a personal diary or notebook where he wrote his thoughts.

Personally, I think there is a big difference in "pop" philosophy and what is generally discussed in academic philosophy today. they are both relevant reads though! but for more "pop" philosophy (like meditations) I think "letters from seneca" are more accessible. for something closer to what academics discuss, "the problems of Philosophy" by Bertrand Russell is an excellent starting point. (introduction to mathematical philosophy is a fun one that math sourcerer would probably enjoy having in his collection, if he doesn't already)
@konradfletcher6311

Careful not to put modern analytic philosophy on a pedestal above all other fields - I'm guilty of this too, sometimes. To my knowledge, academics absolutely still discuss stoicism in more modern forms, and marcus aurelius is a genuine philosopher, not just a pop philosopher. But yeah problems of philosophy, for all Russel's faults, is probably still the best intro to philosophy.

I think the best beginner text is the platonic Alchebiades I and then as many of plato's dialogues as you are excited about. It's important to learn platonic dialectic reading - where you read in conversation with the text in a way where you can think beyond the text: Try really formulating your concerns with Socrates or whoever's views in your mind before continuing the text and see if he adresses your concerns and if this is an appropriate answer.

A big part of my personality and mindset was shaped by this book. I read it for the first time when I was 15, looking for some guidance on how to be a better human being(for myself and society). At 15, this book helped me identify and eliminate what was harmful for my personal development, motivated me to become a better student(Im the equivalent of a "2.0 gpa" student in my country) and showed me that I can actually accomplish many things in life. From 17-20, it gave me strength and the right mindset to stay focused on my pursue of a very high-level job, which I managed to land after 3 years of hard work and sacrifice

Very nice to see you talking about a philosophy book. And you started greatly. Anyway so many things I would like to tell you. First please don't skeep the first pages those are the foundation when Marcus thanks all human beings that make what he is possible. That's the Thanksgiving. I don't know to say that in English sorry. Anyway you don't need to read it in one go or even fall the order but keep in mind that he was a very thoughtful man and if it is there it's important. Second it was a kind of diary he kept so he kept his best thoughts as a remembrance. Well don't want to bother you. Love your videos. Btw Parricide: the one that kills his one father. One of the worsted crimes in the Roman world. Or any world for that matter.

Nietzsche is by far my favorite philosopher. I would recomment "Beyond Good and Evil" to anyone who is interested. It is similar to "Meditations" in a sense that it is very information-dense and there are a lot of aphorisms and quotable parts, and you can read just a bit from any place of the book and get something useful and something to think about.
@MrAmadeus1998

I myself and many others have found Nietzsche quite hard to hard to read. He’s really all over the place and while he has interest points and ideas it often comes off as unstructured ramblings. I suggest people build up to Nietzsche or read it incredibly slowly.

@markcorrigan3930 I don't know what philosophy is. However, I also don't know why Meditations is a terrible book for the average person who wants to think about what the good life for them is. This is maybe what I think philosophy is: the study of doubting everything to create robust wisdom. It can range from e.g. studying the good life on an academic level to studying life for the average person. So, what do you think it is?

I would definitely be interested in a video about the philosophy of math, its such neglected topic even though it gave rise to our modern analytic philosophy of today. I remember reading an intro to philosophy of math by Linnebo, and realizing how much more difficult this subject is in comparison to most philosophical texts.
