Fantastic video. Thank you! I have the Hypertherm 30 air and it’s fantastic. On 220v I’ve cut 5/8” mild steel and 1/2” SS with no problem whatsoever. I’ve also used it for washing out welds on bucket repairs. I highly recommend this machine to anyone who doesn’t have a compressor or doesn’t want to chase air hoses around.

I bought the Hobart 12ci because I don’t have the power to drive both a compressor and and a stand alone plasma cutter. I am a meta artist and mostly work with metal 1/4” thick and less. As far as duty cycle goes, I can run this plasma cutter constantly in sub freezing weather. In the warm summer months, it’s best to run late at night or predawn early morning hours. Point being duty cycle is temperature dependent

I have a Hobart 12ci and plan to plumb it for external air supply. Will install bypass air plumbing and internal compressor power cut off. Hoping that improves the output by eliminating the amp draw of the compressor. Also I will have better control of the air quality(dryness) as I fabricated an intercooler between my compressor and tank. With a much bigger water separator unit. Wish me luck 😄

Video is outdated. A lot of Chinese plasma cutter out there with built in air compressor that is capable of serious cuts. The compressor only draws like 5 amps on a 220 circuit, so it's insignificant in the grand scheme of thing when the plasma itself draws like 35 amps or more. They're useful for confined space though, because a compressor that can supply a plasma cutter can be a bit large. However if you do hook up an external air supply it does increase their cutting performance a bit.

The Hypertherm Powermax 30Air is not as powerful as the Powermax 30XP. Directly from the manufacturer's website, the Powermax 30XP outputs up to 30 amps at 125 volts. The 30Air outputs 30 amps at 83 volts. That is about 2/3 of the power of the 30XP, since power equals current times voltage. The 30 Air uses a special torch with special consumables to run from a reduced output and air volume while still maintaining similar performance to the 30XP. In the real world, the 30XP will cut a bit thicker and faster than the 30Air, but not enormously so. The difference is about 3/4" in mild steel for the 30XP and about 5/8" for the 30Air. For the average user in a home, the 30Air is more than sufficient. As mentioned in the video, for portable professional use, a lot has to be said for not having to lug around a heavy compressor capable of 5 to 6 cfm and finding a second dedicated line to run it. For the occasional thick cut, there is always a sawzall or a hacksaw. If one has to think about making long cuts in large thick plates of metal, the type which would negate a Powermax 30Air, one will already have a large air compressor to run the plasma cutter and the comparison is moot. For those who must have that extra little bit of power and capacity, and want a compressor for other uses anyway, a Hypertherm Powermax 30XP is a great little plasma cutter, and so is the Miller Spectrum 625 Extreme.

Considering how cheap you can buy air compressors now days. I would not concider this as an option.

What if just the compressor dies? 2:54 Who needs one with a built in compressor? Someone who sucks but doesn't blow.
