I think the "Bug Out" name really comes from the idea that Ounces are pounds. It's the kind of knife that you can throw in your pack and not worry about weight or performance as a backup/camp/ food prep knife. It's a no brainier type item for most 'preppers' I just wish it was a different color.

Aaron I have a request. I have loved knives all my life and the function and looks are what sold me. I had absolutely no knowledge of steels. Just recently started to become a little informed through yours and other reviewers. Because of your recommendation I have ordered a Gerber Strongarm and anxiously awaiting it's arrival. My question is this: could you do a video or post a download listing the knife steels by name from good to bad and their qualities . We newbies need to know when looking for a knife if it's a good steel, will hold and edge, ease of sharpening, durable and such. I have seen this same request on other channels but it didn't happen. Thank you and God Bless. Luke

No offense, but one second you say you’re tired of paying more than about $25 for AUS8 and 8CR13MOV and prefer to pay just a little more for D2 and 14C28N and then the next second you say you like the $70-80 AUS8 Crossbones?
@gideonstactical
6 жыл бұрын
Gents and Joes No offense taken, the point that I’m saying is that companies need to step it up. That doesn’t mean the current designs aren’t the industry standard with those lower and steels. As I said in original review of the crossbones you’re paying for the design more than the materials.
@WifeMadeThaStew
6 жыл бұрын
gideonstactical I completely agree that the companies need to step it up. I like to see potential customers and reviewers call out knife makers for using sub-par steels and materials. For example I really like the new Kershaw Emersons, but I haven’t picked one up because I feel they could have used D2 or 14C28N and charged maybe $10 more.
@1968gadgetyo
6 жыл бұрын
Gents and Joes. I think same profile blade with D2, 1CN24N or even the 9CRMov ( a china 440C) will cost more than $10. . Some Chinese made knife like Real Steel do cost around $50 for 14C28N. But they are bland looking. If you throw in American or Italian design, will will pushed in the the $60 to $100 price range. For that price, you might as well bring the manufacture back to US. The Kershaw Blur would be a good example. If the Blur was to be made in China, my guess that it would be $60, just for the 'Kershaw' brand on the blade. The question is will people pay that amount for a American design blade with a mid range steel, made in China, Taiwan or even India at that price? I do confess I do get blades using my heart, instead of my head and wallet.

'Tis the season for knives! I look forward to your, "Best of [...]" every year. Such fun videos. These past years, I haven't been much into folders, I just carried around my Leatherman Sidekick. But this year, I wanted to try out some actual folders. So I picked up the Spyderco Delica 4 and the Kershaw Leek. So those would be my picks for "Best Folding Knives of 2017." Especially the Leek. I carry that thing everyday except for Monday and Wednesday (the days I'm at school.) Those are the days I carry my Delica 4. The Delica has under a 3' blade, making it legal to carry anywhere, including a collage campus. I know the Leek is popular, but I don't think it's popular *enough*. I believe you did a video on it quite some time ago, but I'd recomemd taking another peek at it (assuming you got rid of it.) Anyway, great video, as always, and I look forward to your "Best Fixed Blades of 2017"!

@Epotheros
6 жыл бұрын
You can open carry knives longer than 3.5" in Colorado, just not conceal carry them. In Denver though you can't carry any knife longer than 3.5", so just make sure to check local laws too. I also heard in Denver a double edged knife can only be 1.75" long, because they count both edges as the total length.
@banditgriot
6 жыл бұрын
Take a look at the laws in Boulder County. You might be surprised how they differ from state laws. The state law isn't very clear on open versus conceal carry of hunting knives over 3.5 inches. A mix of ambiguous language and Home Rule city/county policy make carrying anything over 3.5 inches risky, unless you are actively hunting or fishing. It is ironic that I can conceal carry a handgun, where I can't carry a knife.

This year there was a lot of great knife designs out , and I bought a few , but I just can't take the 8cr13mov , the aus8 , and the 440c steel anymore. I mean if Ontario , Steel Will , and Real Steel all can do it , whats wrong with everyone else ? Iam not a steel snob , but if I can get 14c28n or D2 for $35 - $40 dollars , why would I even look at a 8cr Chinese crap steel knife. In 2018 , these companies better step up their game, because they won't be getting my money and I know their is a lot of people out there who feel the same way. So if they won't up- grade their steels on their own , we the knife community can make them do it , by not buying knives from them, I know I won't be ... How about you ....

I really enjoy watching your videos but your going to have to learn more about hardening and tempering blade steels. D2 Can be a very good blade steel but it depends on the hardening process. Compare Ganzo D2 to Benchmade D2. Benchmade blows the Ganzo away in edge retention. 8cr13 mov vs. 8cr14 mov should have the same toughness but the 8cr14mov should have better stain resistance. 8cr14mov vs. 14c28N . 8cr14mov should have a better edge retention but the 14c28N should have better stain resistance, both very close steels. Now Kershaw/ZT seem to always have low edge retention and lower RC on their steels. This allows the blades to be sharpened easily but does allow the blade steels to preform to their maximum potential. Samremu owns Real Steel and built the plant to make folders with locks and flippers for foreign sales. Real Steel manufactures knives for Ruike. I give credit to Spyderco for teaching Sanrenmu the proper way to harden steel for the knives they have produced for them. Sal is big on fit and finish, that as well I'm sure influenced Sanrenmu/Real Steel. Now when you get into custom knives using these steels, they can be even out preform the blades produced by large manufacturers.

The way Kershaw heat treats their 8cr13mov is garbage compared to spyderco. From personal use and from a few videos I seen Spydercos 8cr whoops Kershaw. I don't know if it's the hardness or they get a better version of it since 8cr is more of a standard for steel than a mark of steel like s30v. I just never been impressed by Kershaws heat treat after they screwed up 13c26 on the Junkyard dog by going with 55-57 hrc when it's a steel that performs best at 60-62 hrc. And then their Elmax on ZTs was under cooked for a long time, at least it's better now.

Fair enough, maybe it's that you are one of the few mainstream gear reviewers bringing attention to Steelwill and I have unreasonably mistaken that for an unjustified bias. One parallel I would draw is Nutnfancy's love for Keltec products. I think that Keltec and Steelwill are both high value producers, however I do not feel that they stand up to other excellent brands in their respective industries. Looking back at the video though I see that it is about the best pocket knives that you have reviewed, not just in general so maybe my point is moot
