Excellent comparison! I didn't know the Behringer XM8500 or the Earthworks Ethos. They are great. The Behringer seems like the best value for the price. I've been working with audio for over 25 years, I'll leave a list with the ones that seemed to have better sound quality, with a fuller sound. Starting from the cheapest to the most expensive: 1. Behringer XM8500 2. sE V7 3. Rode NT-USB+ 4. Shure MV7 5. Shure SM7B 6. Earthworks Ethos 7. EV RE20 To use in podcast I would take into account the advantage of models with USB. It is very practical to be able to record on the smartphone. In addition, some models can have excellent effects that can be applied via the application. In this line of USB microphones, the last tip is the excellent launch of the Rode NT1 5Th Generation. Thank you and congratulations for the great video. A hug from Brazil!

Thank you! I appreciate your kind words and I have to agree that the new NT1 5th gen is pretty awesome! I just got one and haven't had a chance to fully test it out for different purposes yet, but so far really liking the sound and USB comes in very handy for a quick recording. Thanks again!

Kind of funny. The Ethos sounds like the condenser version of the SM7b. The Lauten sounds like the condenser version of the RE20.

incredible. I wanted to buy the mv7 because it handles high pitched voices (mostly female) way better than 80% of all mics. Now i found the XM8500 because a streamer friend is using this with the M-Audio M-Track Solo interface and it sounds AMAZING. It sounds for me EXACTLY like the mv7 in every headphone i had and i'm so happy.I will buy this definitely. I had my whole life the hyperx quadcast and the sennheiser profile. They are both more expensive than the xm8500 + interface. And it sounds way more clear and natural and great for high voice. Especially for screaming into the mic haha

Among these, I have the RE20, LS-208, Ethos and SM7B. To my ears, I think the RE20 sounds the best. The LS-208 just doesn't work for me, I use it for music. However, more times than not, you'll see me with the SM7B because of how clean it looks on camera.

The SM7B is always on a boom at my desk for the same reason, kind of like old reliable because I know it will always get a result that works for whatever I'm doing!

Just in terms of sound and not looks, have you tried playing around with the switches on the LS208? I love the 50hz and 10khz switch. It makes it more manageable for voice over work for some voices. It really takes processing well with them enabled. It becomes a more RE20-ish sound but with the detail that comes with a condensor.

@@annekedebruyn7797 yeahs, if i have to be honest, i prefer the sound of RE20, if i'm using the LS-208 i'll use it on the flat mode

Hey! I am getting into posting sports pods on my channel and stumbled across your channel, great review! I wanted to ask though, what is your audio interface and what program do you use to record the audio? I have a SM7B and Motu ultrlite mk5 interface but still struggling to find that ultra crisp clean audio like you have in this video. Thanks!
@semiprotech
Жыл бұрын
Hi! The Ultralite mk5 is an awesome interface, I have one myself and love it. The audio for the video was recorded with a Sound Devices MixPre 6 II. The MixPre has great preamps but I wouldn't say they're significantly better than the mk5, at least not in terms of an appreciable difference. The audio samples for each mic in the video don't have any post processing applied other than being normalized to -16 LUFS and a limiter to prevent clipping. But if I'm recording with the SM7B I usually use some EQ and compression to get the best results. It will vary by voice, but I think about a -2db cut around 450Hz and a slight 1-2db high shelf starting around 8kHz brings out a nice tone in the SM7B for spoken word.

@@semiprotech Hey! Thanks for the quick reply. Can you clarify what this means "normalized to -16 LUFS" I am new to audio editing / equalizing. Thanks! I have been playing around on the Cuemix 5 and adding some touch ups, seeing some good positive changes already.
@semiprotech

Sure! Normalization refers to the loudness level of the audio - it's something you do in post after recording. Platforms for audio and video have loudness standards to help ensure a consistent experience for the viewer/listener. I believe both KZitem and Spotify have the same standard of -14 LUFS (loudness units full scale). Personally I think my audio starts to sound not so great when you push it up to -14, so I normalize my audio for KZitem and my podcasts to -16 instead. You can achieve your designed loudness a few different ways, such as using maximizing/limiting plugins (like Waves L2), or simply by using a loudness normalization tool/feature in your DAW. Limiters are usually used as part of raising/normalizing your level because your highest peaks can clip as you raise the overall level. Audacity has a super easy loudness normalization feature as well as a limiter that is very easy to apply to an audio file if you don't already work in another DAW.
