When oversampling is off, the harmonics that are changing with the input level are folded-back harmonics due to aliasing.

@@LanewoodStudios you can be sure by setting your project sample rate to 96khz or 192khz and leaving the oversampling option off.

A very close call. all 3 sound great. ..although I think the UAD has a very tiny edge in coming close to the original Pultec emulation - because the UAD sounds more transparent. The Gem EQP is very good also if you are looking for a little more color. Thanks for a wonderful video.

Wow when you moved from the hardware to Overloud on vocals I was really impressed, so close in tone and character , the Uad sounded thin, didn't really like it, thank you for the demo, I am getting the Overloud.

I wonder if the “non linear” behavior you noticed with the harmonic distortion is actually aliasing. Considering it stopped when utilizing over sampling, combined with the fact it did look to be moving right to left in Plugin Doctor . Idk? Though. I’d have to test it thoroughly myself. Maybe I’ll pick it up today and take a look.

Interesting idea! The way I understand it though is that by driving the input level you are supposed to get more saturation. So I would expect the level of the harmonics to increase even when oversampling is on. Let me know if you find out anything.

Both plugins sound flat and compressed compared to hardware. UAD code is very old by now and seemed to muffle the sound, it's better used on bass and kicks. The GEM sounds a bit clearer, maybe 20% improvement. Not really worth upgrading.

Imaging people listening spotify through a cellphone speaker saying.....I think that pultec sounds flat comparing to hardware....I´m gonna switch the song till the production sounds more analog. Just a joke..modern times.....quarantines, mandatory vaccines, flat earthers......and digital analog emulations.

@@marsrivers Have you used the Pultec hardware and compared with UAD? Putting the analogue vs digital emulation debate alongside those conspiracy theories is insane. I hear what you're saying about the UAD being a bit muffled but the GEM and the Warm are very close. 50/50 chance people could hear the difference in a blind test or in a mix.

Sounds nice, but I hate those skinomorphic interfaces. You barely almost see where it's set up. Simple is better
