Great Advice! We always had issues with clipping on the +20db boost with the manual setting set to 2-3 tics from the left. Our kids tend to be super loud in the videos and we didn't want them to quiet down. By changing the setting on the rode to 0 and adjusting the in camera setting to 25%, that completely solved the issue. Thanks again for this awesome advice!

Awesome! Yeah I work with young kids a lot. I've just decided to go with 0db on the mic and Auto on the camera in those settings. It was clipping even when I was doing 0db on the mic and 25% on the camera.

Thank you for the great video, Thom. Could any one help me out. I'm setting my Rode videomic pro plus at 20db with the camera audio in manual mode, low level, but the audio ends up very quiet. Hm, it's hard to say. I think I'd have to play around with your camera and mic to troubleshoot the problem. But as long as you have found a way to get normal levels, just go with that setting.

Having seen some of your videos, I Don't know why you only have so little subscribers. From my experience, I know Education is very difficult to gain the view numbers / subscribers even if you have good contents. But as I know, "How to" videos, and "reviews" are the most sought after videos, a catchy topic name with rhetorical question is always easy to gain view numbers. Casey is right, viewers are seeking for a relationship, not only for contents. Keep the good videos coming !

Problem with the 20DB method - you end up with a ton of reverb/echo sometimes so the voice doesn't sound natural. And you can't really do anything about it. At least on 0DB, you can easily cut out the hiss providing you don't turn the camera rec level up.
@gibsonedu
5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I only use 20DB in quiet settings these days. The hiss / echo is still better than the hiss you get from the in-camera amplifiers in my opinion (at least in a quiet room).

So for outdoor settings and walking around on noisy streets, do you still keep the mic at the bent line option? And then 0db and Auto Camera level? Also whenever I move the notch all the way to left, it doesn't record sound at all, even with the mic on and plugged in at +20.
@gibsonedu
7 жыл бұрын
Correct - outside on a noisy street you'd want a bent line option, 0db, and auto on camera. I don't think I've ever used the -10db option. When you're talking about moving the notch all the way to the left, I assume you mean the volume level on the camera? You'll need to bump it up at least 1 notch to get any volume. All the way to left means no volume.

hello and thanks for the tips! At the beginning I will point out that my English is not the best but I will try to describe what I mean. I often record handheld videos with an olympus camera and often in these films you can hear such a "rumble" bass sound of a "reflected" microphone. How to deal with this problem? 8 жыл бұрын
If you're going to be in an environment that has a lot of background noise, I would just set it at 0db and have your camera on Auto. If it's a quiet environment, then I would try the 25% on cam and 0db on mic. I use Adobe Audition but it isn't inexpensive. Audacity is free though and here's a tutorial on how to do some noise removal in there. kzitem.info/news/bejne/1XeAmoedZqCAaXY Hope that helps Bryant!

the most useful video I've watched so far on this, you made it so easy to understand!!! do you have any suggestions about settings to use for dialogue with the Rode Videomic with Rycote Lyre Mount? the step down from this one... I'm having some issues with echoey audio and hiss with this mic... this is the option I was given at my workplace so not really another option for me right now, even though I suggested the Videomic Pro due to the ability to change dB on the mic itself..
@gibsonedu
4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Elizabeth. The echoey audio comes more from WHERE you are filming. The hiss may be harder to get rid of without the dB boost. On my other 'how-to KZitem' channel, I've got a video that talks about how WHERE you record impacts what it sounds like. The video is using a phone but the principles still apply. kzitem.info/news/bejne/mK5r2qmecH2dn5g

Hey dude would really love to know which settings you'd use if you were to record an outdoor live acoustic session with an artist? There would be no audience we would be in a secluded outdoor space with possible background noise from birds/rustling etc... Thanks!
@gibsonedu
7 жыл бұрын
I would probably just go auto on the camera and 0db on the mic. With music, there's generally a dynamic shift between soft and loud parts, even with acoustic music so it'd be a bummer to have your audio clip on a loud part of not really pick much up on the soft parts.
@frankliang5633

Great video for setting it up! I got the Videomic pro 2 months ago. The background noise is captured so loud. I tried to use the HPF, but I found no difference when I turn it on or off. Really want to know if that's a problem or if it should be like that.
@gibsonedu
Жыл бұрын
The HPF won't do anything about the hiss. The hiss comes from the crappy audio amplifiers in your camera (most cameras have crappy audio amplifiers b/c that's not what a camera does best). That's why the +20db is so helpful. It uses the amplification in the microphone (which is higher quality) so you won't get as much hiss from the camera amplifiers because they won't have to work so hard.

Many other channels suggest to have the setting at +20dB and 4 or 5 notch from the left. Would that make much difference with 1 notch from the left in term of loudness? Or hissing sound?
@gibsonedu
4 жыл бұрын
I generally just try to use the amplifiers in the camera as little as possible as that's where most of the hiss comes from. +4 or +5 on the camera with the +20db on the mic seems like peaking would be likely.

Rode stereo mic pro is a low sound or hissing mic.Why it has been still produced?
@gibsonedu

Not sure. Try changing the battery. Or using the +20db on the mic with a lower audio level on the camera.

Not familiar w/ the a6500 but I'd try the same thing if you have the ability to bring the camera audio levels down when in manual mode.

Great info! Thanks! I have a question. I have a Canon T3i and Rode VideoMic Pro, and I was wondering if you'd use the same settings if you're using the VideoMic Pro as a hand held microphone. I'm going to shoot some interviews in a moderately noisy environment and I want to use the VideoMic as a hand-held mic and have it close to the subjects. Do you think the best settings for that would be to have the camera at 25% and the VideoMic at 0 dB? I want to make sure there's no clipping if the mic is close to people when they're talking.
@gibsonedu
7 жыл бұрын
Hey Bobby, if it's a moderately noisy environment, I'd just go with the mic at 0db and the camera on auto. I think you'll still get clipping with the camera at 25% in that context.

Some nice advice there my friend. I just bought a Canon T3i as my first DSLR and the Rode Pro mic just like you. It's mainly for my KZitem channel and general video work. This vid you made was really helpful. Peace dude! Big thumbs up. :)

I remember watching your video last year in prep for doing a school play, and I thought "boy, that makes perfect sense to set it 25% at 0db!!" and implemented that on my first night of shooting. This year comes around, and I fell back into my old ways of 2db at one notch on the camera... not catastrophic, but ya... wish I would have gone with 25 at 1. A word of wisdom for all you guys and gals getting into shooting school plays. The audio is SOOOO much fun to work with!!

I agree; audio is great (I have a Bachelors of Science in Audio Engineering). Glad this vid was helpful. I typically just keep the mic on 0db and camera on Auto now whenever I'm in any context outside of a quiet room.

Lovely video and great info! Planing to do some recording in the woods with this mic. It will be mostly sound from birds, there will be some high sounds as some birds may be closer to the mic than others etc. Would you recommend using high pass filter and +20db there? I'm doing the recordings early in the morning to hopefully avoid airplane noises and traffic from a distant road.
@gibsonedu
4 жыл бұрын
Hard to say. Maybe do a test run (5 min) in the morning and try AUTO on the camera and 0DB on the mic, and then another test with MANUAL on the camera (a notch or two from the left) and +20DB on the mic. Keep the high pass filter on no matter what since bird sounds are nowhere near the bottom of the soundscape so you'd just be taking out low rumbles that would be interfering with the birds anyways.

Hi Thom, I found your video extremely helpful, even after 6 years you posted it. I have subscribed your other youtube channel. For this one, I do have a question. When you said Quiet environments: +20db mic setting 1 notch from the left on mic level record settings Moderate to loud environments: 0db mic setting ≤ 25% mic level record settings Is the first notch on the left 0% mic level, 1 notch from the left is 25%? I am a bit confused because you begin with notch and then use percentage later. I just want to clarify. If yes, it means the mic level recording settings are the same for both, therefore the sound volume recorded in the moderate to loud environments at this setting will be lower. You have to increase the volume in post production. Will noise or hissing be amplified as well in post? Thanks a lot!
@gibsonedu
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Schen :) Since this video I sort of changed my practice; I pretty much only do the +20db on the mic w/ 1 notch from the left on the camera in a quiet environment. Every other environment I found it to be most effective to put the mic on 0db and the camera level on AUTO. But to answer your question, I'm not sure how many notches 25% would be, but it's basically just 1/4 of the way on the line on the camera level (or half way to the halfway point). Sorry I should have clarified that in the video. But you'd likely have to boost the volume in post-production a little bit and you'll bring a little bit of noise with it.

@@gibsonedu Thanks for the reply! I tested out on my camera. it turns out +20db on the mic, even in a quiet environment at home generated hissing sound. 0db is good. Also, my camera's mic setting for movies does not have notches. Instead I have a scale of 0 to 20 to choose from. Guess it really depends on camera. Mine is Nikon Z6. Thank you so much for sharing!

Hey Thom, video was great. Learned a lot. I've been trying to deal with that hissing for a month now. My set up is slightly different. I'm working with saramonic smart miser and an iPhone 6s+. I can't seem to configure it correctly to remove that sound. You have any thoughts on the Rode Mic Pro with a smartmixer from saramonic? Or just combined with an audio mixer all together. Thanks for your advise.
@gibsonedu
8 жыл бұрын
Hey Adrian. It all depends on what has the best pre-amplifiers (the mechanism boosting most of the audio levels coming in). The reason the hiss is gone when I do the +20db with my Rode is because the amplifiers inside the microphone are better than the amplifiers inside the camera. My bet is that most mixers will have pretty good pre-amplifiers so I would experiment. Try shooting with the Rode on 0db and then boost the levels through your smartmixer and see how it sounds. Then try shooting with the Rode on +20db and lower the levels on your smartmixer. Record the same thing on both tests and the listen to the results with headphones to really see which one you get less hiss with. Hope that helps :)

Thom Gibson Thanks. I'll try that and let you know. It's been a real experimental process because the smart mixer is good but it almost seem like it's an extra step for the audio in. However, the couple times I did get good audio, I'm not sure how the smart mixer added to the achievement. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.
