In response to how we need rugged phones: I ride motorcycles and I set up my phone attached on the handlebar for GPS navigation assistance and musical accompaniment with Bluetooth paired with a communicator on my helmet. Many of my weekend rides go for hours on end, in light to heavy rain and in sometimes dusty environments. Bad phone attachment would also make me drop my phone at low speed in rough road conditions due to vibrations shaking the phone loose off its clamps. Having a rugged phone would help out a lot in conditions like these. I broke one of my phones not during falls on rides though, but on just a sheer thigh-height drop in the office.

Some people that work outside have to worry about the temp for the phone. I had a phone that was in my back pocket while I grinded paint off before repainting. It started beeping and kept speeding up until it quit. I pulled the phone out of my pocket and nothing worked. When I had gotten home I put it on the charger and it didn't register. Another phone I had when I was cutting wood in 20 below temps just plain would not work until I had been in my PU for 1/2 hour, then it slowly lit up.

I drive equipment for a living and keeping a working phone has been a big expence for me. I am always breaking the screens by putting the phone in my pocket and then leaning up against the equipment to make repairs or adjustments. Then my last phone (less than 10 days old)was in my pocket when it rained real hard apparently getting it wet and destroying it. I am on my fifth phone in the last year and half. So it only makes sense to shop for a rugged water resistant phone. I think that it would be cheaper to pay more up front for something that is going to last longer I hope. Thanks for the information that was in your video.

Just to answer you question. I travel a lot. I've been traveling for the last 5 years so I move all the time. I'm living and working in different environments every couple of months. There's a beach, waterfall, river, multi-day mountain trek, hiking, boat trip, kayaking, etc every week, along with working different kinds of jobs. So my environment changes pretty often and unpredictable things happen daily. I lost 4 phones in the last year alone due to water or shock damage and that's why I'm looking for something resistant.

I've been looking into the rugged phones for when I am out on hikes and expeditions. I tend to be out in various terrains including sand, gully, swamp and just for days so the idea of a phone that can survive in the event something goes wrong is kinda appealing. So far I've been fairly careful with standard phones (Bold 2, s2, op3) with screen protectors and cases but who knows what can happen next time

Perhaps you should define "need such a phone" because look how many people manage to drop theirs down the toilet or in a puddle. A protective cover rarely helps with water. It isn't just construction workers that need a tougher phone. What about farm workers, engineers, people working with horses, those who have hobbies that take them away from the beaten track and would be in some danger without such a phone to summon help. No one knows when they will "need" one but surely better to have it and not need it than the other way round. That is why so many manufacturers are jumping on the bandwaggon and starting to produce them.

I would not mind one of these rugged phones long as they would come with more recent versions of Android 7.0 or 8.0 with guaranteed updates, 4GB of RAM, and 64GB of on board storage without breaking the bank. otherwise a rugged case on something like a Moto G 5 Plus is a better option as it's already splash proof with a gorilla glass screen, and currently runs Android 7.0.

If they could make one and if I needed one I'd prefer a rugged smartphone in a smaller package. I don't like having a massive screen and in fact, that's why I WISH Motorola would bring back the original Moto X 2013 design with just updated specs and make it a flagship of theirs, add a fingerprint reader where the dimple is in the back, and I'm good. 4.7 inches is already enough for me I don't need a phone that's half the size of my head and while my hands can seem large to some I have an issue reaching the top corners of my Pixel 2016 (just ordered the Pixel 2 for a test run since I have 15 days to return it post-purchase for a full refund) So IF I needed such a device, a rugged one that is, I'd prefer if the device's bulk was necessary was built around a smaller package overall. Sacrifice a larger screen for a smaller screen (keep the 1080p resolution since you CAN do that) and voila.
