What are your thoughts on Game Jolt? I learned about that site a while ago while looking at fangames based on Sonic.exe. I also uploaded my own game made for a tutorial on there, and to me, it looks similar to itch.io in that it carries both free and paid games for Win/Mac/Linux and browsers. GameJolt also has an option to enable ads for your game as well. I don't know how this works as I disabled that feature for my game.

Should i put it out there as a game on early acsess for the price of the game, or release a free demo, and then if people like it they can buy the full game when its finished? Im not sure which is the better deal.

Hello Ask Gamedev. I got some qustions and i need answers for them. So yea... As you can see i am from Poland and my English isnt in 100% best but still. I am learning to program in school and my class is using code::blocks to create programs. We got some lessons of using functions, loops etc. And there is my question. Should I start using more advanced programs like GMS and learn about it more (if yes please give me some advices where could i find any tutorials) or just going with class ? Next question. How much time takes learn to code simple 2D games? Next question. Should i be afraid about my graphic skills? I am not really good painter or anything. That all questions for now and yes i know some of questions maybe were touched and i am sorry if i waisted your time. (Or not who knows :) )...
@CouchFerretmakesGames
6 жыл бұрын
Hey, learning the basics of programming in class is really valuable, it will give you the opportunity to learn game engines easier and quicker. You should definitely continue to learn it in class. However, if you have the free time and energy for it you could start learning a game engine and making basic games in it. Just choose one that you like and stick with it, no matter if it is GMS, Unity or Unreal. You will have difficulties in the beginning because all of them uses different programming languages than the one you probably learned in class, but it won't be that hard. If you've already learned the basic concepts you've just mentioned like function, loops etc, doesn't matter if it's still kind of confusing or not, you are probably ready to make simple 2D games. You just need to learn the syntax of the programming language of your game engine of choice. If you understand the theory, then it shouldn't take long. KZitem is the best place to find tutorials about game engines, so everything you need is here just search for it, and maybe look for introductions or beginner videos about the game engine. Graphics skills is good to have, but it depends on your plans. If you want to publish games commercially, then you definitely need to have compelling graphics in your games. However there're a few options you can choose. First is find somebody (friend maybe), who are good at making art and pair up with him/her. The other one (I've chosen also), is to learn an easier style like pixel art, and try to be good at it. Pixel art is much easier than like cartoon or 3d art, but still can look compelling if you polish it enough. If you are just having fun making games, then graphics don't matter. :) PS: Don't be afraid of asking questions next time. And good luck! :)
@adamkiewiczjakub

@@CouchFerretmakesGames thank you for advices. So it looks like that. Ok. I just need to learn how engine works (probably i am gonna go with GMS tutorials). I know something about GMS but i cant still program on my own. I think i am gonna do 2D games couse i am not used to 3D games and concept of 2D is easier than 3D. When i learn more i am gonna touch 3D to. Btw. I mentioned about graphic skills. I totally forgot about my classmate who is really good in stuff like that. I should ask him for help with game graphics. Ah and one thing. I didnt want to spam so there is reason why i had wroten that end of comment.

I think the best place to put your game, starting off, is Steam. You don't want your game to be exclusively on Steam forever, but you should keep it only on Steam for about a month. People are more likely to buy your game if it's convenient for them, so once your game starts to get some traction, you should port it to other platforms, like GOG, itch.io, etcetera.

One advise I heard in a GDC Talk once is that you should try to get your game to as many platforms as possible. New Platforms are especially great, since they are not crowded (yet) and you might even get some money from the Store Team when doing a (time) exclusive deal

@UltimatePerfection

@Vin Diesel Sanji Blaming piracy for your failure is just an excuse. When your game doesn't sell, usually there is another reason other than piracy for it. It may be that your game is a glitchy, asset-flipping mess, it may be because it is priced wrong or it may be because it is not available on the stores people are using (RIP EGS exclusives).
