For me a big theme in this movie is realizing that some people (or Martians) simply do not like you, and never will, and you shouldn’t try too hard to understand it or make them like you.

This movie was amazing, it was a giant middle finger to Hollywood because it cost 100 million to make and all that happened in the story was the Martians kept fucking with us without ever giving us an answer why lol They killed all the A list actors off, including killing Jack Nicholson twice when WB said Tim Burton couldn't do that! the aliens had a simple goal of total conquest and elimination of earth's governments. It was never going to accept any sort of "treaty" despite what the movie's liberals wanted so desperately to believe, the hardass loud military guy was right about the aliens intention right from the beginning. Too bad it didn't help us though, our nukes were so easily defeated lmao.

When I was 3 years old... literally THREE, my parents would play this scene for me to scare me, to make me cry and have a panic attack. Then my older sister who was 7 would do things like, at Toys R Us she found a Mars attack toy and chased me around the store into the parking lot, or we were at blockbuster and she would find the vhs and chase me around the store. It caused extreme anxiety where I couldn’t sleep or be in the dark as a kid. Fairly certain I have actual trauma and anxiety from my entire family constantly showing me clips and terrorizing me with this movie when I was a toddler.

The soldiers were shooting at the UFO. It was established earlier in the movie that those things are bulletproof because at no point in the movie were any of the UFOs shot down. The only way they were eventually brought down was with that secret weapon.

Well actually it was. There is another bird killed by the "marsian lady" which attacked the president. I think it is a forshadowing of the point, that the masians are vulnerable by high notes, like a birdsong or some country music ;)

It was a good theory though. Since the mythology of the dove on Earth is connected with the planet Venus which traces out a pentagram in the Earth sky due to the Fibonacci ratio of the orbital resonance of the two planets. Mars and Venus on the other hand have a 3:1 orbital resonance so it doesn't trace that shape in the Martian sky and so it doesn't have the same mythology of beauty, love, etc.

How many of you have seen the sixties flick War of the Worlds? ( or was it 50s) I just recalled where they got that human being line from- it was first spoken by a migrant farm worker at the site of the pod crash in War of the Worlds- "maybe they no like the human being", so it was a nod to that, and most MSTies know that is also where they got the character Clayton Forrester from- he was the scientist with the huge glasses. He still had huge glasses in MST3K. God bless the original with Joel!

Yes, the 1953 film version of _War of the Worlds,_ considered to be the superior out of all the _WotW_ film adaptations of H.G. Wells' book, even superior to the 2005 film starring Tom Cruise and directed by Spielberg. This film *_WAS_* intended by Tim Burton to homage sci-fi B-movies from the 1950s like _WotW_ and _Earth vs. the Flying Saucers._

If you didn't catch the theme of this movie, it's that those who won't take responsibility and act on it are doomed to failure and punishment. Next tome you watch, take an account of who makes it through the story and how thoughtful and responsible they are/are becoming. Also it's amazing how much ebb and flow the perceived appropriateness of this scene has. Even IF congress is the branch of the US govt with the lowest consistent approval rating
