~ QUESTION FOR COSPLAYERS ~ What sealer do you use to seal your cosplay props and armour and why? Share with us here!

I use Plastidip because of its quick application (minus the dry time in-between each coat of course!) but it can be a pain with the PPE and odour it leaves till fully dry. I love the idea that Flexbond is safer particularly as I don't live alone! So I may just have to try it out myself! Thanks for another handy video!!

+MISS CHARLIE ART glad you found the video handy. I agree I have always found Plastidip to he fast and easy but the Flexbond didn't really take too long to apply either. The safety aspect was the winner with me.

I actually use both haha. Given that the weather's colder at the moment in Aus, I prefer Flexbond and I've had a lot of surface imperfections from Plastidip. (a point worth mentioning)
@AstrocyteCosplay

+Thanura Ravindra very good points also. Thankyou! I was thinking about that with the weather getting cooler here. I have only had one imperfection with plastidip so far and I believe it was too humid the day I sprayed.

do i need to seal it further with clear acrylic? I've made some foam hooves, that go on some shoes. they're gonna be low on the ground and probably skuff a lot?

Plastidip works when it wants too. I use flex bound from TNT cosplay on props and armor that will be moving around a lot. If I'm not worried about the armor or prop I'll use CA glue like school glue. With flex bond you don't have to wait 7 days to dry, a air dryer is all you need to speed up the process, then lay down another coat if you want to. When using flex bond use a foam brush you get less strokes that way. Plastdip I've found on some EVA foam it takes 2 to 4 coats to get it smooth enough to paint, I have also used flex bond an Plastidip together and got the same results.

Plastidip is about $6.00/can here in the US. Flexbond runs about $22/ liter US. The big kicker for me is time, in that the Flexbond fully cures in 7 Days, while the plastidip is four hours.
@AstrocyteCosplay

+Thomas Dye wow plastidip is cheap in the US! Even with the exchange rate it is still about 4 times more expensive in Australia. Really depends where you live too. The time is definitely a factor as well.

@@AstrocyteCosplay I think I’ll look into flexbond! I bought plastidip because that’s the most common one but i live in an apartment and it’s freezing most of the year where I live so I just don’t think it will be useful a lot of the time!

Question, does flex bond melt when it comes into contact with sweat and body heat. My Armor was primed with white glue and in the hot summer sun with me in it, swaet and heat started to melt the primer, with my paint over it. Plastidip does not seem to have this melting problem.
@AstrocyteCosplay

This is probably going to depend on where you live, how hot it gets and humidity. I personally haven't worn mine in extreme hot weather yet so I can't comment personally. It is a water based primer though so I would say it could have some similar issues. It does say it's fully cured in 7 days. I would imagine it's probably better than white glue but not as good as Plastidip for applications where you are going to get quite hot and sweaty.

I was searching for info on Flex Bond (for concrete) & found your vid. I almost choked on my Diet Coke when you said that you had to pay $30 for an 11 oz. can of Plasti Dip!🤯 I had to replay it to make sure I heard you correctly. Charging ya'll $30 per can is criminal!!! In the states, Amazon Prime has a 6 pk of 11 oz. spray cans for $34.92 ($48.87 AUD). That's $5.82 ($8.14 AUD) per can. Home improvement stores sell them for less than $7.00 per can, including tax; they cost about $1 less at discount stores like Walmart. I can see where import tax, regulations & shipping would cause a significant price increase but not to the tune of over $21. I think ya'll are being severely ripped off. That's some bulls**t!
@AstrocyteCosplay

Haha you made me laugh with the diet coke! But yes you guys get it pretty good over there with a lot of this stuff. You could imagine doing full cosplay armour or big props that a can doesn't last very long so gets expensive very quickly. This was why I was searching for something that was a little more cost effective here.

I have 2 questions could you apply Flexbond with an airbrush to provide a smoother finish? And if so, can you use Super77 to make it impervious to heat and moisture?
@AstrocyteCosplay
2 жыл бұрын
To be honest I don't know the answer to those questions. I haven't tried airbrushing Flexbond and would probably be a little concerned with it clogging and ruining the airbrush given it's an adhesive. Super77 I hadn't heard of either, not something that is readily available here in Australia. Maybe others in the community might have the answer. Both would probably require some testing so if you do test this idea please let us know how it goes.

@@AstrocyteCosplay I've not yet started to do cosplay building, nor worked with eva foam, trying to find out more before I get started. All of you in the cosplay industry have been really helpful with this, if I did try it though, I'd probably go with an hplv gun to apply it and use a thinner to clean the gun and hose, thanks, I really appreciate it, hopefully someone else may get to it before I do to let me know if I'm moving in the right direction with this 😁😁😁😁😁

Which one is better for flexing the foam without causing wrinkles?
@AstrocyteCosplay
2 жыл бұрын
They both wrinkle up the foam, probably about the same, however you can lightly heat up the foam and they will come out with both these products, unlike other primers such as white glue where the wrinkles remain.

I found a Flexbond Primer/Adhesive for Worbla. The fact that it is called an adhesive has me concerned. Are all Flexbonds also adhesives? Has anyone tried this type of Flexbond with good results?
@AstrocyteCosplay
3 жыл бұрын
I personally haven't used Worbla so can't really help with that and would be interested in other peoples experiences also. However I do believe that Flexbond is considered an adhesive similar to white glue but it's meant to dry not tacky and flexible unlike white glue. This is from the Rosco Flexbond details: Rosco FlexBond provides a flexible adhesive bond between many scenic materials, such as fabrics, plastics, foams and wood. Rosco FlexBond dries to a clear, hard, yet pliable coating that does not suffer from the "tackiness" common in many other flexible glues even after those glues have had days to dry. And unlike ordinary "white" glues which can crack and break when flexed, the adhesive bond of Rosco FlexBond remains extremely pliable and strong even as the materials bend and deform.

+James Carswell there are lots of different foams you can get and they can all be used for different purposes. I have used the Big W foam squares for the base of my Wonder Woman shield (cheap, strong and easy to get). The rolls of foam from Reject Shop but they are textured on one side so can be a bit annoying. The 5mm foam I used for my Wasp helmet and lots of other projects was from VFM Group (very reasonably priced). I have also bought some from Spotlight which is made for cosplay but haven't tried it out yet.

@Astrocyte Cosplay i might, i thought of doing it as a way to smooth+seal the foam before plasti dip.. does flexbond fill gaps/seams a little bit? Cus it seems plasti dip does not
@AstrocyteCosplay
Жыл бұрын
No flexbond won't really fill your gaps. To seal the foam I normally use a heat gun that closes up the pores in the foam. You can use something like Kwik seal (I use a variation of this that I can get in Australia) or even foam clay to seal the gaps and seams.
