As a physical therapist, people ask me what my favorite muscle is. My answer is always the same: the core! The "core" is a muscle group wrapping around the middle of your body like a corset, controlling the pelvis and spine. It consists of the transverse abdominus in the front, the deep back muscles like the multifidi, and the pelvic floor on the bottom providing support to your abdominal organs. Having a strong core is crucial for mobility, especially for older adults. In physical therapy we say, proximal stability allows lateral mobility. Having a strong core, allows you to move your extremities more freely. This video teaches you simple and effective core exercises which will help you improve your balance, promote better posture, and decrease pain with movement.
