As always great information. I must say though, recently I flew my Mavic Pro with -1 for sharpness and the results I got were beyond terrible. Shooting at 4K 24fps/50 shutter speed, all trees around me looked like they came from a really bad oil painting. You couldn’t see any leafs at all while the drone was moving. I did a few tests in regards to sharpness after finding another KZitem video talking about this issue. It seems to me that even 0 sharpness is a little blurry still, although way more acceptable than -1. The explanation on that video is that DJI adds noise reduction as sharpness level is lowered and creates this extremely soft image. I’m not sure if is true or not, but all I can say is that +1 has been the minimum sharpness setting that shows details on trees and grass. And while you mentioned one can add sharpness later on, if you have footage that doesn’t have details, no matter how much sharpness you try to add, you won’t get those details back.

It's Oct '24. I've been watching your videos since I bought my first Mavic Pro 7 years ago. Very informative and educational and I thank you. I've had one throw a prop and fall to earth destroying it utterly and the second Mavics' Controller Board recently failed with video transmission freeze. I'm expecting my third from eBay any day. However, no one in any Mavic Pro video I've seen has mentioned the right shoulder wheel. The left obviously adjusts the camera up and down but the right will adjust the EV or Exposure Value allowing more or less light into the lens. I fly mostly in Auto and this right wheel feature is a huge benefit. Try it today! Thanks again Ed

Sometimes, especially in darker conditions. I don't like the digital grainy sharpness of 0 Sharpness for the Mavic...I normally like the slightly softer look. -2 might be too much, but -1 might be a good compromise.

Slowly but surely managing to get through your extremely helpful videos. I wouldn't mind one on the Polar Pro app and how to use with filters. My first two days of flying, because I wanted to focus on the flying rather than the photography, I've waited until about midday to fly but have concluded this is a mistake because the winds have picked up around 9 / 10.00 in the morning and died down around 4 / 5 in the evening so I'm now going to seek to fly very early in the morning.

Another great video Ed! Look at those subscriber numbers growing, great job man! I've got a few questions after watching this one... Where did those color profiles come from in your DJI GO 4 app? I have the D-Cinelike, None, Mono, etc, but after that mine reads "Film A, Film B", all the way to "Film I"...yours has names with it, so I'm curious if there was an update you did somewhere? Second, anti-flicker (I know you didn't cover it in this one)...Mavic is showing those settings ghosted out on my app, when I should be able to switch to 60Hz for NTSC here in the US, correct? I bookmark your vids, so I'm sure I'll have a few more ?'s on this one after a few more plays :-)

@EdRickerVlogs

Hey, thanks for watching! Not sure where you live, but in the US the FAA regulates drones at night pretty heavily. Unless you have a waiver accepted by the FAA, you can't legally fly earlier than 30 minutes before sunrise or later than 30 minutes after sunset. The waiver process can take a while to get accepted, but if you don't have one you could get fined if someone sees your footage and investigates. That part is up to you though! With that said, the low light isn't that great, you're right. You'd have to add quite a bit to the ISO to get a bright enough image, but then of course you get the grain that may not be worth it to you.

Great videos. Thanks. I'd just like to mention in regard to your "style" settings on the Mavic. Unfortunately I've got one of the Mavics that suffers from the dreaded "watercolour" effect. Anything less than 0 or even +1 on sharpness and you get an unusable mush that looks like a watercolour painting. Especially in areas with high amount of detail (like trees). Lots of people are complaining about this issue and DJI's response seems to be living up to its reputation (i.e. none). Time will tell whether it gets a fix via firmware or if its a hardware problem.
@EdRickerVlogs
7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the perspective Gary. I definitely get the mush if it's a darker or cloudy situation, but I haven't had any "watercolor" issues when it's a brighter day and well exposed. I think it's just a characteristic of the camera on the drone...even though it's $1000, it's still a cheap drone by professional standards. I'm looking at the P4 Pro as my next upgrade.

hey thanks! Yes it does depend on time of day, weather, and location, but mainly I always have a -2 sharpness, 0 saturation 0 contrast. I usually use a manual white balance and always try to keep my ISO/shutter speed as low as possible.

Hey Ed, love the videos - they are right to the point. I experienced something weird the other day shooting with my Mavic Pro. Somehow the video setting changed to record as a .MOV file instead of a MP4. Total bands of flicker in the finished footage - unusable. Ed thank you for this very informative video. This will help me greatly in shooting landscape with this little bird, do you have any plans to release a video of different footage with not only the resolution and frame rate but have the detailed camera settings like you see on photos. IE: Shutter speed, f- stop, white balance, saturation etc..... for example on the shot of the pond (beautiful shot) I would like to know all of your exact detailed settings during the shot before post production. I would like these values as quick reference when shooting in the same environment, and then fine tune from there. Did you use your PolarPro filters during any of the shots you showcased in this video? Keep up the detailed work, I really enjoy your channel.
@EdRickerVlogs

Thanks for the comment! I'll try to include more of that info about each shot in the future, although I change things up so often that I usually forget unless I write it all down shot-for-shot. Stay tuned, hope to improve in that regard. Yes, the PolarPro filters were on for the water shots, but not for the shots where I was cycling through the different color looks while the drone was directed at me.

Hey Diego, thanks! That's difficult to determine for me personally. The FAA restricts us flyers in the USA from flying at night...we can technically only fly 30 minutes past sunset with appropriate drone lighting. There are waivers that we can apply for, but they take time to get approved...so I've never personally even tried yet haha! Perhaps I can apply for a waiver first and then figure out the settings once I'm able to. Thanks though!

Thanks anyway, and congratulations for your cool work on youtube. Other thing, And I had a terrible crash last saturday, but until now i'm not understanding what happened. I have already travel the drone to cancun, farm, city, already at 500m height. Not much experient - i imagine about 15-20time flights. But saturday, i was flying not high (15meters), and passing in the middle of two buildings with a lot of space (about 20 meters). When i was passing by, about 15m heigh, and 20 meters distance from me on the ground, i stopped to see the configuration of camera that i'll probably use, and without any commands, my mavic starts to fly to the left (without responding my commands to not go there) and crash against the wall. for my lucky, it didn't enter through some window and hurts someone. But I'm still thinking, what happened? Could happen again in some worst situation? (like above the sea or lake, or when it's miles away from me)...??? it broked one wing, and one propellers pair. But the rest i tested and seems ok. I'll send to a authorized store to change the back/left broken wing. Do you have some idea about it..??
@EdRickerVlogs
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Diego, sorry to hear that. It could be sudden wind sheer from the buildings that caused the Mavic to drift, and it could also be magnetic compass interference from the metal in the buildings. Either one could have caused that. Hope you can get it fixed and back in the sky soon!

I love the look of Blue color profile when I'm shooting sky and water, but otherwise I usually choose None for the Mavic. I used to drop the sharpness but since some firmware updates that isn't always a good idea. Sometimes a -1 on the Sharpness will work. Otherwise, usually 0-0-0 these days!

Hey Ed! I have be looking into the blurred trees with the lower sharpness and found that once sharpness is below +1 the in camera noise reduction turns on and that cause the blurred trees. In my personal test you get a more details with +1 sharpness but more noise. Some people recommend -1 or -2 sharpness and add sharpness in post, while others recommend +1 sharpness and soften with noise reductions in post. Whats your take on this?
@EdRickerVlogs
7 жыл бұрын
I don't know about camera noise reduction, but all I know is even 0 sharpness looks too sharp for me. I love the -2 (-1 if it's too blurry for the trees). That's interesting about the noise reduction though... I would prefer to add sharpness in post if needed, which would be less often.
@trinifires
7 жыл бұрын
I personally prefer how buildings, roads, etc. look at -1 sharpness but there are random trees that get really blurry and looks like mush. So I'm sort of undecided by which approach I prefer. I'm thinking I'll adjust sharpness depending on the subjects.

this is a known mavic issue. DJI admit that at anything below +1 on the sharpness setting, there is an inbuilt noise reduction feature which can kick in and it does exactly what you are seeing. It turns trees into watercolor paintings. Set it to +1 to be safe.

If you shoot anything lower than +1 sharpness in camera noise reduction is turned on and it blotches up the fottage. (ie totally ruins the video if you look closely) Definitely the better to put up with sharp video and add a blur to the fottage afterwards to compensate.

I've been shooting at 2.7K 24 FPS. Whenever I have my shutter speed at 50 my image is way to dark. I almost have to go up to 200 to get a light enough exposure. Thoughts on what I might be doing wrong there?

Thanks for watching! I don't think you're doing anything wrong, sounds like you're just shooting in a dark environment. With full-on sun, 1/50 shutter at 100 ISO without an ND filter is completely and utterly blown out. If you experience a dark image with no filter on a sunny day, it might be a some sort of condition unique to your particular drone. Who knows!

Could you create video for RTH on person(controller) location?

This will make your video very muddy. Sharpness isnt needed with water but is with other things

Would this work for a Mavic Air?

So shutter speed shouldn't be twice as high as iOS correct...sorry I'm a newbie to camera settings

Actually shutter speed should be twice as fast as the frame rate for the best filmic look. Any slower will add too much motion blur, and any faster won't have enough motion blur. So 1/60 for 30fps, and 1/50 (ideally 1/48) for 24fps, etc.

Hi Ed, I like your video. I was wondering if you know why I can not Move in Anti flicker to 60 HZ or auto it sis alwasy at 50HZ thanks sincerely jj

Could that be due to your framerate? 60hz may not work with 25fps. What do you shoot in?

Hi Ed, thanks for getting back to me, I just changed yesterday my setting to 30 fps. I will try it out tomorrow. as well when I move my drone from r. to left or vis versa I get a lot of chopping in my video play back on my computer. Not sure how to change that have a great day and thanks for your thoughts Jean-Jacques

Can the camera on the mavic zoom in? (My chroma 4K doesn't have that option)
@EdRickerVlogs

It can't zoom in optically, but it has a digital zoom for certain resolutions...not really worth using since digital zoom would be the same as scaling in editing.

Ed Ricker Vlogs see as a video maker I'd love to be able to, for the extra amount of detail I'd be able to pick up. However, as a civilian the thought terrifies me. Someone sitting quietly at 200ft reading my license plate while I drive by would freak me out.lol Think they'll ever take it there?

Well for extreme optical drone zoom, I wonder if that's something that will be regulated by the government because of the ability to spy from the sky. Of course the governments of the world can already do that with satellites and government drones all they want, but the average joe probably shouldn't be entrusted with that power without some sort of certification or whatever. People have known how to maintain privacy across all directions of a compass forever, and it's understood by law that if it can be seen from the sidewalk, street, public place, etc, it's fair game for photography or videography...but the ability for the average person to view from above is such a new concern that I'd imagine there will be a niche market for dedicated drone-blasters that people can buy to shoot/disable them right out of the sky if they're over houses. Hmmm, did I just invent something? As for 4K is the most hyped resolution these days, but there are pro cameras that shoot 5k, 6k, 8k, etc. As those greater resolutions come into the prosumer realm in the next 10 years, perhaps a digital zoom would produce the clarity of an optical zoom to a certain extent. Interesting ideas!
