I know the story of why the PL-100 smells like cured bacon. It began in 1985 with a man named Pierre Labouchère who wanted a distinctive Canadian flair to his penetrating oil formulation. He instructed his scientists to add the extract of virgin sap from 100 year old blue maple trees, which is a rare and relatively unknown species, only found in the most remote regions of Nunavut. The acidic nature of this extract makes it unsuitable for syrup production but is ideal for breaking down hydrated iron oxides and curing meats, particularly pork, hence your association of its smell with bacon. Because the addition of this versatile extract was so revolutionary in the industry, the marketing folks decided to commemorate Pierre's contributions by naming the product PL-100 and providing it in a blue can. Fascinating history. 🍻

This has been my 5-year-old daughter's absolute favorite video for the past few months. "Can we watch the silly guy again? I want the smelling video," she says. She cracks up, and I mean like hunched-over belly laughs, every time you combine the three oils at the end and exclaim, "Augh! I've done it!" I told her I thought it was great that out of all the videos on the internet, she chose this one as her favorite, and that she loves watching restoration videos so much. She asked, "Why? Why is restoration so important? Because it teaches us not to inhale dangerous chemicals like this?" (Her vocabulary, as you might be able to tell, is more advanced than your average 5-year-old.) I took the opportunity to explain a few reasons that it's good not to just toss something when it breaks and get a new one, and it created yet another teaching and bonding opportunity. We just started watching it, and when you asked, "Is smelling inhaling?" she responded, "Yes," at the same time you said it. Man, it makes me laugh and swell with pride.
