Used a Bantam 10xsg since 1988. After watching Capt. Jeff, I caught the fever and now own 7- Bantam 50sg and 3 - 50's and matched them with 7' Intercoastal Ugly Sticks. No problems with parts, since many cross over from other Shimano reels. Some call my obsession over this reel as hoarding. I call it investing in my fishing future. You are correct sir, it is a lot more fun to catch a big fish on lighter line. Your reel skills come into play at that point if you have any, I have one surf pole with 40 pound line, just for catching shark or very large fish, honestly I don't use it that often. It seemed like a good idea at the time lol, no reelgretts though, damn puns haha

I just picked up a bahtam 10sg Mag off an online garage sale. I went through it cleaned it up and thats all it needed. Hands down the easiest to cast bait caster I have ever owned. I have caught several big fish on it already this year. I mainly target big catfish, and this reel will cast even a light liver rig with 8lb dia. braid (20lb) line and 1/4 oz egg slip sinker around 30 yards in the wind without the slightest backlash. I feel like you and it seems they just don't build them as good as they once did. I am also trying to by as many up as I can.

Loved the old wood handle Calcutta 400 and 700. (Especially the 700 since it had a casting button rather than a lever.) I loved the wood handled stradic/sustains as well. IMO that was the last of the good Shimano's. With that said, for smaller baitcasters, I DO like the castability of the calcutta DC's. The fact that you can cast a whole spool of 30lb braid off of them in a single cast (as long as you DO NOT thumb the spool.lol.. a habit easier to break in theory than you might hink.) has its qualities, and it has held up for years for me when I was fishing. But... it is a $500 reel. As far as corrosion, I never have issues, even when dunking, or not rinsing due to a spray on product I bought a case of a few years ago called 386 nano reel seal. It waterproofs your reels. ($20 for a can that does bout 6 calcutta 400 sized reels inside and out. So its not cheap... but worth every penny... if you can find it.) I did like the bantams, but I needed heavier lures to get the spool turning well on the ones I bought in my younger days for castability. Other good reels to mention over the years in the baitcaster category... Quantum Iron series made about 15 years ago. The only quantum I ever owned for more than a few months, but like the bantam, it needed a good amount of weight to cast it to any decent degree. Recent years, daiwa has impressed me. (The Luna is crap..its a cheap calcutta wannabe) The low profile reel they made amazingly well for the money was their coastal inshore. It wasnt fancy in any way, but it was smooth and tough. (Like Daiwa BG tough lol.) and it was inexpensive in comparison to most reels now days at around $130 when I bought mine. As far as spinning reels over the last decade.... The Daiwa TDA-A series is an awesome spinning reel... absolutely awesome. Its a great reel and is very tough, as well as virtually casting knot proof with braid. I used it for everything from trout to tarpon for 5 years, none of the ones I bought had a single issue. I sold prob 500 from the shop in a few years and only had 3 come back with any issues. (2 were dunked and unrinsed btw so that was user error.) This is just my two cents on the reels I have liked. I assure you the reels I hate are a much bigger list!!!! Jeff have you ever tried any of the reels I mentioned?

With the drag washers, for any of the old reels like older senators or bantams that have WAAY OVERPRICED drag washer prices, i call up or email the "smoooth drag" carbontex company and for 20 bucks they will send you a sheet of their carbontex drag stuff... usually will make me washers for atleast 5 reels, all you gotta do is trace the old drag washers and cut the new ones out. Order i think 0.5 mm for most reels, its either 0.5 or 0.05 but one of those

I have some of those calcutta 400s and they are overrated. Yeah they catch fish and I’d prefer them over this newer crap but they require more work to keep running smoothly. However, shimano triton and similar models are good fairly cheap reels that will last a long time and catch literally many many tons worth of tarpon with minimal very basic upkeep that anyone with a set of tools can do. I fish em from land too so the reel’s drag system is going to take more abuse with no boat to close down the gap between me and a running angry fish. Some people complain about the material of the drag washers but as long as they’re looked after and kept clean I’ve not had any problems. Very simple reels not a whole lot of parts. I first learned to do self-maintenance with tritons, only thing I don’t like is the amount of screws that you need to deal with while opening the reel. To me the tritons and similar graphite conventional models those are my bantams.
